Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

Glad you got your root on. Two things to remember, first always make a nandroid backup before making any changes. Second, make sure you have plenty of battery before you start flashing anything.

Any other questions/issues, feel free to ask. We are here to help.

Can we be plugged in the wall or into PC also?

When you are in recovery, the phone will not charge. I recommend at least 50% battery before you flash anything. This gives you plenty of time on the battery if you get into trouble and need to fix a problem. Some don't flash unless they have a full charge. It is personal preference, but I recommend 50% at least. Most times if your phone dies in the middle of a flash from recovery, you should still be able to charge it with the phone off and fix any issues. If you are flashing a radio update and your phone dies in the middle, it will likely brick your phone just like pulling the battery during a radio flash.

Quick qusetion How do I delet old backups now that i rooted. I just hit back up by accident and i have 3 now.. LOL

it depend what recovery you have. in clockwork mod they are in the folder named cockwork mod. if you have amon ra then they are in a folder called nandroid. you can use a file manager like es or astro to navigate and delete the files on your sd card or you can connect via usb and delete or transfer the file to the pc.

A question on Titanium Backup. I understand that if/when I restore I am not to restore system data, just user apps and user app data. Given that I want to make sure I understand which are the right choices in the Titanium backup batch menu.

1) On backup itself. So only choose "backup all user apps"? Does this choice also backup user app data, or do I need to also choose "backup all system data" to also backup user app data and settings?

2) On restore (if changing ROMs). Would the appropriate choice then be "restore missing apps with data" or "restore all apps with data" or something else?

1.yes. do not chose backup all system data. the system data will contain bits and pieces of the previous rom and could cause issues with your current rom

2.yes.restore all apps with data is the one you want. just double check and make sure that you do not have any system apps being restored. they will be in red.

i am very new to the evo, smart phones, and rooting. I tried running the revolutionary program but it has yet to even find my phone...i have usb set to charge only, debugging mode on, and fastboot off. don't know if it makes any difference, using windows vista, it shouldn't since revolutionary uses dos commands...very very new, any help would be greatly appreciated...looking forward to being rooted

do you have htc sync installed on your computer? try uninstalling it. does your computer able to recognize your phone? it might be the cable. also make sure any anti-virus software is not running.

You say you did all of this? do be careful how you rename it, like he said.

speaking of recovery i would really recommend that everyone switch to amon ra 2.3. it is a much better recovery then clockwork mod. you can get the recovery here:PC36IMG RA 2.3.zip
here are the instructions:
1.download the file.
2.rename the file by erasing the "_RA_2.3" part of the name so that it is only named PC36IMG. make sure not to add ".zip" to the name as windows hides extensions.
3.transfer the file to the root (that means not in any folder) of the sd card.
4.power off (you most likely need to uncheck fastboot. settings/apps/uncheck fastboot.) then press and hold power+vol down.
5.hboot should see the file and select yes to update.
6.select no to reboot because we want to go into recovery and make a nandroid backup.
7.select recovery.
8.select backup and restore and select backup
9. select the first three and wimax. the other partitions do not need to be backed up. always keep one nandroid backup with wimax keys backed up on your computer.
10.now you can reboot.
11.using a file manager of some sort or even through your computer via usb, you should rename or delete the PC36IMG file on your card. otherwise you will be asked to update every time you go to the hboot screen. you do not need that file any more.

Do you have s-off? I take it you have the PC36IMG file downloaded and put on the root of your card. Make sure it is named exactly PC36IMG. Windows hides extensions so do not add a .zip at the end or it will end up .zip.zip and will fail. Let us know how far you are.

Yes I have s-off and have rooted files and superuser. Iit starts to run zip then says aborting.

Just a suggestion, perhaps you could download the recovery again, make sure it is named correctly, just erase what he said, and put it onto ur card again? Make sure the one you put on already is deleted first though. Then try it again?
