Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

also i remember earlier that Revolutionary wouldnt work because they had Pdanet on and running. If you have anything like that just try and exit and then try. and if you have the option to run as Administrator then try that it might help.

I have tried everything to to get a valid Beta key from my SN but I always get Invalid beta key.
Does anyone have any other way to get this to work?

Do you think it's coincidence that my wife's Evo 4G was offered an OTA update this morning? :) It probably is mere coincidence. But I laughed knowingly as I refused the update. I will be rooting my Evo tomorrow for the first time (probably shouldn't take the time to do it while on vacation with the family). But I'm one of those that updated to GB, then later decided to try rooting, then learned I couldn't. Last thing I did before I went to bed last night was check Ocean Breeze's post and saw that S-off is now available.

Anyway, I thought it was funny that she was offered an update this morning. I'll be back tomorrow to follow this guide and see if I can't have an even better Evo experience than stock!

still doesn't work, even copying the beta key from Revolutionary and pasting it into the DOS window, keep getting 'invalid key'...

Im still getting the red triangle. I have S-off and installed the HTC drive. I also restarted my computer. When I go to recovery I get a red triangle

re-run Revolutionary it will say you have s-off. it then asks if you want clockwork mod recovery type y then hit enter and it installs it

I fnally figured out what i was doing wrong, I have S-OFF and installed clockwork Mod, flashed SuperUser, and I am now trying to do a nandroid backup. this is what it says:
"No sd-ext found. Skipping backup of sd-ext. Generating md5 sum." After that, it said that backup was complete. What does that No sx-ext stuff mean?

do not worry about that that is normal. it is just checking of you have your card partitioned. if you do not then it moves on. parttioning your card is a way to help internal memory on your phone. you can moves apps to the card rather then your phone to save space. some roms support this and moves your apps automatically. the roms that do not, you will have to run a script called darltremors through terminal emulator to command ot to move the apps.

Sorry to repeat a question (#43), but does Revolutionary method work on MACs? (Unrevoked did.) If not, will a MAC 'approach' be coming along?

Thanks in advance.

linux and wnidows are the only one being supprted as of right now. not sure on an eta. they did say that this is supposed to be a dev tool at the moment as it is a little difficult to do. they will be updating this, just do not know when or what the update will be. do you know of someone with a pc?

ocnbrze - Thanks for all the work you are putting in on this.

Two quick questions:

1. Roughly how much disk space does backup take when making the nandroid backup (steps 11/12 in "Rooting Gingerbread" guide)?

2. Does backup go to phone or SD card? I assume it goes to SD card but not sure.

Hi all, New to the forums been reading and waiting for root since gb update!

Anyways my question is, do I need to do anything not on the list before running revolutionary? If not, how long should I wait for revolutionary to "wait for device"? I downloaded and installed the drivers and the su.... file is in the root folder of my sd card

1.it depends on the rom you are backing up any where from 100-500 mb of space can be used on nandroids. remember that inlcudes apps and data so it will be big.
2.yep it goes onto your card. in clockwork mod i believe it has its own folder. if you use amon ra it goes into a nandroid folder.

one person mentioned pda net running on the computer that should be uninstalled, but i think if you have anti virus and htc sync turned off or uninstalled you should be good to go.

If I plan to use AMON RA as recovery, I assume I can select "No" when revolutionary asks me if I want to install ClockworkMod? Then after S-OFF is accomplished, I install AMON RA by going into recovery and flashing PC36IMG.zip?

This is great to see on a Monday!!

Ok, so basically I follow all the instructions in the OP.

I then download titanium backup and run a backup.

I then download Amon-RA and run it.

I then install a battery saving kernel like the one listed in the OP

I then install MikG, which is considered the best Sense 3.0 ROM out currently?

Is this correct?

Not sure yet about revolutionary but with unrevoked there were times where you had to do a factory reset to get it to start. For some reason there was data or apps that could cause it to not start up. Might be something to try here if you have not already. This will cause you to lose all your data though so use my backup pro or something similar to backup your user data if you want it saved.

Sigh... Some shut-eye has helped to calm the rage of failure... so I'm backing up all of my data as we speak to perform the factory reset. If this doesn't work, then I'll know that it's some program I have on my comp. Do you think everything will run properly on an external hard drive? I know I'll have to install the drivers, but that's also easy to undo...

EDIT: And I just reset my phone for nothing... I'm still stuck at the same point. So, it's not my phone. Cool. It's my computer, and I have no clue what might be causing it. I have no kind of protection on my computer, so I don't know. I'm kinda going on an uninstall rampage, and if that doesn't work, I will try to acquire a different computer....

Yes, but you didn't word it exactly. Put the PC36IMG.zip file in the root of your SD card. When you hold vol down + power, you'll be in Hboot and it will find your file. Select "yes" and let it do its thing.

sounds like a good plan. only mikg is sense 2.1/3.0 combo. if you want pure sense3.0 then mik3d is for you.
