Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

hmm so when you start hboot it doesnt say to update.. do you see it when you go to recovery flash zip from sdcard?
 
OK so I renamed the file back to PC36IMG.zip and it updated properly! That part of the guide wasn't clear for me. I thought I was just supposed to rename the file to PC36IMG not PC36IMG.zip!

Hey guys. I've rooted once in the past and managed without too much trouble. I read the OP's guide in its entirety and I think I get it, but when I get to the Revolutionary page (after downloading the file) there is no option for the 4G. I checked each to see if there were any that worked with 2.16, but didn't see any. Am I missing something? :-S

Have you tried to right click and copy, then paste to notepad. Then copy from notepad to revolution?
Also try to get another key. Don't know if you can, but its worth a try.

Are you sure you're using the right version?
The EVO 4G supersonic 2.16 hboot is in the latest version.

Ah, hey, thanks a lot. I was working off a version of the website I pulled this afternoon. I refreshed and it's pulling several more phones including the 4G. Thanks. :-)

My Evo 4g has S-off but but I couldn't run the steps 8,9,10,11,12 and 13....two questions:

1. Do I need to download and flash ClockworkMod Recovery?
2. How do I run the steps 8,9,10,11,12 and 13?

i did the volume down deal and my evo is hboot 2.160001, ive tried to get several new keys ive copy pasted them ive typed them, ive deleted everything and started over fresh, my evo is a assurion replacement phone would that matter? cant get revolutionary to validate the beta key.

1.try running revolution again. when it asks you to update and install clockwork mod select yes. if not we can get you a recovery. there is a section on how to switch recoveries in the guide. you can use that to switch.
2.you need recovery to flash the su file.

you know a bunch pf folks are getting this. not sure what the wotk around for it is at the moment. keep trying though.

Yes you need to flash a recovery, and get the superuser app, etc.
Read through the steps a few times, and make sure you have all of the files on the root of your SD card, not in any folders.
Once you have everything downloaded and read post back which step you are stuck on, and we'll get you going from there. :)

Edit: Follow what Ocn says, and retry revolution.
 
I know you can't take a nand from one phone and use it on another but can I take my app backup from one Evo made on TB and use it on another Evo?

On a side note Ocean, do you work? You are all over here. Oh and what happened to Matlock?
 
Hi Guys!

I seem to have followed all the steps, and I have S-Off, but ClockworkMod Recovery failed to download. I cannot get into recovery, I keep getting the red exclamation mark. I have pulled the battery, reset the phone, rerun Revolutionary which keeps telling me I already have S-Off, and offers to install CWM, which fails again. I'm not sure what to do at this point, and would appreciate it if someone could help. Thanks in advance!

yes i work!!!!!!! doing some of it now. well sort of.:D

i am not sure on that. i imagine it should work. do not see why. never tried.

i think matlock moved on. i forget which phone he has. put i saw him on other forums though.
 
I'll be trying it tonight then. I'll report back. I'm still on the one I got on eBay but should be able to move everything over tonight.
 
Hi Friends:

Just want to thank you all your support...my Evo 4g has S-off and I could run all steps (1 to 13)...I'm on rooting side...it's my first time...all I want to do for now is erase the original apps that I don't need from 2.3.3

Can I run Titanium Backup to backup and erase those apps?
