Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

Hi Friends:

Just want to thank you all your support...my Evo 4g has S-off and I could run all steps (1 to 13)...I'm on rooting side...it's my first time...all I want to do for now is erase the original apps that I don't need from 2.3.3

Can I run Titanium Backup to backup and erase those apps?

Thanks again,

TecMan

just be careful on what you delete. check out the op. i added a bloatware section. it has a link with a list of apps that is safe. check it out. also i would use tb to just freeze things.

that guide just keeps getting bigger =P last night it was just how to root. Now you have all these links and guides added. =]

I ran revolutionary.exe and made it through the following.

Zerging Root... this might take a minute or so.. Root acquired!
Sending in Caroline...
Cleaning up...
Rebooting to fastboot...
When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade. Make life take the lemons back!

Waiting for fastboot...

When I get to HBOOT, it always reads S-ON. I've tried running it about 5 times and I never see S-OFF. Anyone else having this problem? I'm on HBOOT 2.16.0001.

Hi Guys!

I seem to have followed all the steps, and I have S-Off, but ClockworkMod Recovery failed to download. I cannot get into recovery, I keep getting the red exclamation mark. I have pulled the battery, reset the phone, rerun Revolutionary which keeps telling me I already have S-Off, and offers to install CWM, which fails again. I'm not sure what to do at this point, and would appreciate it if someone could help. Thanks in advance!

This happened to me a few minutes ago, but I got around it.

I put the Amon RA PC36IMG file on my SD card and turned the phone on using the Vol-down&Power method (not sure what this is called, my first time rooting). Once the screen of options came up, the phone had discovered the Amon Recovery file and asked if I wanted to install it. I said yes, followed the instructions, rebooted using the same Vol-down&Power method, and selected Recovery from the list of options (after telling it I didn't want to install the PC36IMG again, I forgot to delete it!).

Once in Recovery, I used the install file from zip option to add the superuser file that was already on the SDcard from the first few steps.

Hope this helps a bit.

Richard

I am not sure that this is the correct forum to post this question but I wanted to know which ROM and/or kernel combination would you personally recommend to increase battery life and speed?

hmm im new to this as well so i don't know that but there should be a thread for that. if not then just look around.

I tried that, and it worked flawlessly. I am now rooted! Thanks a bunch!

Well, if you want sense, check out mik's work.

And I always have liked myn's warm 2.2 (froyo) with the netarchy kernel.

I'm using CM7 with tiamat right now though. They are all good.

Sorry about the diversion...

So I switched my recovery to amon ra... I see that I have the nandroid on my root... how do I get rid of clockwork mod? Or do I not? Slightly confused.... I'm so new to the world of root!!!

hmm i switched to Amon Ra and i didnt get rid of Clockwork mod. i dont think it makes a difference since you installed that. It probally gets rid of it, im not sure though=/ sorry i couldnt be more help .

First of all this website rocks and everyone is always so helpful and knowledgeable! I've been patiently waiting for an exploit to be found, and finally there is one! I think to myself, Hell YES!! I couldn't wait to finally root my phone, but alas I ran into a problem! I'm a complete newb to rooting so I know I must be missing the basics. I was really hoping Oceanbreeze's guide would help me get started, but I ran into a problem right away LOL! I don't know how to put the "superuser" zip file into the root folder. I can't find it anywhere when I plug my phone into my computer. I downloaded the drivers from the Revolutionary website as well. Do I make up a "root folder" into the sdcard? I'm also not completely sure if this is the correct thread to post this in, so I apologize ahead of time for disrupting any kind of flow.

You only have one recovery. Amon-ra is one version of recovery. Clockwork is another. If you flash amon-ra you no longer have clockwork. :)
