Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

what would be the best battery saving kernal you think and do i install it the same way i did the roms?

Kernel depends entirely on your phone. I would install Mikg and run it for a few days to get a baseline. Then download either of the 2.3 kernels, wipe cache and dalvik-cache and flash the kernel. Run it for a few days and see if the results are good or bad. You will only know for sure by trying them out. Freedom kernels don't play well with my phone but others have great luck with them. Just remember to ALWAYS make a nandroid backup before making any changes so you can return to a good working point if something goes wrong.

Hello, noob here, been lurking for awhile looking to root my EVO 4 G GB.

Excellent guide mostly worked perfect me except for this part when switching recoveries.

"5.hboot should see the file and select yes to update."

it doesn't ask me to update, how can I check to see which recovery I'm running?

Thanks for a great forum!

Make sure it is named EXACTLY PC36IMG. Do not add a .zip on the end as windows by default hides extensions and it will be named .zip.zip and hboot won't flash it.

You can try and go to recovery from hboot. If you have one, let us know which it is. If you get a triangle and exclamation point then you need to pull the battery and get one flashed from hboot.

did you change the file name? and to see which recovery go to the recovery option and it should say which one you are currently running .

It is exactly PC36IMG!

I'm in recovery, Revolutionary CWM v4.0.1.4

Still not sure what recovery I'm running?

You should install MikG first then the kernel otherwise the kernel included with MikG will overwrite the one you flashed previously.

did you put the file on the root (not in any folders) of the card.

I see that Revolutionary is also available for those of us running Linux, can this process be completed completely from a linux machine or do you need windows in order to get the HTC Drivers and such?

not sure on the linux and the drivers. that is a good question. i'm not sure on that one. will need to do some research.

Thank you so much for your in-depth explanation of the rooting process! Lol, I got stuck towards the end of the process because I forgot to flash the superuser application on my SD drive. Luckily, I messed around with my phone for a little bit while it was in recovery and I finally figured out how to do it.

try starting over and download the file again.

edit: i could be a bad download. try again.

Same thing, it doesn't ask me to update, and I'm still on clockwork in recovery.

after i am rooted and have a rom installed do i need to keep the zip files on my sd card or can i erase all the zip files i put on there ?

im still new but i doubt you do after you install the rom you can back it up and restore if you need to. the .zip was just so that it can be flashed on your phone.

nein is correct. once you are done flashing it is not necessay that you keep the zip file. however i always keep at least one on my card. just in case soemthing happens and i need a rom quick.
