Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

When you hook phone up via usb cable, you need to select disk drive for this part.

your pc will recognize your phone as an external drive and ask what you want to do, open it to review files.

you need to put that file you downloaded on to the sd card. Just drag and drop it right onto the name of the card/drive. It will go ON your card but not IN any of the folders.

Then you are good. Tell the phone you want it to be in Charge Only mode and done, at that point. Then follow the guide.

great ...so then i do not need to do a factory reset like the rules on before rooting say?

that is optional but recommended. that is up to you.

i downloaded htc drivers.....downloaded su file which i can put on my phone....

question is once i reset my phone will i still be able to get the revolutionary downloaded and get beta key ......i am afraid i will lose internet access.....or maybe i am wrong

You can just copy your whole sd card onto your pc while you are about that file moving step too, if you want. Save all your stuff.

so all that stuff about backing contacts up on google or others for a fee i can just copy sd card and paste it on my computer? yeah i am pretty much computer dummy
i just dont want to lose computer access once i do a reset because this is my only means of being online is this phone..

If you have your contacts and email through google, they are associated with your account that you created or signed in to when you activated the phone and will have to again, if you ever flash a different rom.

not exactly sure if you can restore contacts saved to phone, I have always backed up my contacts to google, not to the phone itself. i am not sure how you make that choice. Think if you have already, they would be safe. If you haven't, long process to get them over to google, I think.

There is an app called Mybackupro from the market, that has been mentioned in here, maybe it saves contacts as well as your user apps, might want to check it out.

so one more thing ....i am about to do this and just wanted to know ...once i do this will my computer recognize my phone as a wireless modem and i will be able to be online without having to do anything extra?
Thanks

if you are talking about tethering like with the hotspot for free? yes and no. when you are rooted you will have just the stock rom. you need to flash a rom that has it hacked. most roms will have that feature. also read this:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...net-tethering-w-evo-4g-3g-wireless-wired.html

did you already dl the Revolutionary tool to your pc?

once you do this, the process of getting rooted, like it says in the guide without me trying to enumerate all the steps, you have the same functionality that you had before with all the associated costs.

Different roms you may flash in the future have different capabilities in that regard that you can familiarize yourself with in the event you decide to flash them.

Sorry the biggest reason for rooting my phone is to be able to tether to it without paying that crazy fee.Could you explain about having to flash a rom for it to work? i see the directions on downloading the tether app you sent me and can downloaf it but i have not got a clue on flashing a rom

Just get yourself rooted and then go from there. You can download and install the wireless tether app from market for free to tether.

everything you need to get you started is in the guide. there is a section on how to flash a rom.

two ways. go to hboot and see if you have s-off or download terminal emulator and type in su if the symbol changes to from $ to # then you are rooted.

and if you are then congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So I have a question. I've just loaded my 2nd Rom. I was running the Evolved R3charged 3D. I liked it but wanted to try something else.

I dl'ed the Go Green Lightning Rom. So I did a Nandroid Backup and a TB. Then I dragged onto the sdcard, wiped everything twice, then superwiped, and loaded the Rom. No problems. Then I wanted to go back to my Nandroid and when I select on it in recovery it sets to load, I hit the power button, and it says "oops there was a problem". So this is the second time I've tried to load a Backup Nandroid and it didn't work. Am I doing something wrong?

I did change the title on my sd card so I would know what it was but I didn't add any spaces or weird symbols.

Any ideas?
Thanks Naters

go into settings/applications/and uncheck fastboot

Is it the stock card or a different one? Make sure there are no spaces at the beginning or end of the name also.

Hi, I rooted a friend's EVO completely fine, but unrooting is causing a problem for me. I have s-on at the moment, but getting stock rom and stock recovery is where I'm stuck at. When I transfer the file to my sd card's root and go to hboot, I let it do it's thing and says no image found and I can't update.

Are there any other files I could use aside from what's in the OP?

What is the hboot version number? Are you naming the file EXACTLY PC36IMG.zip? Do not add a zip at the end if you are on a windows pc. It will be named .zip.zip.

It is the stock SD card that came with the phone. I tried doing it again. I had added a few letters to the back-up, but then today I deleted them on the card to try again. It made 8 dots on the screen and then said "oops error" again. Each time I've tried I wipe Dalvik cache, cache, and data then superwipe.

After the last try I reloaded EvolvedRom 3D again since it was on my card still.

I just worry that since I can never get a Nandroid to restore that I'll lose my wimax keys or something important eventually. I don't know. Is it possible to have a bad SD card? I would find that weird since I can flash new Roms with out a problem.

what did you name the nandroid?

All I did was add R3EVO to the end of the serial number. I've since taken them off of it.
I didn't change anything on the folder that has the date on it.
