Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

You can't transfer any thing to you phone quilter in recovery.. Boot your phone up.. Then select use drive as disk... Some putters have different langege but your phone has to he booted up

Is this because it's changed somehow? I was always able to do it before. Thanks for your reply.

do you have s-off? how are installing it?

Yes, s-off. I am installing it from the root of the card. It is during Hboot. Does the old image need deleted first? The new image automatically starts to install.

I also have the wiper zip on the card but the new rom image starts to load automatically.

instead of wiping the directories, could i just delete everything? then use my titanium restore after the rom update?

Just wanted to throw in my 2 cents and say thank you to all you guys that were working on this!
being that this is the first time ive rooted/flashed anything ever
and seeing Revolutionary and everything go to work put simply what you guys do is brilliant

The guide worked great. Only confusion was enabling disc mode to get files on the EVO. Besides that, it worked exactly right!

Question...I have apps on my SD card but just installed titanium backup. Is it possible to restore those apps or am I pretty much screwed there and need to redownload everything?

I happy to report that using a TB backup from one device and dumping it on another to use to restore your apps works flawlessly. Didn't think I'd have a problem but you never know.

With Ti backup, as long as you just restore the .apks (apps themselves) you could transfer them between myriad devices. Data is not transferable, nor is it transferable between aosp roms and sense roms. Hope that helps...

Congratulations to all Evo owners who were previously stuck on Gingerbread without a root solution. Now you can fully unlock your phone's potential!

I see that this thread grew really, really fast since it was created, a testament to how many people wanted this root solution. Unfortunately, I'm also seeing a lot of people requiring assistance with the procedure, and having everyone post into one thread means things get way too disorganized, and some members' requests for help gets lost in the mess.

So I'm going to lock this thread. In the meantime, if you have a problem rooting, please create a new thread in this rooting forum. Please don't post in someone else's thread unless your problem is the same issue. This will help the experienced users make sure everyone is taken care of.

Thanks!

Everything went perfectly. No issues anywhere and everything installed fine, clockwork installed correctly, backup was a-ok s-off and all that good shit, but my phone just is stuck in a rebooting cycle. Please help me

pull the battery out and go to recovery (press and hold power+vol down) and wipe dalvik cache and cache. were trying to flash a rom?

No, wasn't trying to flash a rom. Nothing fancy.

Uhh, how do i wipe the caches? I see wipe cache in clockwork but it says nothing about dalvik and whatnot. I was going to do this before, but from what I understand clockwork is touchy and I don't wanna screw it all up.

I just reinstalled superuser, started it right before I saw your reply. Once again, it's all good on the install front.

yeah clockwork mod is not my favorite recovery you should read the switching recoveries. it will show you how to change to amon ra2.3.

Yep I'm in recovery right now.

Edit: Ha, I'mma wear out my f5 key by the day's end.

Edit2: I figured out where the wipe cache stuff was after I notice "Advanced" They have been wiped. I then rebooted the phone and that's when I had the "Oh crap it's still just rebooting over and over again", and now I am back in recovery.

Yep I'm in recovery right now.

download the amon ra file in the guide
rename it as per the guide
in recovery select mounts and storage then select mount usb storage
move the file to the root of the card(not in any folder)
then from there you power off then press and hold power+vol down
and hboot should do its thing

once you are in amon ra then wipe dalvik cache and cache and reboot.
