Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

Hey guys fist time posting here. When I connect to the Rev tool I get an error saying device not supported. My Hboot is 2,16.0001, 2.3.3 and S-ON. I have never rooted before and I thought this will bypass the new security. I installed drivers and dont see HTC sync anywhere in my programs. I have checked USB debugging and am in charge only. Am I missing something?? Please any help guys I would appreciate.
 
did the drivers install properly? try uninstalling and reinstalling revolutionary that might help... =/

Anyone in the Martinsburg, WV area. Would like my evo rooted, but I'm a dumba** to all of this, would like someone that knows what their doing to do it for me.

Please take your time are read a little. You should learn how to do this on your own. With root comes a lot of responsibility with your phone, the more you know the better off you will be.
Try to follow the guide step by step, and if you get stuck, let us know where you are and we'll get you through. :)
 
Sometimes the best fix is just a reboot.
It seems that is the only answer the digital services folks at my company know. :D
 
Ok here's my problem, bear with me. I don't have internet on my computer so i downloaded everything on my phone and moved it to my computer. Everything worked till i got to the part that asks if youd like to flash clockwork recovery. Ofcourse I said no since I have no internet. Then it said I had s off but i rebooted my phone and clockwork doesn't work. So now I don't know hpw to put the superuser file ontp the system. Any advice?

Try to rerun revolutionary, and select yes for clockwork install. Post back if it works.

I tried that, it tells me I do have s off already. But I can't get clockwork without internet access. I've tried downloading it from the market but I can't use it because it says im not rooted.
 
Just once again wanted to say THANK YOU!!! Easy process and this was the first time I've been rooted. Very easy to do just gotta read. Thanks so much again!!!!!!!

Good idea, but you need to flash superuser first before you can run root apps. Hmmm, quite the conundrum. We could try to get recovery using a PC36IMG flash. I'm on my phone or I would link you to the file you can use. Crap!
Give me a few minutes, I'll try to see if i can figure something out.
 
To Granite 1, Thanks for the vote of confidence, I will give it a shot( just afraid of bricking my phone). Should I use unrevoked or revolutionary or what do you suggest

How far along are you?

If you already have s-off, then you can use the usb mode to get the files you need on there... (the su file for example)
