Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

My baseband version is 2.15.00.05.02. The Wiki says these versions are supported:

HTC EVO 4G (supersonic) 2.15.0001, 2.16.0001

Is Revolutionary unsafe for rooting my new Evo?

Thanks.

Do you have GB? 2.3.3 or Froyo 2.2?

Looks like you probably have 2.3.3 so you would need to use this guide to root.

Yes, I have 2.3.3, but the Revolutionary Wiki, which this guide suggests I read before doing anything else, says that my baseband version is not supported. Perhaps, I am misunderstanding, however.

****I am confusing HBOOT version with baseband version. Duhhh

Hmm..Not sure about that one bud, sorry. I rooted a evo with 2.3.3 recently but I didn't even check the baseband version so I'm not sure what it had.

You might find the Revolutionary thread over at XDA and ask in there. I think they have one. I know there's a rooting thread over there.

EDIT: Just saw your edit. Ok, so get your root on! :D

we just had an ota that changed the hboot slightly to a different number. but i do believe that revolutionary will work on your phone. i think that the revolutionary team just has not updated the wiki to include this information. people here have reported that it worked on their phone with the latest ota. so i would say go for it. and let us know how it went.

My HBOOT version was 2.16.0001.

Sorry, my acronym recognition is weak. What is OTA?

I've followed the directions step-by-step, but when I launch revolutionary.exe, I get "Waiting for device" and it never stops waiting.

I am connected via USB and set to Charge Only.

Over the Air update, I think is what it means.

Make sure you have htc sync uninstalled. The program not the drivers.

WOW! That was just too easy :D

How can some say that this is hard at all?!
I feel sorry for thouse unlycky ones i guess.

Thanx a mil! Now im not gonna be able too sleep for days ^^,

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
glad that worked for you. now go and get your flash on:D

is everything turned off or uninstalled?
pdanet, doubletwist, dropbox, htc sync, antivirus, firewalls?

debugging on? try toggling debugging while revolutionary is running.
set to disk drive on the phone?
have you tried a different computer?

I probably should move this to rooting for dummies but......if you want ocnbrze, go ahead:p

Yep, all of those are turned off and/or uninstalled.

Yep, debugging on. Don't have her phone right but I will try toggling the debugging. Should I do that after it accepts the beta key?

Then should I try disk drive before or after debugging toggling:p?

No, I have not tried a different computer, I do not have access to another one that's not mine:(

When I rooted my Evo, I never was able to use Unrevoked. I used the Auto-Root script from xhause and rooted on the first try.

The only thing I did differently with my Evo was that I ran the RUU prior to running the script and that seem to get the correct drivers installed. I'm trying to avoid completely wiping her phone so I can use TB to back up some app data before I wipe.

But if I have to run a RUU and it doesn't work, I'll be pissed but........to find root will far out way not having certain data saved.

Thank you for this guide, its great. I'm well on my way, already rooted.

I have a question (perhaps more later) - once the files are flashed can I then remove them from SD card? Instructions are clear to do this with PC36IMG.zip (which is my next step), but is it ok to now remove su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed from sd card? And, with subsequent images, once done can they be removed as well?

Thanks much in advance.

yep now that you are rooted that file you flashed has done its job. you can always delete files after you have flashed them.

FYI, following the instructions as written for using darktremor a2sd requires su before the commands listed. The first time I ran without resulted in a lot of "permission denied" results.

Others may already know this, its been years since this old geek was put out to pasture to become a program manager.

Edit: it didn't make much difference. While I received no permission denied messages, only four apps moved (the same that moved without running as su), as verified with app2sd.

Ok, I don't think im going crazy. Can someone download the latest zip file of revolutionary from the site and tell me that it only includes 5 dlls?

There is no exe in it.

revolutionary-0.4pre4.zip

Yea thanks! I asked a buddy of mine to check it out and he sees it. I discovered the issue was my virus protection. It was stripping the EXE out of the zip and leaving the dlls but never told me it was doing it.

Thanks again!

Ahh..Yes, those pesky virus protection programs. :D

Enjoy your root!

I've downloaded the beta key console for Revolutionary I/O, and the su.2.3.3 signed file. I have tried to follow the instructions in this thread, yet I keep running into not knowing what to do, or, the order in which to proceed. My beta key didn't generate a pass code twice, and as I just got this phone - I'm a little intimidated.

It's insured, but, bricking the phone wouldn't be wise ;)...

If there's anyone out there who would be willing to talk me (or, walk me) through each step in the sequence to get my root on, I'd really appreciate it.

I'm an old fart who's trying to keep up with the younger gen in the tech sense, but, I'm now disabled. If someone helps me to successfully get my root on, I would be willing to create a custom ringtone in my recording studio for them.

Thanks.

ok so before we proceed did you do the steps in the before root section? and to get the key all you need is the serial number, and the hboot. the revolutionary exe file will generate that for you when you run.
