Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

1. it is in a folder called nandroid.
2.yes you can delete your cwm nandroids if you want. i would just back them up on your computer then delete them from the card.

also make sure that you make a nandroid backup if you have not done one yet. also make sure that you have at least one with wimax backed up.

Yes I made one when I flashed it. Thanks again. And again. Lol.

Hi...

So I read flashed Mik2.52 the other and read through the Guide here. I have a couple questions about Clockwork vs. Amon Ra recoveries...

I switched over to Amon Ra as recommended and read the Guide section about the suggested Amon Ra nandroid procedures. Prior to flashing Mik2.52 I had only ever used Clockwork and never knew the differences with Amon Ra.

With Clockwork, there were never any settings to change so I would nandroid backup and then restore with ZERO problems...all automatic...never a problem.

So, I read about and saw the different options for the Amon Ra nandroid which include backing up:

Boot
System Data
Cache Recovery
Wimax
sd-ext
.android_secure

The Guide suggests always backing up the first 3. Also, keep ONE nandroid with the Wimax keys backed up and back up sd-ext if the sd card is partitioned (which mine is).

QUESTIONS...

Why keep only ONE nandroid with the Wimax keys? If the keys are needed in the future, can I just extract them from this one nandroid? Forgive me but I know NOTHING about what I'm talking about and I dont' know if the following scenario could happen...I just want to run into the problem in the future where weeks or months from now I need the keys in this old nandroid...the only nandroid I have with the keys...and then I have to flash this old file to get the keys and revert allllll the way back to this old nandroid's data. I presume...and HOPE that this isn't the case...guess I'm wondering why only ONE nandroid is needed with the wimax backup??

Secondly, I got "spoiled" and liked the fact that I could use my Clockwork nandroid and restore RIGHT BACK to where I was without as much as a single setting that I needed to adjust. I wanted to ask/confirm if "only" backing up the "first three" options in Amon Ra plus my sd-ext will provide me with the SAME not-one-single-setting restore if necessary?? I can see why "cache" doesn't need to be backed up by want to know what the consequences are if I choose not to backup "Recovery" and ".android_secure" with my Amon Ra nandroids?

THANKS!!

1.the thing is when you make a nandroid backup adding wimax to it will make the nandroid very big in size. so it is not necessary to always backup wimax, but that is up to you. just make sure that you have at least one nandroid that has the keys.

2.yep that should do it for you. i have my card partitioned and when i nandroid restore back it is just as i left it. never had any issues.

So, with my scenario in my original post...if I need the keys from the one, single nandroid backup that has the keys and that nandroid is VERY old, can I extract JUST the keys or do I have to restore that old nandroid and all the other old information and revert my entire phone back to that old date??

Ok...good news with the second issue :)

I don't really know where to post this question so I'll just keep coming back here! LOL, in the Market Super User has an update. I'm reading some comments about it not working properly. Anyone update and was it working properly for them?

i never update my superuser app unless it comes with the rom. i do not see the need to update it.

I'm new to rooting.
1. What's the different between this and revoke.com or whatever? The site where you download the stuff straight off of their site?
2. So you can root Gingerbread now?

you need to check you hboot(bootloader) to see which method of rooting you need. so power off your phone, you may need to disable fastboot. go to settings/applications/and uncheck fastboot, now power off. press and hold power+vol down. this will get you to the hboot screen. at the top it will say what your hboot is.

if it your hboot is 2.10 or less then you need to use this guide:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies.html

if your hboot is 2.16 then you need to use this guide:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html

no i do not have s off i have tried many times, im confused what is going wrong. im following the instructions spot on.

i have you tried a factory reset of your phone? do you have the fastboot driver installed? and make sure that htc sync is un-installed as well as any anit-virus programs and firewalls. make sure that pda or doubletwist is un-installed as well.

So can I root my new Kindle Fire with revolutionary?

OK, OK, I know that the Kindle Fire isn't shipping until mid Nov. However, reports are saying it's based on GB, so I'm thinking I should be able to root it if the Amazon App store turns out to be a dud (i.e. overpriced & underperforming apps).

Does anyone here have any sense on whether the current revolutionary hack is likely to work on the Kindle Fire when it comes out?

take a look at the wiki:public:revolutionary [RootWiki]. there is a list of supported devices. not sure when and if revolution will happen to the new kindle or not.

Apparently Amazon has no plans to rotate the Fire's shield harmonics - should be rootable likety-split:

I was extremely nervous about rooting but I am def glad I did! Cheers to the developers! I was rooted and using a custom rom within 20 mins! couple of questions tho as I am new to this... is there an alternative to superwipe as it does not work with clockwork and I kind of like clockwork? also I think there is a newer version of clockwork, how do I update it? and finally when flashing from one custom rom to another is there any additional steps to take or just the norm wiping of data, dalvik cache, and cache? THANKS FOR THIS AWESOME WRITE UP/TUT!

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
if you rooted with revolutionary, you will get clockwork mod 5 something. that is the latest clockwork mod. however, with clockwork mod as you are finding out that some zip files can't be flashed with it. there are two scripts that is used on flashable zip files. they are amend and edify. most files are using amend and not many use edify so clockwork mod will be limited on what you can flash. there are 3 recoveries that is compatible with both scripts and they are clockwork mod 2.6, amon ra 2.3 and TWRP (by teamwin). so if you do like clockwork mod then you can switch to clockwork mod 2.6. all of your current nandroids will work with it.

however, i like amon ra 2.3. amon ra 2.3 is more stable and wipes better then clockwork mod. but that is up to you. and unfortunately you will have to downgrade clockwork mod if you want to use superwipe. it is not necessary to use superwipe, but it does a pretty good job at wiping things clean.

Hello...

Wanted to clarify a couple things you mentioned in your response...

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
if you rooted with revolutionary, you will get clockwork mod 5 something. that is the latest clockwork mod. however, with clockwork mod as you are finding out that some zip files can't be flashed with it. there are two scripts that is used on flashable zip files. they are amend and edify. most files are using amend and not many use edify so clockwork mod will be limited on what you can flash.

So if "most files" are using amend then the limitation is the fact that Clockwork uses edify, correct??

there are 3 recoveries that is compatible with both scripts and they are clockwork mod 2.6, amon ra 2.3 and TWRP (by teamwin). so if you do like clockwork mod then you can switch to clockwork mod 2.6. all of your current nandroids will work with it.
And to clarify this/state it another way...Clockwork 2.6 and Amon RA 2.3 will BOTH work with BOTH scripts (edify and amend)?? Does that mean that a nandroid backup created with Clockwork 2.6 can be restored by Amon RA 2.3 and vice versa...or am I understanding/presuming something incorrectly??

The reason I'm asking the latter question is because when I flashed Mik 2.52 a couple days ago with partitioning and pre-wipe using Amon RA as recommended (using Amon RA recovery for the first time) I could SWEAR that I was experimenting a bit while booted up in Amon RA recovery and tried to open an previous CLOCKWORK nandroid file and Amon RA would NOT READ the file. Thinking back, I THOUGHT I was on Clockwork 2.6 when I created the pre-Amon RA nandroids but it is LIKELY that I was on 2.5.x...which would explain why Amon RA would not read those nandroid (if I understand the "both script compatibility" issue correctly, right??
