Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

I probably should move this to rooting for dummies but......if you want ocnbrze, go ahead:p

Yep, all of those are turned off and/or uninstalled.

Yep, debugging on. Don't have her phone right but I will try toggling the debugging. Should I do that after it accepts the beta key?

Then should I try disk drive before or after debugging toggling:p?

No, I have not tried a different computer, I do not have access to another one that's not mine:(

When I rooted my Evo, I never was able to use Unrevoked. I used the Auto-Root script from xhause and rooted on the first try.

The only thing I did differently with my Evo was that I ran the RUU prior to running the script and that seem to get the correct drivers installed. I'm trying to avoid completely wiping her phone so I can use TB to back up some app data before I wipe.

But if I have to run a RUU and it doesn't work, I'll be pissed but........to find root will far out way not having certain data saved.

Oh well, I've tried everything I can think of.

Anyone have an official RUU I can run, thanks:)

in the rom/kernel sticky i believe the oficial 4.53 RUU is listed in the shipped roms. not sure if that will work with the new hboot, but you can try.

Nothing else seems to be working so, for now, this will be it. I'm tired of messing around with all this again. It likes groundhog day. Uninstall, install, reboot, uncheck, download...............:p

Hi
I am about to download revolution to root my phone as well as do a factory reset on my evo.Right now i use my phone as a hotspot through sprint to be able to use my computers at home as a wifi to get online. Is there anything different that i should do being my only way of being online is with my phone?
I really appreciate it
thanks

ok so before we proceed did you do the steps in the before root section? and to get the key all you need is the serial number, and the hboot. the revolutionary exe file will generate that for you when you run.

OB - I was off of the computer for a bit; as I wrote earlier, I have a neurological disability... I was down for about an hour and a half, or so. First off, I don't know if the phone is 2.15 or 2.16 (whatever that number is [HBOOT?] - my memory is awful, too) - I have the su file, and, the Revolutionary I/O... I just need someone
to walk me through it. It is 3:02 EDT over here - I will check back in about ten minutes.

Okay - it's 3:12... I'm back at the console. If you're there, I've got the USB cable on the ready, and we can start... I really appreciate the timely response to my earlier post, and I hope that I'm not being too much trouble... :)

ok have you done all the things listed in the before root section. before we move forward?

I'm really nervous, and the moron part of my humanity is showing itself... my vision isn't so hot, so, I've got my wife here helping out. What needs to be done prior to getting things started?

My phone is now plugged in to the USB. Do I have to back up data?

I see where you left the link. I'll get my wife to print it, and I'll read it. Will you still be around for awhile?

OceanBreeze,
Your patience is a wonderful thing. Never lose it. I had my wife copy and paste the entire link (opened up); make the print bigger, so I can read it... it is now printing. I'll touch base back with you in awhile. I really appreciate your help, man.

Bb :o

That could really put a damper on your ability to do this. You are a brave soul. :p

i would suggest that you go through the instructions again, Make sure you have downloaded all the files you are supposed to and print out the instructions so you will have them to refer to in case you need to double check a step,

if you happen to be doing this from a laptop, you might consider taking it and yourself to some place that has free wireless, like a library maybe? Then you could post on and ask for help if you need to.

good luck, I would read some of the experiences others have had and see what the solutions have been, maybe copy and paste or print them out, as well. Seems like it either goes great and simple or people get tied up in knots.

oops sorry i missed your post.:o thanx dustwun77.

basically you need the su file on your phone and the revolutionary on your computer. you do need to get the beta key from the website. another way to get the info to get the key rather then following the steps is to pull the battery out to get the serial number. to get the hboot power off then press and hold vol down and power. this will get you to the hboot screen and it is listed on top. use that info to get the key. i you can copy and paste it, it would be easier. either way the key is case sensitive and needs to be exact.

Very good points, won't be able to do that without his hotspot, huh?

Just call me dust, make it easy on yourself. :)

what was that method of copying it again, something about clicking on the upper left hand corner and it giving an option to copy and paste?

I remember that was how I did it and some folk were having a hellacious time getting things entered, I can't remember what step it was on though and I'm not going back unless I have too!

basically so copy the beta key from the website and in the revolutionary command prompt, you could right click the left hand corner of the window and select edit and paste the key in.

the su file is the file that you need to unlock nand protection. it is what enables you to make changes to the system ie flashing roms and kernels. it is a fairly easy process to do. you just run revolutionary enter the beta key and it will finish the process for you. then you just flash the su file and you are done. just follow the steps to the t and you will be good to go.

it says download su superuser via usb cable and put on root not in folder that is my biggest puzzle

When you hook phone up via usb cable, you need to select disk drive for this part.

your pc will recognize your phone as an external drive and ask what you want to do, open it to review files.

you need to put that file you downloaded on to the sd card. Just drag and drop it right onto the name of the card/drive. It will go ON your card but not IN any of the folders.

Then you are good. Tell the phone you want it to be in Charge Only mode and done, at that point. Then follow the guide.
