Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

i know but i would start with mikg 2.5 or mik3d and go from there. both are great roms. with mikg2.50 you might want to upgrade to 2.52 it has the fixes that the 4.53 ota has cooked in. so here is what you do:
1.make a nandroid backup
2.wipe dalvik cache, cache, and data.
3.flash the superwipe (found in the guide)
4.flash mik2.5
5.reboot to make sure everything is working. you can even get it setup if you like.
6.wipe dalvik cache and cache and flash 2.51 patch
7.in the same recovery session you can then flash the 2.52 patch.

so like i said start with that one, then move on from there. remember to always make a nandroid backup. they are your friend. i'm a flashaholic so i flash roms constantly.

there is now sense 3.5 roms coming out. they are still in beta, but they are pretty cool so far.

Ahh but he has MikG 2.53 out now! :D All that included in one package plus some updated apps, so if you updated to 2.52 and have you apps updated no need to flash 2.53.

And don't forget about the Runnymede sense 3.5 that newt ported to the evo and that Mik has now taken over. :D:D:cool::cool: This rom is beast and will be the best thing, IMO, you can put on your evo.

I am running it now and it's awesome. No 4g, yet, is the biggest problem. If it can happen mik will get it. ;)

I would like to say thanks for reminding me about the usb debugging and that I deserve a double facepalm for failing to PAY ATTENTION to details.

Thanks again

Sorry but he did ask for it. :p:D

Hiya...

Couple questions...

Yeah, I just saw the 2.53 post as well. I installed 2.52 yesterday and was wondering WHICH apps are updated?? Like Facebook (e.g., 1.6.4 is currently 1.7.1 in the market I think) and stuff like that?? Something I can do manually without flashing perhaps??

Also, if i were to flash 2.53 with me currently running 2.52, am I correct that I do NOT need to do a full wipe (data included)...just cache and dalvik and flash 2.53 yes??

THANKS!

Yea you could "probably" get away with that, but definitely nandroid prior and definitely don't mention any bugs/problems until you full wipe.

However, honestly, if you updated to 2.52 you are good to go. No need to flash again, just manually update your apps and you are all set.

Happy you got it going and enjoy. You are in the right spot with MikG..well until he gets that runnymede sense 3.5 pimped out. ;):D

I have to agree. I love the MikG 2.52 ROM and is my ROM of choice at the present time.

But you speak of Runnymead? Sounds interesting. Will have to watch for that one...

Hello...

So I rooted my phone back when I had Froyo, then moved to the rooted stock Gingerbread ROM and now, as of yesterday, flashed Mik 2.52. Using Titanium, I now have various backed-up apps, user and system apps, that operate under Froyo, Gingerbread and the Sense + Gingerbread Mik ROM.

I was wondering how to best go about...now and for the future...keeping track of all the apps I have backed up with Titanium with my 3 essentially different OS's?? I'll play with some apps, install and reinstall others, but don't know how to keep track of one app that might be "Mik-only" and will NOT work if I happen to flash back the stock Gingerbread app?? Or if I flash back to the stock Gingerbread, I don't want to accidentally re-install an updated app from another ROM that I backed up using Titanium but would be incompatible with whatever current ROM I'm using??

Just wondering how people are keeping track of their Titanium app backups across various ROMs??

THANKS!!

well what are you backing up with tb? i only backup the user apps. no system apps gets backed up. plus i always scroll through the user apps and see if anything in red which indicates system apps, i un-select them. as long as it is not a system app then they should work with other roms. i have like 160 some apps backed up with tb. i do not have any filing system. they work on all the roms i have flashed so far.

I have actually been backing up EVERYTHING for some reason. Though I have noticed the "legend" and color labeling of green/red for system apps and the white for user apps so I guess I can keep track of what would be "safe" to use with other ROMS. I have played around with uninstalling some system apps...either "bloatware" like NASCAR or Blockbuster...but also some "red/green" system apps that I was getting rid of. Granted I was removing some system stuff when I had "low memory" issue and now that is MOOT with my recent partitioning and a2sd...

But I was still thinking I might one day want to play around with a system app apk or install something "system-y" that was in one ROM but not another?? For example, before flashing Mik2.52 I froze and uninstalled the stock Internet browser because it kept popping up as an option to open HTML links (I know I could pick "default" for my Dolphin Browser but the links I was following in my K9 emails CONSTANTLY PROMPTED me to choose a browser EVEN IF I chose Dolphin as a default...but I digress...that is NOT the issue here).

So sure DOES make it simple to only be concerned about the user apps...but I have ALL my apps including system apps backed up to Titanium. Since you said what I quoted above with only caring about user apps, I'm revisiting the necessity of backing up and playing with what I have been doing....:confused:

I installed the htc drivers then extracted the revolutionary .zip, ran the exicutable and with the phone connected and in charge only mode it says "waiting for device" that "pre-freakout party" is goin on here too. Any Ideas?

I am also having the same problem. All firewalls are off, all anti virus are off, de-bugging enabled, followed all directions and still...... waiting for device _
Any ideas?

what about pda or doubletwist? what computer are you on? does your computer see your phone?

Yes, computer does see the phone, I had pda net but removed it before I tried this. I followed all directions as written.

Thank you for your input/response

what about htc sync and do you have the fastboot driver installed as well? well it could be some thing on your computer preventing the revolutionary program and some people have tried it on a different computer and it worked for them. also check your debugging while revolutionary is running, someone reported that it was turned off during the process even though it was turned on at the beginning.

Debugging on, no HTC sync. Fastboot driver? I have fastboot turned off on the phone. I dont know what you mean by fastboot driver.

yes it needs to be installed on your computer. it is the second step in the before rooting section of this guide.

Double face palm for me to.

I downloaded the fastboot but did not install.

You rock OCNBRZE. Thank you for all your help. You should be paid for all you do for everybody on this forum. I am now rooted and connected to my wifi tether with root access. Now to call sprint and cancel my wifi hotspot @ $30.00 a month.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU

nice!!!!!!!!!!
glad you are rooted. now go and get your flash on:D

also just be aware of what sprint has in mind for the mobile hotspot:Sprint reportedly capping its mobile hotspot plans October 2nd -- Engadget. looks like they are gonna be capping it which most likely means that they will be watching the usage of it more closely. just an fyi.

Ok. I flashed AmonRA now I have even more questions:
1) Where does Amon store the backups?
2) Can I now erase the backup made by CWM? I believe I read that Amon will not work with CWM backups.

I'm sure I'll have more but TIA.

1. it is in a folder called nandroid.
2.yes you can delete your cwm nandroids if you want. i would just back them up on your computer then delete them from the card.

also make sure that you make a nandroid backup if you have not done one yet. also make sure that you have at least one with wimax backed up.
