Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

Speaking of Kernels, this might be off-topic, but anyone want to chime in on a favorite for running w/ Mik2.55? Primarily I want battery life & stability.

Thanks!

kernels will vary from phone to phone. so what works for you may not work for me. but my phone likes the aggressive freedom kernel better then others. just make a nandroid backup and try one. also give it a day or two to settle down before moving on.

I looked at the Freedom Kernels...there's 3 of each one....like a synnightly, syn god-mode, and universal....confused on which one to use?

1.what about the HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe driver. do you have this one installed? yes.

2.also just to make sure but do you have usb debugging on? yes.

3.what about another computer. for some reason some have switched to a different computer and it worked. have not tried this.

4.does your computer see your phone? can you get access to the card via your computer?
you mean in device manager?

Thanks

you mean in device manager?

Thanks

there are two drivers some talk about that have an effect on the rooting process. you need the driver i posted above. it is the fastboot driver and cam also be found on the revolutionary website. so yes download that and install onto your computer. you do not need device manager for that driver.

the other driver is associated with htc sync which is completely different. sometimes the additional driver may help with revolutionary. but i would suggest trying without it it first. and htc sync can interfere with revolutionary as well.

I have an EVO and it runs Froyo and I rooted it with UnRevoked and used your rooting for dummies guide. I was wondering , if i want to upgrade to Gingerbread, why dont i just put the phone back to the UN-rooted version of the phone download the update from sprint/google? Then after it is installed (Gingerbread that is), why dont I use the new Revolutionary program to re-root the phone after turning the rasio off?

What am i missing here? Is there anything that prevents this? What does it do if i do this? Help me out here.

Thanks.

Pardon my noob-ness, but it seems easier just to flash a 2.3.3 ROM??

This is of course based on my grand total of 48 hours or so of experience:eek:

huge noob is correct. it is a lof easier to just flash a rom that has the ota built in. never accept an ota when you are rooted. it could 1. brick your phone. 2.it could unroot you. and in most cases when you accept an ota it will close any previous exploit. you will most likely have to wait for the devs to find a new exploit. fortunately we now have revolutionary to use, but if you ever move on to a different phone and you want to root it, all of this will apply.

I used MikG v2.55 and I could not get any app on the phone to work with any stability. the market app, gmail, netflix, etc.

What is the recommendation?

I wipped the phone just as MikG described on his yotube video and flashed the rom. What am i missing or do i just need to try again?

Well what do you mean with any stability? Everything works great for me.

What EXACTLY did you do when flashing? What recovery? What items did you wipe? Did you restore anything with titanium backup? Flash any other mods/themes/etc?

I cleared the phone completely, i cleaned the cache's, the sd card and flshed from the sd card in recovery mode, i did these things 3 times. I didnt use any titanium restore or flash any other mods/themes/etc, only the MikG v2.55.

After completing the flash and rebooting the phone, immediately i get unstable messages for gmail, netflix, market, etc and have to shut them down (force close).

Any ideas?

Also any ideas on changing from clockwork? Titanium? Amon RA? Which of these work best and why? It appears to me Amon has alot more features than clockwork? do i still need titanium and amon?

BTW Thanks for your help!!!:)

Ok...Are you using amon ra as your recovery?

What EXACTLY, I mean exact things you are wiping, because it doesn't sound like you are wiping everything you need to.

Titanium is completely different than amon ra and CWM, it's used to mainly backup your apps and uninstall/freeze apps you don't want running.

And you're welcome.

I used the directions from this site on flashing, i did a factory reset, i reformatted the sd card, i went into recovery and cleared the dalvik cache, the cache and data (i did this several time to make sure it was clean.
I then followed the directions on MikMik site (link below) and flashed his v2.55 in recovery mode.
How to Flash a ROM on the HTC Evo 4G.flv - YouTube

I then rebooted the phone and immediately upon start up i received unstable messages for gmail, market and netflix. I tried again the sam process described above and re-flashed MikG v2.55 and got the same instability issues with gmail, market, etc.

What do you think? Is there a step by step breakdown of how to do this, so i make sure i don't miss anything?

Thanks again, you guys are great and your knowledge is amazing!

Yup just follow this link to flash. You need to make sure you are wiping system and boot as well in Amon RA. I've never watched that video.

I guess I still don't understand what you mean by "unstable" messages. Was that an actual error that showed up?

You don't necessarily have to format your sd card, but it's always good to start fresh.

You might move your questions over to themikmik in one of the threads there so we don't clutter OC's rooting thread with flashing mikroms. ;)

I insisted I wasn't going to root, but then they rolled out a bunch of updates for the bloatware apps and they were clogging up my market view.

Rooted quick and easy with this guide and they are all gone now. :p

thanks to everyone involved in this guide!

NICE!!!!!!! now get your flash on:D

NICE!!!!!!! now get your flash on:D

Ocnbrz. Just want to say thanks. The most interesting that caught my eye was that some users were having problems with different computers....well that was my number one problem. I was using an old slow 2003 windows vista os computer.

Kastleback. What you said about using the s/n on back of the battery also was an issue as I did the same thing. It was confusing to me about the s/n. Use the s/n on the back of the phone as instructions state.

In any event once I went to my new laptop using windows 7 and used the s/n on the back of the phone, went on revolutionary .0.4, right click on the drop down menu and pasted the beta key, shit it took off!!!!! Next, my donation on the way. Flashing a rom...thats the easy part.

One thing is that I found easy, is to access your data on your sd card from your phone and transfer it to a folder on your computer and cut and copy all files to a new folder, then factory reset and erase data.

This way you can transfer files back on your phone. Just take in account not to transfer back files that are already there after rooting.

Thank You

So my phone is reset to factory, then updated to Gingerbread. I followed all the steps to get the phone ready (put zip file on sd card). Uninstalled/turned off securities on PC.

When I run the revolutionary file it starts a dos window and gives me the message: Waiting for device...

thats it. I can't enter anything in the window.

Is there something else I can try? The phone is conected to usb with charge only on.

Please help.

I'm aware of the difference between the syn and non-syn kernel...but what about the "More/Less/Agressive" Freedoms?? Is that all CPU clocking??

Hiya...

Was previously having problems with my Superuser app v2.3.6.3 force closing which was fixed by downloading and installing v3.0.2 from the Market. I see v3.0.4 is out and there are some reported issues with THAT version force closing as well.

Here's my question: how does one detach the Superuser app from the Market update prompts?? I don't to be prompted to install an update to the Superuser app because I'm nice and stable on 3.0.2. BIG problem is that if I am prompted with more than one Market update I cannot hit "Update All" because the Superuser update is in that queue as well!!

I have detached certain apps that I don't want updating using the detach feature with Titanium but the Superuser app does not appear in Titanium for me to able to do that!!

So, is there any way to detach the Superuser app from Market updates?? Interestingly, when I was using Superuser v2.3.6.3 for the longest time (before my force close issues) I was NEVER prompted to update Superuser in the Market. Now, after downloading v3.0.2 from the Market to fix my force close issues, it appears that my Superuser app is not associated with Market update prompts :( Hmmm.....:confused:

THANKS!!

i'm not sure why people are having su issues all of a sudden. i never mess with that app at all. i have never had a prompt to update. the only thing that i can think of is wipe dalvik cache and cache and re-flash the rom. this will reset system apps to where they should be. it should revert your superuser app back to the previous version.
