Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

It should still be off and with each ROM, typically, that's the default setting.

Ok, well in ocn's guide... 1st page of this thread, it was said to turn it on to do the root but I didn't see any mention of turning it off... so have shut it off now and have made a nandroid and titanium backup... now to try the rom then the kernel..... here is where I get nervous on all this... lol well at least hopefully can get back into hboot to get to the nandroid backup if something goes wrong...

No need to be nervous, there is absolutely no way, that I know of, to brick your phone by flashing a rom or kernel etc. As long as what you are flashing is for your phone.

EDIT: You can leave usb debugging checked. The rom you flash will most likely have it checked by default, you can just leave it checked.

Well it was checked for when I rooted the phone, but switched it back, not sure if it is on now or not in the rom I just got done putting on (Mik3d) So far this is very nice... now to do another nandroid then to put golden monkey on and setcpu in... then to restore the apps I had on the phone..

Edit: Now to find out how to get the 'carousel' part going... have seen it somewhwere but not sure if there is a setting or something I missed or have not found yet...

Edit: Now to go looking to see how to get the 'carousel' going on here... gotta be a setting somewhere I have yet to find...

But so far this is sweet.... a 'new' phone fer nuttin except some time....

I think the carousel is automatic. Just swipe your home screens real fast. However I haven't flased mik 3d, so I'm not 100% sure it's in there but it should be.

LOL yes it is... I thought it cam up when you hit home or something but it does when you swipe it fast... this is way to neat... well just to say this... I got the Flash bug now thanks to you all..;)

It's just the beginning my friend, just the beginning. :p

Hehe.. Yes it is... Now when I tried to put titanium back on, it installed, but says not rooted (I am as I have Mik3D on it) and something about busybox not installed... So searched market, put busybox on... now rebooting to see if it works now... if not, will do the wipe trick to see if that works...

Edit: Reboot seems to have done the trick... Now to install a couple of apps before going onward

Hi. I'm trying to root my EVO and every time I try to access revolutionary site it won't load... Can anyone help me get the beta key to enter in the recovery tool? Thanks

Aright so when I'm ready to make the switch over to amon ra, alls i have to do is flash the zip right over clockwork? are there any steps that I should take prior? Thanks for all your help ocnbrze. This is slowly becoming my new addiction..

Hi
I switched recoveries to amon ra 2.3 did a nandroid backup (at least I think I did). Now where is the backup so i can back it up to my computer?
When I am in recovery, on the bottom of the screen is RA-supersonic-v2.3.
Is that Amon ? or did I screw something up.

Thanks
Jo Ann

yep that is amon ra 2.3. you are good. the nandroid backups are found in the folder nandroid. they are named by date. you could rename the nandroid backup if you want just do not use spaces and weird symbols.

did you make a nandroid backup? try connecting it to the computer and find the folder that way. it should be there if you made a nandroid backup.

So Ived tried searching for something related to this with the EVO and the revolutionary tool and skimmed through most of all the pages in this thread and havent really found an answer to where Im stuck at..

HTC Sync not installed, uninstalled all HTC Drivers and installed the instructed driver. Charge Only. Debugging mode. Antivirus disabled. Phone wiped prior to steps, SD card clean with just SU file on root directory...

try running revolutionary again. sometimes it might take a few tries. also check to see if you have s-off or not by going to the hboot screen.

we need to know a couple of things. do you have s-off? what is your hboot?

also you should never accept an ota when you are rooted. it could do some things to your phone that is not good.
1.it could unroot you. and in most cases it will also close the previous exploit so that you can't root again and you will have to wait until the devs find another exploit. fortunately, this latest ota does not close the exploit so you most likely can reroot.
2.also the ota can actually brick your phone. i have seen it happen here on this forum when gingerbread first came out.
3.or it could put your phone in a weird state. where you have s-on but have a custom recovery.

Uhmmm , yes my s is off... my hboot is hboot version 2.16.0001

see you are in a weird state. your hboot is not where it should be and you have s-off. so do you have a custom recovery? go to the hboot screen, select recovery. what do you get when you try that?

Hello all...

Don't know if anyone has (cared to :D) follow my posts and problems with my EVO and the camera app with the MikG ROM. I went from rooted stock Gingerbread 2.3.3 ROM to MikG 2.5.X. Everything was working fine for a few days then my camera app (and camcorder) stopped working...would freeze, no shutter release, no focus, no zoom...and it would peg my CPU at 100% and drain the battery in no time at all.

I looked at this forum, XDA and themikmik forum and there was a suggestion that there were problems with EVOs running hardware v0001 or v0002 and the camera app with MikG ROMs. The suggestion was that the camera app "did not like" working in a perhaps "undervolted" environment and that changing the kernel would help.

Well, not sure what other kernels might work but I flashed the Freedom v0.9 Kernel and my camera and camcorder apps were instantly up and running!!

[Kernel][Sense][HDMwIn]Evo 4g Freedom-v0.9 Kernel GB MR 2.6.35.10 - xda-developers

I flashed the universal file of the plain old "Freedom" option...not sure if "More Freedom," "Less Freedom," or "Aggressive Freedom" options will work..I have a feeling they vary/control the voltage in different ways that might cause problems...but feel free to try!!

So, I AM definitely happy with this result...hope I helped someone else if they needed!! :)

try running revolutionary again. sometimes it might take a few tries. also check to see if you have s-off or not by going to the hboot screen.

Sadly, tried a few times, same problem everytime. Hboot shows S-ON still...

Tried restarting computer with reinstalling and installing HTC drivers again, as well as restarting phone.

Attempted to try and update the recovery through Hboot, but it wouldnt recognize the PC36IMG file. Searched on the subject and tried all solutions with no luck. I believe the problem with that lies back here, so Im back to square one on trying to figure this out. :(

Even tried another set of instructions to run with Fastboot checked and running the Revolutionary file as Admin.

I checked to disable my AVG antivirus everytime, tho using the temporary mode they have available.

Im open to new suggestions please :)

Thanks

i do not know how accurate this post is but i found this over at xda:
xda-developers - View Single Post - EVO 4G GB Update has root!!!!

but i would do the same and head on over to the revolutionary irc and post the same question to them.

Hey all, I need you guys to talk to me like I'm 5 yrs old....seriously, just a guy sick of bloatware thinking of rooting my phone. Terms like NAND and Flashing are beyond me.

What risks do I run of bricking my phone by simply following this guide step-by-step?

Thanks!

it is pretty hard to brick your phone. just read the guide thoroughly first before trying. i really doubt that trying to root will brick it. it is what you do afterwards that it is more of a possibility.
