Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

with cm7 you need darktremors. its a script that you flash and you use terminal emulator to move the apps to the sd card. read the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html. there is a section on how to move apps to the sd card and how to use and install darktremors.

My phone just didn't like the combination of CM7, Tiamet and Darktremors. I tried 3 separate times from scratch yesterday to get it to work and it just never got stable.

I had no problem getting everything flashed and working. I looked at the drive stats in Titanium and the apps I were restoring were clearly moving to the ext partition. The problem was whenever there was a reboot. Many of the apps and widgets stopped appearing on the home screens, disappeared from the apps list and apps like Swype needed to constantly be reinstalled/reenabled.

I did a2sd check and everything appeared in order. Did a a2sd reinstall too and it went through the process of checking every app. But I could not get things to stabilize after a reboot. All the home screens got messed up and the apps did not appear in the apps list anymore either. It must not be mounting the file system right or something after a reboot or out of order.

Did a nand restore back to MikG 2.52 and everything is good again. Shame, really wanted to play around with CM7 but if a2sd isn't working right I won't.

UPDATE: I was able to get it to work. I had been trying the Beta 4 and Beta 5 versions of darktremor. I went back to the last official release and that one seemed to be less flaky with CM7.

After I unistall HTC sync, pdanet, etc... Have the phone on usb debugging, put the super user zip on my SD card, put it on charge only n go to run revolutionary... It stays at "waiting for device" even tho my phone is already plugged in. I've tried reinstalling revolutionary, the driver, n even the super user file. Nothing is working. Oh n even ran reflash package n kept getting this error "unable to root. Is your firmware too new?"

Im also the same problem were it stays on "waiting for device...". I Think I've tried everything. we're you able to figure it out. I'm at a dead end. Any suggestions?

Got a2sd working to the best of my knowledge, now when performing backups, flashing roms. And things of that nature, does the process change any?

Also, when I type "a2sd check" in the terminal it says (amongst a host of other things) "no a2sd.swap environment variable found." Does that mean the ext 2 to ext 3 swap didn't go through?

what value did you set your swap? have you moved your apps to the sd card via dt and terminal?

nandroid backups are a complete snapshot of your phone. they are your friend. always do one whenever you are making changes to your phone. so whenever you flash a rom or kernel make a nandroid backup before you do. just in case something goes wrong or you do not like a particular rom or kernel.

in the guide there is a section called nandroids. it goes into a little more details on nandroid backups.

1st Question: Is the MyBackupPro good enough for backing up Apps?

Looks like you slipped through the cracks with your question. Sorry.
I have never tried it, but I used the free version of appmonster to begin with. People in here mention Titanium backup a good bit. the free versions of both of those work, they will copy your app to sd card and restore it later. Though, after flashing a new rom, you would have to return to the Market and get the backup app over again so you can have it to restore.

The paid version of TB allows you to work with apps in batches, restore a bunch, back up a bunch. It also allows you to freeze an app you are considering deleting so you can run that way for a while to make sure you aren't messing up your system by getting rid of it. things start getting weird, just unfreeze it.

I think any app you are familiar with that you know works now would be fine after you root. Just mentioning TB and TB Pro so you would be aware of some of their features.

titanium backup is only for root phones. but mybackup pro will work on nonrooted phones as well.

hi

i have read that 2.3.3 does not work yet . Should i still try the revolutionary?

Thanks

Well, apparently, you haven't read the OP of the thread that you are in because that's precisely what it talks about. 2.3.3 is the same as Gingerbread.

What version do you have? Do you have froyo? Kind of strange it's asking you to update to GB if you are already on GB. Froyo is 2.2

menu > settings > about phone > software information
