Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

Ok i got it and tried it twice. It doesn't ask to update. And when i select recovery it just goes to a update icon then the triangle ! Comes up.

Well, you can install amon ra whenever. You just put the PC36IMG.zip file on the root (top level) of your sd card and boot with vol down and power.

Hmm.. It sounds like the file isn't signed, but that file should be signed. Try either A) download file again and try again, or B) look for an option to turn off verify/signed/authorized something...not sure the exact title in clockwork.

Ok, I think I got it. I rebooted the phone and put RA 2.3 in the root directory. Restarted the phone and it asked me if I want to apply update. I said yes and I saw that RA 2.3 was running.

It then allowed me to run superuser.zip.

Oceanbreeze, the guide isn't exactly clear that you must run RA 2.3 before running the superuser.zip file. Is that not the correct order?

Yes I have s off. I'm trying to put superuser on the system. But I can't use recovery without it? It makes no sense. And what do you mean? I downloaded the clockwork zip that was posted here. I thought thats what you guys meant. If not can I get a link?

Ok, I'm at the part where I'm making a nandroid backup. The default items that are checked are "boot", "system", and "data". Do I need to click anything else?

"Cache", "recovery", "wimax", "sd-ext", and ".android_secure" are all unchecked by default.

Okay, so if you have S-Off, and a custom recovery? SU allows you to run apps as root. The PC36IMG.zip file is the custom recovery (which is needed if you want to be able to flash that file).

If you need the recovery, try here and go with Amon Ra.

I think the confusion is that (now, I might be wrong here...) the su file doesn't need to be anywhere specific. I think root just makes the guide easier to follow. Because of it's name, it is not going to be applied the same way a recovery would (PC36IMG.zip).

Wimax. You don't need it every time, but it helps to always have a back up or two of your wimax keys.

I am very thankful for the guide, the steps are very easy to follow and mine worked the first time. Last night I read every single page up to page 9 before feeling comfortable with it, but no problems with my root!!!!

However, I do have a question about ROM. I trust the advice on here based on the excellent work and dilligence so far. I know this thread is dedicated to rooting but where can I find the best ROM's? Can I use ROM's that came out before 2.3.3 root?

I downloaded the ra 2.3 file from the list and put it on root. I entered hboot and it didnt ask if i wanted to update. So I selected recovery and it did the same thing. I just want to put super user on so I can get root :/

Cool, glad it worked for you. And you can flash any evo 4g rom you want. You could flash stock froyo if you want (by why?).
Ocn did a really good job with this.

For roms, just check out around here. Usually threads about a rom will include something like [ROM] in the title.

Did you name the amon ra file *exactly* PC36IMG.zip? In some windows (depending on settings) you might have file extensions hidden. If so, you could possible be naming the file PC36IMG.zip.zip Which wouldn't work.

I suppose you could try running the Revolutionary again. If you have S-Off, you should be set to install any recovery you want.

I have super user running no problem but when I go to flash a rom I keep getting something saying switch to edify script? Anyone know what I did wrong? I cleared everything and the only thing I can find online about it is way too advanced for me.

does anyone have a link to the MIK ROMS? The Mik site is down..can anyon help
Some of the mik roms require accounts to their site to download, so if sites down than that's that.

But check the ROMs and Kernels thread. It might have some direct downloads to Mik Roms. If not, there are a lot of great roms to try.

You're not using Rom Manager are you? It's best to do these things in recovery.

Also, what recovery are you using. You might want to try Amon Ra.

^ Just copy and paste, put your phone into USB mode and find a nice folder.

But you can do that after you flash your rom. Just don't wipe SD.

I tried both a rom manager and doing it from recovery and I am using amon ra. Also tried clockworkmod. None of that has worked.

Okay, but can you get into recovery? Amon ra has worked for you?
And you're after the Su file right?
If so, re-download it. Might have been a bad file.

ok, i just wiped cache, data, davic and ran superwipe.

installing ROM now..after I can grab the wimax keys?

Here's the thing: Unless something goes very wrong, you still will have your wimax keys. Making a nandroid of them just makes it so if you somehow lose them, you can restore them. Pretty snazzy right?

Ok I did it and updated the pc36img but now what do i do to get superuser on my phone? Clockwork still won't work so I still can't do it that way.
