Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

it is pretty hard to brick your phone. just read the guide thoroughly first before trying. i really doubt that trying to root will brick it. it is what you do afterwards that it is more of a possibility.

Can I get ya to go a little more into detail about what after-activities are hazardous to my wallet?

Can I get ya to go a little more into detail about what after-activities are hazardous to my wallet?

what i have found is that people who are not careful and do not read everything first before doing something to your phone. main areas are when trying to unroot your phone and using the wrong files for it. flashing the wrong roms that were meant for other phones. pulling the battery out while updating your radios. really the main thing is to just be careful read or do some research like you are doing now, and you should be ok. rooting and flashing roms and such is really easy to do. when in doubt just come here and we help answer any questions you have.

Hey all, I need you guys to talk to me like I'm 5 yrs old....seriously, just a guy sick of bloatware thinking of rooting my phone. Terms like NAND and Flashing are beyond me.

What risks do I run of bricking my phone by simply following this guide step-by-step?

Thanks!

Actually, I heard that ocnbrze will PERSONALLY GUARANTEE any losses and buy you a new phone of your choosing should you have any problems!! :D:D;)

HONESTLY, most important to READ AND READ and to ASK QUESTIONS and TAKE IT SLOW. There is always a chance or running into problems and every once in a while you'll follow instructions to a T only to have a little hiccup. But if you post your progress and any problems you might have along the way, someone here should be able to walk you through.

Good luck...you won't need it...but you'll be glad when you're rooted, trust me!! :D

9. select the first three and wimax. the other partitions do not need to be backed up. always keep one nandroid backup with wimax keys backed up on your computer.

So I'm doing the Amon ra thing.....How do you put a backup on your computer like it asks you to here?

a number of ways, in recovery, select usb ms toggle and then power button with ur phone hooked to pc with usb cable. It will pop up like a drive that you can navigate and copy and paste and stuff.

The backup will be in your nandroid folder on your sd card.

You can just hook up cable to pc and click on disk drive, instead of charging only.

Or, take card out and put it an adapter then a card reader attached to ur pc.

I got this far twice.....

After that it told me it couldn't communicate with the phone... I rebooted and it updated PRL etc. Also does the vol down + power button thing not work anymore like it did on evo4g?

Hmmm tried to make a call now, and it is some guy telling me error #16 And something about an authentication code...

I am reading the thread for a solution...

I have debugging on and I do not have HTC Sync installed nor do I have PDAnet (at least neither come up in a search).

When it dissconnects me it leaves my phone on the white screen with the following....

-Revolutionary-
shooter xc ship S-OFF RL
hboot 1.40.1100
radio 0.97.00.0518
emmc-boot
-gives the date here

fastboot usb
bootloader
reboot
reboot bootloader
power down

It has not asked me anything about Clockwork Recovery Mod

OK, have an honest-to-goodness question now. I am using Titanium free. I made a backup, then flashed mik2.55. I also made a NAND backup.

Every time I try to open my people/contacts, it force closes. Also, I was hoping to be able to restore all my home screen layouts, etc....is that possible? The message is com.android.htccontacts is having issues blah blah

Thanks!

Scratch that, I thought I'd just restart it and that might work. Now the phone doesn't work at all!!

Multiple force close windows pop up, phone basically useless.

What I did was essentially start over....all the stuff was still on my card, so I just went into recovery and re-did the entire flashing process.

It seems to be working now, but if it happens again I'll try wiping those.

Thanks!

yeah anytime you get errors or fc's or find glitches. always try to wipe dalvik cache and cache first. it usually fixes most issues that you run across.

glad you figured it out though.

Think I found the culprit, not sure what to do about it.

Everything is fine until I download a new copy of titanium, find the backup on the card, and try to restore. I'm selecting restore all data+apps.

Titanium finishes, then I reboot, then all hell breaks loose.

when you restore your apps +data, scroll down and anything in red make sure you uncheck it. those are system apps and the data (which contains data from your previous rom) associated with those apps will create issues with your new rom.

Looks like you have s-off, so that's all that matters. You need to flash a custom recovery probably.

See here for directions to get your recovery.

EDIT: Wait a second...Looks like you have the 3d? If that's the case you will need TWRP for your recovery. Can you get to recovery?

If you mean the vol down + power.... no. I can only get to that screen if I run revolutionary. It then says it loses communication (or something) with the phone and I get the options I listed above...to go into bootloader etc etc.

Also txt msgs do not work.

I restarted my phone and as it stands I can use the internet, mail etc but I can't make phone calls.

While I would like to get the custom ROM going I definitely need to get back my ability to make calls and send txt I am at home with my 2 year old son so phone calls are kinda important. *lol*

Should I go and install that update?

Did that, same issue. Here's today's question.

I have Mik up and running how I want it, have apps installed, google and FB synced all that good stuff. All I really want is my contacts restored. If I restore, all hell breaks loose.

So, If I make a Nand BEFORE I try to restore my contcts, when it goes haywire I can just restore the nand and try again without starting completely over, right???

Is there a better/easier/smarter way to go about this?
Thanks

why are you trying to restore your contacts via tb? once you sync with google all of your contacts will be synced to your phone.

also you are correct with the use of nandroid backups.

I had the phone #'s on the phone, and a lot of them I just had phone#'s only so they weren't synced with anything.

I don't know why it's such a pain, either...hoping you guys did!!

All of my email/FB did automatically re-appear when I re-synced just like you're talking about.

Can I somehow get in that file manually, or open on my computer or something and see the numbers and enter them manually?

......Or again, is there a smarter/easier/non-noob way to do that?

well the issue you are having is that your phone contacts are not synced with google and when you used tb it saved the contacts as part of the system data. and system data will always have bits and pieces of the previous rom which may or may not cause a conflict with the existing rom.

if you have a nandroid backup of your previous rom with no issues maybe try another app called: MyBackup Pro. it will have the ability to backup and restore your contacts.
