Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

All I did was add R3EVO to the end of the serial number. I've since taken them off of it.
I didn't change anything on the folder that has the date on it.

when you take the nake off of it can you restore it? if not then try and backup your content of your card to the computer and then re-format your card (this will erase everything on your card) place everything back on your card and then try and make a nandroid nackup again and then see if you can restore it.

I only mess with my phone when there is an absolute need to change. So I am rusty at this. I rooted my EVO 4G, and original device bought on day #1 they were sold (old hardware), I updated it in February to Supersonic. I don't know how to find what version but when I boot into the bootloader screen, it shows HBOOT - 0.93.0000. In reading the rEVOlutionary documentation it says it has update for HBOOT 2.15.0000 and 2.16.0000. So am I correct in determining that I can NOT use Revolutionary to move my phone to Android 2.3?

Alternatively, does anyone know, if I can't use Revolutionary, but I am rooted Supersonic, can I accept the OTA to update my phone (if I am willing to lose my rooting)? I don't mind losing root at this point (I don't want to) but if there are no other options, I would like to get to 2.3 because of the enhancements released today on Google Plus.

you are correct. you need to root with unrevoked. follow this guide: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies.html

Thanks, that is actually what I used to Root. I rooted UNrevoked, but the rom I think is Supersonic.

I used the guide you pointed me to and did exactly as it says (the last time I rooted). I am trying to get from where I am to the Revolutionary.

Is what you're saying that I should root to UNrevoked AGAIN now and that will give me the correct version of HBOOT so that I can move forward with Revolutionary.

I really appreciate the response and I am sorry to sound clueless.

no. there is no need to root with revolutionary. do not worry about your hboot. once you gain root you can flash pretty much anything you want that is the freedom of being rooted. you just need to get s-off and a custom recovery and you are good to go. just run unrevoked and flash away. there is no need to upgrade up to run revolutionary.

Regarding my problem, it's fine now. I was doing everything right it just didn't seem to work. The second file was down for maintenance or something but it was working now so the Evo is fine.

Thanks for the help anyways

Partitioning and Moving Apps to the Card

Partition Your Card
it is recommended that you do this before trying to flash a rom.
so here are the directions on how to do it:
1.copy your content of the card to a computer because partitioning will wipe the card's content.
2.go into recovery and select partition your sd card
3.enter 32 for swap, and 1024 or 2048 for ext2, and do the rest for FAT
4.select upgrade ext2 to ext3
6.select usb-ms toggle and transfer your contents of your card on your computer back to the card.
5.go to the main menu and do a full wipe (min data, dalvik cache and cache)
6.flash the superwipe
7.flash the rom of your choice.
8.reboot

from now on it is recommended you wipe dalvik cache, cache, data and sd ext.before flashing roms. MAKE SURE THAT YOU DO NOT SELECT WIPE SD CARD as it will do just that. your card will be erased. also make sure that when making a nandroid backup to select sd ext to be backed up as well.
In step 3 above, what is the difference/consequence of choosing a 1024 vs. 2048 size for ext2??

THANKS!!

And what is that particular extension...the ext2...used for (and compared to ext3)??

i do not know too much about the differences between the two. mainly from what i understand is that ext2 is good for performance but ext3 is much more stable. it has always been recommended to me do upgrade ext2 to ext3. i suppose you could try it on ext2 but i opt out for stability and have the speed of my card take care of the performance part.

thanks guys, still one problem, how do i do this without a real internet connection? I run off pdanet, and i plan on running off the wifi hotspot after i re-root.

what i want to do is flash CM7, with some good radios and tiamat kernel for battery tweeks and overclocking with setcpu.

My evo is still pretty much stock, but wasn't always. until that fateful day i decided to flash my first backup and leave it stock. a few days after that my phone OTA updated behind my back and turned S on. I was running CM7 with G apps before that.

are you asking how to root without an internet connection? if so then just download the files on your evo. they will be found on your sd card under the download folder. then just transfer the file over to the computer.

Ocn, Thanks for the help.

I did take everything off the card, Formatted it, and then put everything back on to the SD card. Then wiped Dalvick cache, and cache.

I then tried to restore the nandroid and it made a row and a half of dots before it said there was an error. (that is the farthest it's ever gone)

So, I'm not sure what I keep doing wrong with this. I have gone through and set up my Rom again. It is doing some things differently than before. Also the lock screen doesn't have any shortcuts on it this time. Can I flash right over the Rom with the same one? Do I need to wipe everything to do that?

Thanks again for all of the help.

I'm with you on the stability...makes sense. And perhaps you even remember my issues with the stability of my card in the past and it not mounting!! :D:D:eek:

I also should have noticed the conversion from ext2 to ext3 in the instructions because I already knew the purpose of partitioning and where the apps2sd were going TO (that ext!!) That's what I get for replying on my phone in bed at 2am :(

THANKS!

Ok..What recovery are you using? And what is your process to flash a rom?

I've had issues restoring a nand after reformatting my card and putting it back, I'm not sure why and didn't look into it too much because to be honest there wasn't really anything I desperately needed on it and I theme and develop on my phone so I don't use nands too much.

Sounds like a fresh start for you would be best.

Download ROM of your choice (recommend MikG)
Wipe everything EXCEPT sdcard with Amon RA recovery
Flash the rom and reboot and let it settle for a couple minutes
Set up your accounts and once they are done syncing reboot and create a nand
Reboot let rom settle again
Reboot and see if you can restore that nand.
Now you will know if you are having issues with restoring nands or if it was just that particular nand.
If it's all nands then I would say reflash your recovery, maybe it got corrupted somehow. If not then just delete your other nands and move on with the ones you have now.

I am using Amon Ra 2.3.

What I did was,

Create Nand, Backup to Titanium, drag new Rom onto root of card, Wipe Dalvik cache, cache, and data (each twice), Superwipe twice, flash new Rom. That all worked, I then restored Titanium, and used that Rom for a day with no problems.

Then I decided I didn't like something on the home screen so I next,

Booted to recovery, wiped everything again, then chose Nand I wanted to restore, and tried restoring, It said "oops" and then I came here. I am able to flash a new Rom but not able to go back to a previous back-up.

When you say to fwipe everything but Card, is that just the 3 everyone does plus superwipe? I'm nervous to lose my radios if that's even possible.

Thanks for the help,

I understood it that you tried to restore a nand after you reformatted your card, did I misunderstand? If so sorry.

Try what I mentioned above and see if you can restore a nand that way. At least then you will know that it must be something you are doing with your setup or something, which really wouldn't make much sense but I suppose that could be an issue.

If you are using amon ra, ditch the superwipes, no need. Do factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, wipe data, wipe system, wipe boot, wipe sd android secure, and wipe sd ext. JUST DO NOT WIPE SD CARD, for obvious reasons.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Nick, You are right, I did try to restore a Nand after I formatted my SD card. I dragged everything onto the PC and then dragged it back after, then tried restoring a Nand on the card.

I'm going to Back-up my apps and data with Titanium and then try all over again. Thanks for the help.

No problem and good luck. I would say if it still errors after that flash your recovery again.

Well, I found out what my issue was. I was making a Nandroid, then rebooting to put a new Rom on the card. This time I put a new rom on the card, (Merge) made a Nandroid, then booted the new Rom and set it up. Then went back wiped everything and restored the previous backup.

So thanks for the help. I appreciate it!

So...um...yeah...I just tried to boot into recovery and partition my card using Clockwork and did NOT see the options above. If I go to the "Advanced" menu in Recovery and chose "Partition SD Card" the only options I have are:

128M
256M
512M
1024M

That is right off the bat...NO options like in the instructions above.

I chose "1024M" and the next screen allows me to select "Swap Size" of the recommended 32M.

My ASSumption is that Clockwork only allows you a 1024M partition?? I'm gonna go to Amon RA and I'll be I'll get the options mentioned in the Guide above....

------
EDIT: I'm leaving the above information in case someone else finds what I found...but I went to ROM Manager and chose the "alternate recovery" method to flash Amon RA. Booted again into recovery and ALL the options in the Guide for partitioning were available.

Something else I noticed brings up another question....the suggestion size of the partition is either 1024 or 2048 but I noticed that one can choose a LARGER partition. Besides larger partitions being overkill or becoming ridiculous, is there a limitation with any of the apps2sd options that "caps" the partition to 2048?? Just wondering...

no i think that you can set it larger, but i think it will be useless. i have a 2g partition and i have somewhere like 160 apps on my card with almost 1.25g left. so i doubt you will need a larger partition.

and yes you are right the directions were for amon ra. i will notate that in the guide.

I'm having a little issue...not too too concerned...but it is WAY past my beddy-bye time so I'm posting this and will deal with it in the morning...

So I had a Class 2 or 4 card and upgraded to the Patriot Class 10 that was recommended. Got it in the mail and spent this evening partitioning in preparation for flashing a Mik ROM.

I know that the partitioning section of the guide goes through the partitioning process, reloading the card with the previous card's contents, and right then and there wiping and flashing the new ROM. I did NOT have time since it is late to flash the new ROM so I thought I'd just partition the card, upgrade from ext2 to ext3, reload the contents of my "old" card from earlier this evening and boot back up. I thought that I'd simply be "changing cards" but for the fact that I partitioned and upgraded ext2 to ext3 with the hope that my phone would be "as it was" before playing with the new card.

Wellllll, little issue...

It appears that NONE of the apps installed on my SD card with my "old" card are installed/recognized by the phone. ONLY the apps "on the phone" are available. I launched Titanium and, indeed, my SD card apps are "uninstalled"...

I was wondering why this happened?? Is this because of the partitioning?? Or did I lose some sort of "tie" to .android_secure or some other essential "link" to my SD apps.

Like I said, NOT too concerned....I have my "old" card that I can simply pop back in....I have NOT wiped, have NOT flashed anything as I was intending on going ahead with the wipe and flash of the Mik ROM in the morning along with installing my apps...but just wondering what is happening with my new card?? Was this something expected with the way I didn't continue with the wipe and flash of a ROM after partitioning...or is there, possibly, a problem with the integrity/function of my card??

THANKS!!

well if you used apps2sd before you partitioned your card then what you did was delete the part of the app that was on the card. but the apps that you did not move are still on your phone.

I guess I'm still awake...1/2 way at least...:D

When you refer to "apps2sd" prior to partitioning, you are referring to NON-darktremor type app to sd card installation, yes??...the "stock" app 2 sd option?? If so, then that is what happened.

Is there any way to re-establish the link or is it lost and I simply need to use Titanium to reinstall??

I was also wondering if this result should have been EXPECTED on my part?? Was it the act of partitioning that deleted the part of the app on the card or any would any sort of non-partitioning-new-card installation would have had the same result?? I'm just trying to learn WHERE/HOW the link to the part of the apps on the card was lost and now considered "uninstalled"...??

In the morning when I get up...and when I have time to flash the Mik ROM...at that point, I'll be reinstalling my apps from Titanium and the Mik ROM will put the ENTIRE app where it needs to go: on the partition that I previously created, yes?
