ok so lets try soemthing wipe data, system, dalvik cache and cache. wipe them three times and reboot.

if it is still doing it then go back into recovery select usb ms toggle. download this rom:Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites! rom. it is mikg2.45 move the file over to the card and then follow directions in the guide in the flashing section

Uh oh, I think something may be wrong. I wiped those things, 3 times each, rebooted and now it's been on the htc evo 4g white startup screen for several minutes now.

Do I dare interrupt it to try to get into recovery?

edit: MikG* is done downloading. What do I do?

ok the white screen(splash screen) is a better sign then boot looping like that. just give it like 10-15minutes for it to boot up. just be patient. it should boot up.

Well that's great. Already Interrupted it. Sigh. Was in recovery when I saw this last post. Rebooted.

Do you use irc or chat of any sort? That would save a lot of mistakes on my part. A forum like this could really benefit from a chatroom :-/

Ok so here is what happened to me and I'll tell you how to fix it.

On the guide, there are two optional items. I skipped both of them because I didn't want to have to reinstall my apps and etc. I think that's why this happened.

Basically, i followed the guide and everything worked flawlessly, but upon final reboot, it would just reboot over and over. A white htc evo 4g splash screen would appear followed by the sprint 4g little intro movie thing, after which, bam, restart.

Here is how to fix it.
Boot into recovery.

If you are using clockworkmod, toss it out the window for amon ra. How to do it is in the guide for this root under "Switching recoveries".

Once you have amon ra installed, you need zzsuperwipe: MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service
MikG rom (you can use whatever you want, but I really like this one and the dev for it is pretty win): Download Links

First, you may want to backup any photos and stuff you have on your sd card, and in fact, I recommend partitioning your sd card (I did and it was very worth it), instructions here (Anytime "Synergy ROM" is mentioned, think "MikG"): [GUIDE][07/07/11]How to Partition your SD Card - xda-developers

If you just partitioned your sd card and followed those instructions, you're done and all should be flowers and daffodils.

If not, keep reading...

TL;DR version
First, put the zzsuperwipe zip file and the MikG zip file on your sd card in the root directory. Root means root of the file system. If you still don't understand... Think of directories as a giant tree. The tree starts at the trunk or root (In other words one place). For example, on your computer, if you go into my computer, c:, you are looking at the root of your hard drive. This isn't a complicated concept, but many people overthink it, so if you are, stop.

Long and crappily written version:
If you cannot see the extensions on the filenames (extensions are .exe, .doc, .zip, etc), open up windows explorer > organize >folder and search options > "View" tab > Uncheck "Hide Extensions for known filetypes".

In MicroShaft Winbloze, Microsoft assumes that you are a drooling idiot and cannot differentiate between a music file and a work document.

Ok, once we have done all of this, we need to put our phone into recovery, Pop out the battery (leave the usb cable plugged in), press and hold the power and volume down buttons and pop the battery back in and snap the battery backing on. Use volume up/down to go up and down in the menu, power to select.

Select recovery

Phone will appear to reboot then go into Amon Ra (Recovery)

Flash Zip File from sdcard

Choose ZZSuperWipe from your sd card

Much Armageddon will happen on your phone's files

When it is finished you now need to flash MikG. Now... I can't remember if zzsuperwipe kills all the files on your sd card. If it doesn't, then choose "Flash zip file from sdcard" and flash the MikG file.

If it does kill the MikG file, from the main Amon Ra menu select USB:ms, and copy the file over from your computer to the root folder of your sdcard, then press the power button on your phone to turn off USB:ms. From the main menu, select "Flash zip file from sdcard" and choose the MikG file.

Wait for it to finish, then once it says it is all done, choose "Reboot Device".

Wait for a long time (up to 10 - 20 minutes?).

Enjoy awesome ROM!

High-Five yourself over rooting your phone!

Profit???

Can some enterprising soul clean up what I just wrote and put it in a form that is useful? Thanks! :-)

Also, Ocnbrze, you are awesome. Thank you!

what you just said is actually all in the guide. but thanx for breaking it down like that.

I want to root my Evo so bad so I can get rid of all the Sprint crap that is just taking up space (i.e. Sprint TV, Sprint Zone, Sprint Football etc.) but Im afraid of screwing up my phone forever as it seems like such a complicated process. I barely got through learning how to install SDK on my phone. Rooting my phone would be like pulling teeth for me.
WHY OH WHY is Sprint obsessed with their stupid apps that no one uses.

it looks quite intimidating i know, you should have seen me when i first started reading about rooting my phone last year. the process is quite easy really. you just need the right driver. you then run the program and enter the beta key and you are rooted. just follow the guide step by step. we are here to help if you need it.

It really isn't complicated. Also, it's worth noting that you can unroot (tho without s-off) and still get your warranty honored in almost all likelyhood.

Moreover, if your phone did get ****ed up, assuming you have insurance, call warranty insurance claims and tell them that you lost it. You pay the deductible you would have had to pay anyway, and get a brand new evo.

But seriously, rooting is simple. Just follow the instructions step by step. I had done it before with unrevoked, but I learned a lot today.

If you do the wipe stuff, nothing bad will happen to you. My issues were caused because I didn't wipe the phone. This root isn't quite as friendly as unrevoked was, but it is still quite easy. Get off the fence. A man who straddles a fence for too long is bound to get an awfully sore crotch.

Awesome guide. My first time rooting my phone and it was a breeze thanks to these instructions.

A couple of questions. I've got my phone exactly how I want it. Apps, app settings, phone settings, home screen layouts, etc. I've used settings, manage applications to move many of my apps to my SD card. I've used Titanium to back up all user apps and system data.

1) Let's say I want to try another ROM. Right before I flash the new ROM I do a Nandroid backup. What do I do to get the phone like it was before with the new ROM? I assume I use Titanium to restore apps and app data (but not system data I've read). So I would then only need to re-organize my home screens and re-do my system settings but apps and app data will be restored? Correct? Will the apps appear in market for market updates?

2) Let's say I didn't like the ROM and want to go back to where I was before. So I boot into recovery and restore the last Nandroid. Am I exactly where I was before flashing the new ROM? Does Nandroid account for apps that were moved to the SD card? Or do I first need to move all my apps back to the phone from the SD card before doing the Nandroid backup in the first place?

1.yes you are correct. you will have to redo your settings but with titanium backup(tb) you can restore your apps and its data. and correct you should not restore system data. it could conflict with your current rom as it will have bits of the previous rom with it. and since you are using tb you do not need to download anything from the market.

2.when restoring nandroid backup you will return to the previous state of your phone before making the nandroid backup. everuthing inlcluding your apps and data and settings will be back to where it was before. and as far as apps on the card it will depend on how you moved your apps. if you used apps2sd through the phone settings then some of the apps may be missing from the homescreen. you can just add them back. if you used a2sd, then the symbolic link on the phone internal memory will still be there, so yes your phone will still know where to find the apps on your card. for more details on a2sd check the op. i added a section on moving apps to the card.

Thanks! A clarification on my 1st question. Will the apps that I restored via TB appear in the market under my applications so that I will continue to receive update notifications?

For the second question. I'm assuming apps2sd is the stock utility on the phone to move apps to the SD card. So are you saying the icons might not be where they were before, but the apps are still there and I just need to add the icon back to the homescreen?

I also noticed in TB there is the ability to move apps to the SD card. I didn't use it as I was unsure if it was the right approach or not. Is TB basically using app2sd so the end result would be the same as if you moved the apps to the SD card via settings - manage applications?

1.yes they appear as normally they would in the market for updates.
2.correct your apps will still be there, just not the icon. it does not happen all the time, but sometimes it will do that.
3.correct it functions just like apps2sd.

So, i'm rooting an evo and when I get to the point where revolutionary wants me to download clockworkmod, I get a pop up from window sthat says "revolutionary.exe has stopped working" and makes me close the program.

Has anyone experienced this? I just rooted another evo on sunday and didn't encounter this problem

Do you have s-off? If you do you can just flash a recovery. Go to the switching recoveries section of the guide. get amon ra then flash the su file.

Try running revolutionary as admin. Also, run it from a folder in my documents or the desktop. That should take care of any possible UAC related issues.

Edit: to run as admin, either right click, run as admin, or right click, properties, compatibility tab, check the "run this program as administrator" checkbox.

+1 on the above suggestions, but if those don't work, have you taken Win updates since then?

If so, and if you have a kind of typical setup, you can can regress back to that previous system setup and go from there.

Apologies that I cannot give the steps as it's been a while since doing this in Windows, but if this applies to your situation, I'm sure one of our compadres can give the setup.

Failing even that, believe it or not, chkdsk may be your friend - you may have a tangled directory entry for revolutionary.
