Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

error msg SORRY!
the application Zysploit (process com.unrevoked zysploit) has stopped unexpectedly, please try again... Force close

i get this error on my phone useing the unrevoked method

OK, forget my last post. I figured that out. I may have screwed up. I was trying to swittch recoveries to amon ra 2.3 and completed the step by step instructions. I rebooted and when my phone started I had a phone that looked exactly like my old HTC wipped EVO before the root. Did I do something wrong? I already deleted the PC36IMG file via USB. Should I not have no that? I'd like to move on to the flashing step but I have no idea how to restart in recovery. Help!

Apologies for being a n00b

no when i go to recovery i get the red triangle and !.
ok so you have s-off that is good. hard part is done. all we need now is a recovery for you. so no need to run unrevoked again.

1.download this file:PC36IMG_RA_2.3.zip
2.rename the file by erasing the "_RA_2.3" part of the name so that it is only named PC36IMG. make sure not to add ".zip" to the name as windows hides extensions.
3.transfer the file to the root (that means not in any folder) of the sd card.
4.power off (you most likely need to uncheck fastboot. settings/apps/uncheck fastboot.) then press and hold power+vol down.
5.hboot should see the file and select yes to update.

now you have a recovery.

that is normal. go back into recovery and you should see at the bottom it should say amon ra 2.3. if so then you can go ahead and flash a rom.

Thanks SO much for this help. A couple of quick questions: how do I go back into recovery AND how do I effectively delete the bloatware (the main reason I rooted) found on my phone

you will need to turn off fastboot. settings/applications/uncheck fastboot. after that power off the press and hold power+vol down. this will get you to hboot. select recovery. and you are in.:)

Yeah that would sound better to do... Putting the rom first then the kernel as if did other way around, wouldn't have the right kernel in lone for setcpu... Still not 100% on going for it yet... May get it rooted then do a backup with titanium and go from there... But now I am on a Vista versus XP machine and I have heard of issues with using Vista to do this, but may just wait till I can get back to the xp machine... or maybe not... I want to do this so darn bad that I might just bite the bullet and go for it on Vista... just have to remember, from a video I saw, to run revolution with right click, run as admin... Will keep ya'll posted on how this goes....

just go for it. there will be plenty of people here who can help out if you get stuck. but doing research and asking questions is definitely a great way to start.

ocnbrze, you rock. Thanks for this guide and this help. I flashed Cyanogen and it looks sweet. Now I get to play with it all night :)

I am still wondering about the bloatware that is included with my EVO. I want to get rid of this crap. What is the best way to do this?

cm7 should have no bloatware included. not sure what you are talking about.

Thanks Ocn... You have been a great help to me so far on this. I would start on it right now, but I have some other things that need to be taken care of so once I get back.. It just might be time to start in on this 'project'
