Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

i'm not sure why people are having su issues all of a sudden. i never mess with that app at all. i have never had a prompt to update. the only thing that i can think of is wipe dalvik cache and cache and re-flash the rom. this will reset system apps to where they should be. it should revert your superuser app back to the previous version.

No, no...sorry if I wasn't clear! :( I am NOT having Superuser issues anymore...upped from v2.3.6.3 (where my force closing started ALL BY ITSELF without any attempt to update the app) to a STABLE v.3.0.2.

My problem NOW is that since I updated to the stable version, it is now "attached" to the Market and I'm prompted to update, which I do NOT want to do. I was wondering how to DETACH it from the Market because I cannot do so for some reason using Titanium...the Superuser app does not appear in the list of apps...:confused:

What version of Superuser are you using? Go to Home

3.70
so far i just did a factory reset phone and wipped sd card
and catch files and did a reset in recovery

Not quite sure where you're at. That "3.70" number doesn't have anything to do with Superuser. You needed to be at your home page and follow the info I gave to find the Superuser version number. From your Home page:

Hello,

Newbie here & technology challenged.

I am trying to Root & I am at the Revolutionary stage.
When I run the revolutionary file, I am getting the error: Caroline failed, but had this to say: An error occurred while writing the partition.

Can someone help me past this point?

Thanks

If you don't disable script blocking, prior to downloading software, in step: "(4) On to Rooting your EVO", you wont see the pop-up window that generates your serial for pasting, FYI. This is a simple note for Firefox and NoScript Users; others would be java related blockers, I believe. Peace out.

Wanted to share a few interesting links discussing the Superuser force close issues many are dealing with. One link from themikmik forums (for Mik ROMs but the Superuser issue is affecting other ROMs as well) and the second link is information from the Superuser app info page. Be sure to read the comments below the initial information at the second link:

Superuser App Force Closing??

Superuser

I also posted a version of the Superuser apk that was stable for me at the link below. Feel free to download and install this apk to see if it fixes your problems. Can't make promises and might not work for everyone but worked for me. My Superuser v2.3.6.3 was force closing and I updated it to v.3.0.2 and have STAYED WITH THAT VERSION because of recent problems. Here's the link to the post with the file attachment:

Hey, ocnbrze...

Interesting comment I found about the ability to update the Superuser app in the Market from the following link:

Superuser

It states:

Superuser comes pre-installed on any rooted ROM. In fact, without it, you don

Being new to the Root world I read this thread and at the beginning it says this under flashing.

Flashing

this is all good, but how do i flash a rom or kernel?

good point so here is what you do:
1.first you need the vr superwipe: ZZZVR_SUPERWIPE.zip. download it and put it on your card. (optional)*
2.download the rom of your choice and transfer it to your card.
3.go into recovery
4.make a nandroid backup
5.wipe dalvik cache, cache, and data
6.select install (or flash depending on which recovery you have) zip from sdcard
7.find the superwipe file and flash it.(optional)
8.find your rom and flash it.
9.reboot.

first boot will take a bit longer then normal, so be patient. now as far as kernels go the steps are the same except that all you need to do is only wipe dalvik cache and cache. there is no need to wipe data. also there is no need to flash the superwipe when flashing kernels.

*the vr superwipe is an optional step, but i would recommend that you use it. it wipes system, cache, and boot. it wipes those three times. then it wipes the temp files and does that three times. i would not only use this tool to wipe. it should be done in addition to wiping data, dalvik cache and cache. one last thing about superwipe, this will only work with those that have support for amend scripting. only clockwork mod 2.6, amon ra 2.3, and trwp will work. so if you have clockwrok mod 3 and higher you might want to switch recoveries.
I rooted recently and flashed Mik's Supersonic 3D w/3.5 sense. I wanted to try a new Kernel but, following the above directions, it always hung up and I could only do the power/volume down thing and restore the nandroid I'd created before I started.

Then, after doing some more reading, I saw that to flash a Kernel you just wipe Dalvik Cache and Cache and not data. I did that and when I didn't wipe data it now works and I can easily flash a new Kernel. Don't know if this applies to everybody's phones but it might be something to look at in the original instructions quoted above.

ok it is in there but i will make it more noticeably different so as not to confuse people. thanx for the heads up.

I just wanted to say thank you ocnbrze, for this tutorial. I got the evo last march and finally decided to root it. This guide worked perfectly. Now, I just feel a little overwhelmed with all that is out there. I can't believe I have been missing out on this.

its literally an understatement when i shout how amazing you are for making this guide. It made it cake work for an android lover/power user. Thanks to all that put their blood/sweat/time into doing this stuff for all of us that just want more!!

I'm ready to root my EVO4G gingerbread for the first time.

Question: Is there an appreciable difference between using the Revolutionary method describe here and the method on UNREVOkED?

yes there is a difference. the main difference is your hboot. power off your phone then press and hold power+vol down. this will take you to the hboot screen. at the top will tell you what your hboot is.

if your hboot is 2.15 or 2.16 then you want to use this guide:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html which uses revolutionary.

and if your hboot is 2.10 or less then you want to use this guide:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies.html which uses unrevoked.

Thanks much. My Hboot=2.16 so I can't use UNREVOKED?
