Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

now that I am rooted, is there a thread that has apps/stuff to install like how to increase battery life and the internet teethering?

Hello, everybody. Obviously, I am new. I've followed this message board since the beginning of the summer. Now, I am rooted. I'm pretty excited. I just want to say thank you. I hope you guys enjoy the rest of your summer.

I backed up twice and read the Rooting for dummies guide 10 times through to make sure I didn't mess things up. One thing that I was worried about was making sure to backup the WiMax keys so I don't ever perm lose 4g. I noticed however this backup did not leave me with a WiMax.img. Am I missing something?

Sorry if this is the wrong area, but it kinda does pertain to the steps posted by OP.
Hmm... I'm guessing you're on clockwork recovery?

I think I flashed the Amon Ra file right away, so I don't know the workings of clockwork too well, but Amon Ra gives you a folder with all the .img files in it.

(boot, cache, system, recovery, data, wimax, were all in my stock 2.2 nandroid).

I think I'd try it again. Also there is a wimax key checker app that will check for you keys.

And in the rooting for dummies, they give you some linux commands to run to check for the keys (something like ls /dev/ ... | grep "" if I recall correctly).

I'd try the backup again. Don't wanna lose those keys.

The app you suggested does say "Congradulations! your HTC EVO RSA key is present!".

This makes sense because this is the first time this phone has ever been rooted, and I use 4g daily.

Edit: I'm currently in windows but I can easily reboot into linux if someone needs some information from me that only linux can gather.

files in both backups performed are.
.android_secure.img
boot.img
cache.img
data.img
nandroid.md5
recover.img
system.img

well then you are good to go with wimax keys. keep a nandroid backup with your keys on your computer in a safe place just in case you loose them.

Yup, check the rooting for dummies guide. It has apps galore. Also, check out SetCPU. With it you can over and under clock your cpu depending on your kernel.

i hope you are not leaving. keep us posted on how your phone is doing. i would highly suggest that you try and flash some roms. we have sense 3.0 roms even a port from the evo3d. it is like you just upgraded your phone to the 3d without having to really or pay for it. also we have sense 2.1 and sense 3.0 combo roms as well. i would start with mikg2.45 myself.

While this makes me confident that I am safe currently. My concern is the lack of a wimax.img file in the backup. Is clockwork now storing this information in a different .img file? I wanna try out some of those sense 3.0 mods but before I do anything I'm making 101% sure my wimax is backed up.

i'm not sure with clockwork mod i switched to amon ra 2.3 so im not sure how the nandroid backups wimax. i just know that it does. if you want to play it safe i would make a switch to amon ra2.3. go here http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/259446-clockwork-amon-ra-pc36img-files.html. if you have questions or issues lets create a new thread and we can go from there.

Well, with S-Off you can now get the SU in there. That's where the money's at! Boot up and see if it works, that's the best way to check. Get the Terminal Emulator app and type "su" into the prompt. If your prompt changes, then you have it.

ok typo with the 6.16 hboot. lol

thats what it said

i downloaded the app and typed in "su" and it brought up a superuser request page and when i select allow it says the app has superuser permissions.

do i take that as im rooted....?!

Ok, so it is backing up my system now.

Some notes, first of all, thank you all so much for all your hard work to make this possible!

Next, I was confused about making sure HTC Synch was not installed, I uninstalled the HTC Driver installer a few times before I figured it out.

I didn't know what to have my usb connection in, charge only is what finally worked.

I needed to restart my computer after unzipping Revolutionary.

It took a while to recognize my device, be patient.

Some folk might not know about the edit functions in the dos window, only way to copy Serial number to enter on to website to get beta key and copy back.

I had trouble because I didn't know how to navigate the bootloader, with the volume key and pressing power button to select.

I got the red triangle thing but when I went to re run Revolutionary, it said I was already S off, so I downloaded the Clockwork Bootloader.

Might tell folk when they are supposed to pull the usb cable from the phone, seems to have caused some of my problems.

That is enough for tonight, I will play with this bad boy tomorrow.

Thanks again to all concerned! :)

Also, add in to turn off antivirus programs on your PC. It kept blocking the dos window that pops up to enter the beta key.

Okay, then you're rooted. You can run root only apps. Do advanced command line stuff, and flash new roms.

Ocn was talking about the hboot version. It's actually 2.16, not 6.16

No, I don't think I'm gonna leave. I'll be a fool if I do. I've enjoyed surfing this message board lately. I'll check out those roms. Thanks for the heads up. I upgraded my Evo to Gingerbread without thinking. Ah, it's not a big deal. There's always a solution in any problem. Anyway, my friend rooted his HTC Evo Froyo last year. He flashed Fresh Evo rom. He loves it. He suggested me to flash it. I'd appreciate your opinion.

I've heard good things about Fresh. I'd recommend just flashing a bunch to start with (and using Titanium Backup [free or pay] and SMS Backup).

There are a lot to try. You can stick with Froyo Sense, GB Sense, And AOSP for both froyo and GB.
