Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

i always root just to get the free wifi teather
i dont get into all the other stuff lol .. thanks

i understand, but i guarantee you that you will like this rom. it is very fast and stable. it way better then stock. i mean waaaaaaaaaay better. but that is up to you. it also have given people better battery life with the stock kernel that it comes with. plus all the bloatware is removed.

wow gotta get use to the new rom it looks cool
and now i see the superuser

nice!!!!!!!!!!!
you should look into getting setcpu and a custom kernel. a custom kernel will help to give you better performance and better battery life out of your rom. and setcpu is an app in the market that is used to scale your cpu and you can over and underclock your phone.

okay, on android 2.2, i had rooted it using unrevokedforever, then i upgraded using the 2.3.4 OTA update from sprint, which took away my super user, and everything, but my s-off remaind well s-off.... so how in this world, considering i didnt flash any rrecovery images or i didnt back anything up, am i supposed to get my phone rooted again???

we need to know a couple of things. do you have s-off? what is your hboot?

also you should never accept an ota when you are rooted. it could do some things to your phone that is not good.
1.it could unroot you. and in most cases it will also close the previous exploit so that you can't root again and you will have to wait until the devs find another exploit. fortunately, this latest ota does not close the exploit so you most likely can reroot.
2.also the ota can actually brick your phone. i have seen it happen here on this forum when gingerbread first came out.
3.or it could put your phone in a weird state. where you have s-on but have a custom recovery.

Ocn, I forgot to ask this question yesterday, but after getting all rooted and what not, do you have to do the Update Profile and/or Update PRL? I know not to take a OTA update from what I have read and from what you posted above. But once I am on Mik3d, probably won't want to go back to anything else lol.

I think it's alright to update Profile and PRL. I've seen others mentioning doing it in posts about other Roms.
I'm sure someone will confirm this for you and especially if I'm wrong. I haven't updated anything yet and I've been Rooted for about a month.

Yes updating your profile and prl is just fine. See this post with some info about what that does.

Thanks Nick for the information. Now that I know that and hopefully have everything... I think it time to try this rooting out.... Of course if something happens that isn't right... will be back here to see if can get a solution to the problem..

You will be good bud, good luck and come on back if you have questions. ;)

Well... Have successfully got root and have put ra on... doing backup now.... Hopefully when backup is done... can get back into phone without the '!' showing up.... then it's time to get titanium and do a complete backup, then as you all say... time to get my flash on :-)

Edit: Didn't copy over PC36IMG_RA-2.3.zip so RA didn't get put on... Now can I copy that over, rename to pc36img.zip then let the thing run it? Or how does that work?

You are talking about getting your recovery right? If so yes, that's what you do.

Yeah, I got clockwork on there but wanted to put the one ocn was talking about, the amon? one is it called... So I just copy and rename that file, then go into hboot and let it do it's thing... then remove the file....

That is correct.

Good... Now got the correct recovery on there... re-did the recovery... now to do a titanium backup and then put mik3d on then put on golden monkey.... then get into setcpu.... so far so good... no glitches what so ever....

Edit: Can I now turn off the USB Debugging? as so far I haven't seen any mention of it except to to it on to run the revolution stuff to get root...

It should still be off and with each ROM, typically, that's the default setting.
