Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

Woohoo! I'm rooted and ran a backup! I know some of you are having trouble so I'm not trying to rub this in but that was way easier than I expected. Last time I tried to hack a device was with the original iPod touch with the 112 steps to jailbreak. Now that was a pain! Thank you unrevoked and AlphaRev!!! You guys rock!

yeah i'm not sure what else to tell you. i have not run this yet. at some point i will unroot and try this.

I have been. I dropped $190 on eBay for a used one 4 weeks ago. This is for my replacement I got 4 weeks before that. Brand new from sprint.

yeah i believe so... i got the key but now the window won't let me input it...not sure whats going on...

Are you sure you don't have antivirus software? This is the same issue I had and it just sat on the dos screen. ONce I disabled the AV software, it was fine.

wow interesting. do not know that version. interesting. thanx need to do some research on that one.

I looked around and asked over at the IRC chat. They mentioned a few versions (4.0.1.4, 4.0.0.8, 4.0.1.9) and said it mattered on the device, when I said HTC Evo, they confirmed the 4.0.1.4.

I am looking a little bit more to see if I can confirm any more.

Hello there!

First post here, have been following the 2.3.3 threads daily for a while now. Very excited about the big news!

Quick (noob) question, I'm running GB 2.3.3, Baseband version 2.15.00.05.02 and I believe there's one update available that I haven't done yet. Do I need to run the HTC update before using the revolutionary tool to root the phone?

Thanks for spreading the word and for all the help!

nope you are good for root right now. never take any update especially if you want to root and definitely when you are rooted. go for it!!!!!!!!!!!! any questions please feel free to ask.

I'm one of the many who have come out of the woodworks once the announcement was made. Currently I've gotten to where it shows S-OFF. It asked if I wanted to "run and flash CWM recovery". Typed y and hit enter. It said "Downloading recovery for your phone (supersonic)...Done.
Rebooting to fastboot...
Flashing recovery over fastboot...
How long is this "flashing over fastboot" supposed to take? It's going at least 10-20 minutes now.

Hello all!!! New lurker here... and I, along with many, am having issues with this process. I keep getting stuck at the "Zerging Root" step, and it's making me lose my mind... so, here is all that I have tried to remedy my issue:
-Discovered that my phone must be on (not bootloader screen), with USB debugging and charge only
-Realized that the only way to get Revolutionary to recognize my phone after an attempt is to unplug the usb cord and replug it
-Discovered that Revolutionary will immediately abort when HTC Sync is installed... so I uninstalled it
- Installed, uninstalled, then reinstalled the fastboot drivers that are in the OP
- Reset my computer, reset my device... multiple times
- Dowloaded, deleted, and redownloaded revolutionary, the su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip several times
- Turned off avast! Antivirus
- Both typed AND copy-pasted my beta key (although I never had an issue with it)

After doing all this, I went and searched videos of how long I should be stuck at the "Zerging Root" step, and it seems that if it is going to be successful, it happens pretty darn quick. Like, seconds quick. However, I've let it sit for minutes each time and I am getting nowhere. I've read every post on this thread, and it also seems like people who get stuck at that step haven't really found anything... at least that no one has posted. So, if anyone has any advice or ideas, please let me know. For the meantime, I'm going to do a full rinse-repeat on this fool, then try to get some shut-eye... maybe sleep will make my problems go away?? I don't really think so....

give it a few more minutes. if nothing happens, i would pull the battery out and press and hold power+vol down. can you get into recovery from hboot?

When I try recovery from the hboot menu, it shows the htc evo 4g logo, then goes to a black screen with a phone and green arrows in a circle (like a sync logo), then goes to the phone with the red triangle and red exclamation point. I have done this multiple times with the same results.

ok pull the battery or power off. boot up. re-run revolutionary again. should give you a recovery.

I've tried that before, with no success. It tells me I already have S-OFF, what am I doing, do I want to flash CWM recovery. I appreciate the help by the way.

ok yeah you can do that. though i would not recomend that you use clockwork mod. i use amon ra. it is a much better recovery. i just put instructions on how to switch recoveries in the op. try that.

I will. I was going to ask if that was an option at this point.
