Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

I've rooted my previous EVO just fine on the same computer. I'll try on another computer n see if it'll work. thanks for the tips

do you have the old drivers used for unrevoked on your computer still? you might want to unistall those. not sure if that is the issue, but i would try that. and just to be sure you installed the htc drivers from the revolutionary wiki right?

Ok cool So as long as all my apps are on my phone when I partition my card then I can just add my contacts and other things I want on my card. I Think I will be good with this. I have my nandroids backed up and my contacts, music and stuff like that on my computer already. so partition and add only what i want on the card. These don't need to be in files just placed on the card? I got it.

So I finally got revolutionary to read my phone n was able to enter my key n everything only kuz I had to restore my comp to factory (which I really didn't wanna do lol) well I got this error saying something like sending to Caroline or along those lines. Now my phone keeps turning on n off on its own every minute n it doesn't even read my SD card. Any ideas? Please help, I can't even use my phone

Try pulling the battery then boot to hboot. Do you have s-off in the top left corner? If so, select recovery and see if you have recovery.

no, it's still s-on. do u know why my sd card is not detected? because during the process of using revolutionary, the error also mentioned domething about "error while partitioning sd card" or something

I would try and run revolutionary again. Until you get s-off, you can't do much to fix it.

Formatted it using my comp n still doesnt show up on the phone but when I plug my phone via usb to my comp about my comp needs to install "qualcomm CDMA technologies MSM driver"

try installing the htc sync drivers if they are not already. i have never seen that before. maybe also try and see if you have anther card available to use. just make sure that it is not a 2g card. they never work well with the evo.
 
can this root process be utilized on a EVO 4G Shift, that has GB? My son is begging me to root his phone.

Install HTC sync on my comp? I also tried another 8gb n when I got to settings to check, j its not mounted n the worse part is my phone doesn't charge anymore n it turning on n off every minute is frustrating kuz I can't even use it for calls or anything

man, i'm so sorry that you are having such a tough time with this.

so to get a better picture of what is going on. you still have s-on, correct? and you can't boot up your phone?

the only other thing i can think of is to try a hard reset in hboot. go to hboot and hit clear storage. and if that does not work then you might want to take your phone in, since you have s-on.

i do not know what else to tell you at this point in time.

thanks ocnbrze for all the help. i kinda gave up on it n already called to get my phone replaced. it should be here tues or wed and hopefully it'll work for me. i just don't get how i did exactly everything the same as my first evo n got it rooted n was changing roms n kernels having a blast seeing what was out there. well if it don't work on the next phone, u'll be hearing from me lol

again, thanks to everyone else who helped... very much appreciated.
 
for some reason revolutionary.exe is not reading my phone

I installed it again and it worked but i cant find the superuser file on my sd card. it bothers me that im so close but so far. help me!

^^^ or on my apps list on my phone. what did i do wrong?

where are you placing the file on the card? it needs to be on the root (not in any folders). do not extract the file. it needs to be zipped.
 
Ok, I got a brand spanking new 16gb class 10, yep, micro SDcard. I partitioned it and transferred all of my stuff over and it works like a charm, I guess. How do I go about using the a2sd function?

nice! you need to checkout the op for each rom or read the changelog for the rom. it should be listed. most roms have the support for it. i know mik3d, mikg, synergy, most of king's and his crew have it as well.
