Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

Thanks

I tried loading amon ra but my phone didn't recognise it

I followed switching recoveries as well

I rooted the evo 3 days ago and followed rules for revolutioary but cannot make sense of the rest ..have not made kernals or tons or annything else so I got stuck

I am most familiar with amon ra to tell you how to do the rest, so how about we try to get you loaded with that?

Usually the problem seems to be that people change the file name incorrectly, or they unzip it, or don't put it on the root of their card because they don't know that that means not in a folder.

What did you do and what did you see when you tried it?

Here's some more info on a2sd, it was written back in the froyo days, but really still holds true.

thanks for finding and posting that.

I still have a question though. Is it necessary with roms like Mik3db1 or 2.5x to use terminal emulator at all? I have done it with current setup to see if it would move more stuff, but i already had activity in my a2sd partition, according to TB pro overview screen before I did it. and what about this d-cache moving stuff?

Another good point is that it will only move apps that can be run from partition, so I guess if one can't or won't go, it is because it shouldn't,

i took off part of the file like it said to do...put the file on my sd card not in a file and then you reboot and it says that the phone will recognise it and update

Bump...

No one has really come up with anything new that I have seen, but ALL of the steps the guide lists need to be looked into and complied with.

basically people will ask you stuff that goes along with it, in no particular order, like, do you have usb debugging on? Check and see if it toggled itself off, it does that. Did you download the drivers from the site? did you turn off your firewall and anti virus? did you uninstall htc synch, if you have it, but leave the drivers? Is your phone in charge only mode? have you uninstalled apps that communicate with the phone already, like pda net, doubletwist or easy tether? from BOTH the phone and pc? have you tried rebooting the phone and pc since you uninstalled this stuff, have you tried booting the pc with the phone hooked up already, did you wiggle your connections to make sure they are tight? How many times have you tried it? try it again, :p have you tried it on another pc. and other steps the guide mentioned but i have forgotten. lots of times one of the steps has been overlooked and some times it just takes repetition.

Post back with questions. good luck!

help im trying to root my new evo and revolutionary wont recognize the phone once it is plugged into the computer it still says waiting on device have tried everything can somebody help me.

It has to be exact. really. did you copy and paste it?
Did you uncheck fastboot in menu/settings/apps?
did you JUST reboot, or did you boot up using the volume button down, power button down, till the recovery shows up?

i unchecked fastboot....i had downloaded to my desktop.....then moved it over to my open window sd card

so it was on your desktop, you found it in windows explorer and just removes the part of the name it told you too, then you put it on the sd card, like right on the name of the drive/card, in explorer, so it wouldn't go into any folders but on the root...

Then, you booted into recovery with the buttons held down like it says to?

i dont know why now ....i had deleted it off my computer so that i can redownload it and the website will not let me download it again. omg

i renamed it on my desktop....opened up sd window with usb on my desktop and slid it over and it went on my card not in any folder...problem now is i go back to swithching recoveries click on the link to download pc35img ra2.3.zip and the website will not let me download it again so i tried another on the site which is pc36img ra2.2.1.zip and it loaded but i dont know if that would work as well

don't still have first one on card?

edit: I imagine it would 'work', I haven't tried it though and don't know what is different in that version. Have read somewhere that older versions of recovery didn't support backing up wimax keys. I don't know if that would be an issue in this case.

Don't know why you can't dl, though, like i said, I did it right after you told me you couldn't.

Pc35? Pretty sure it should be pc36img. Do this, download Rom manager from market and scroll to the bottom and select the flash alternative recovery and you will be good to go.

I think that is a typo, but damn, that sounds like an easy way to do it.

I have never used rom manager, and didn't know where to get it. Been avoiding it due to warnings in here. Be great if it would get Amon Ra on there for him and he could get on with it all. :)

That's exactly what it will do. Then uninstall rm right after you flash recovery.

yeah the wifi still says (no root) your kernal doesnt have all the neccasary features

so if i downloaded the synergy rom that would have the kernal rom and wifi all together?

well, i am sure that would tell some people something, but not me.

Thanks for looking though.

I am east coast and have to be at work at 6am, so I am going to have to point you in right direction and turn you loose. others will help if you need it

basically, you seem to be at step 7 in switching recovery section.

you need to make a backup of your current rom. the directions are right there. The backup is called a nandroid, the next section gives you info on what that is.

I would suggest a stable Sense rom that I like for you to start. You need to look at directions under Flashing. If you make a nandroid first off here, you don't need to do it again right now, but you will at other times.

Here is the rom i was talking about. wait, let me get this to you

If synergy sounds good to you, then go for it. I am fairly sure it would have a wifi tether app or hotspot, hacked like you want, built right in from the get go.

here is one that I have actually used though.

Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites! It is Mik3d Beta 1. It is the rom. try the wifi in it when you get it loaded and see what it tells you.

the roms come with their own kernel. i didn't stay on that one very long but I think it should work. for simplicity sake, I am going to tell you one that I know works. Remember, sense kernels go on sense roms, after you have flashed and rebooted.

I suggest http://kernels.teamw.in/files.php?fid=710&kid=336 golden monkey 1

These are found from the roms and kernels page. Check them out later, make nandroid backups and flash away!

The directions to wipe and flash these files are located in the flashing part of this sticky. Just step by step through it and you will be fine.

I got to hit the sack, Let me know how you do and ask in here if you need help. You got it?

You aren't doing something right with wifi tether, because you don't need to flash a rom to use it. You have the stock kernel which should work just fine. You do have an app in your app drawer called superuser right?
