Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

nice, we are here for you, if you need any more help. now go and get your root on.:D

:D YOu have no idea how much it helps to have you and the other gurus here and willing to help. I admit I'm a little nervous but have been reading everything here so no time like the present. I'm doing a factory reset right now....

I am on this step:
"download this and put this file, superuser su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip on the root(not in any folder) of your card via usb cable."

I have my evo connected via USN and mounted as a disk drive (correct?).
Question: how do I direct the superuser file to the root of my sd card?

did you mean usb? and yes mount as disk drive. a window should pop up on your computer with the contents of your card. just drag or copy and paste the file into the card.

Okay thanks, I got the file onto my card.

Now trying to open Revolutionary and getting error message:

"applicatoin has failed to start because AdbWinApi.dll is not present" though I can see it in the download folder. ??

you need to extract the folder onto your desktop somewhere. and then run the revolutionary.

do you have usb debugging on? also make sure that pda or doublwtwist is not installed. also make sure that htc sync is uninstalled as well.

USB debugging on, did a factory reset so no pda or doubletwist, never had htc sync installed on this computer. Wonder what kind of n00btastic user error I'm committing this time?

it is actually a common issue with revolutionary. what about anitvirus is that off as well? does your computer see your phone? also maybe try it on a different computer.

Problem solved. I don't know if it is the cause for others that experience the ""waiting for device" message" but for me it was caused by not having opened and run the HTC drivers.

Holy crap I'm rooted! Thanks Ocnbrze and all who contribute here!

What do I do next?

I'm looking at the Root for Dummies guide and see Recoveries, Nandroids, Roms, Kernels and Themes.
Is there a particular order in which I should attempt to complete these?
This stuff is fun.

First thing you do is make a nandroid of you current setup then make a nandroid of ONLY your wimax keys and save that somewhere safe. Then flash a custom rom and have fun. :D

I'm newly rooted myself...using clockwork I made a backup of current but how do i backup just Wimax keys? Don't see option ..once I click back up the first time phone did everthing on its own.

Why do I notice others with older versions of clockwork I'm on 5.0.2.2 ? I have EVO 4g..do different older versions work better?

Last ? In clockwork menu gives option to flash amon ra I read, hear its better but for a beginner like myself which would b better? And if I do flash amon do u backup again? Guessing clockwork back up won't work ..

Thanks for all your help.

you are correct in that once you switch your clockwork mod nandroid backup will not work on amon ra. so once you switch you should do another nandroid backup with amon ra.

IMHO amon ra 2.3 is a much better recovery then clockwork mod. you can read about recoveries and how to switch them in the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html.

Ok I read the switch recoveries also backing up Wimax is on recovery menu ... Is it the same as flashing it from clockwork menu? Has that option.

Once i flash it, since I have clockwork should I uninstall and erase back up i made then go ahead and make amon backup

Thanks again

with clockwork mod it automatically backs up wimax. in amon ra you have to manually do it.

no need to unistall clockwork mod. it will just get replaced by amon ra, when you switch recoveries. i would keep the clockwork mod nandroid backup saved on your computer just in case something happens.

Not following you here. Is what the same as flashing from clockwork? Create a backup with amon ra with just the top three things selected. Then once it's done create a back up with just wimax selected.

No need to uninstall clock work, but you can uninstall rom manager if you have it and delete your backups you made with clockwork or just move it to your computer for a backup...just in case.

And you're welcome. ;)

EDIT: LOL...OC beat me, looks like we said the same basic thing. :D

do you mean rom manager? i never new there was an option in clockwork mod. i would suggest the method found in the guide. that info can be very helpful later on down the line.

Alright, so I'm going to ask one more time. Is there anything else I can do to root this damn phone? Am I missing something, not running something? I did a factory reset first, no dice. So I then ran the RUU, again, all I get is "Zerging root...........".

I don't have access to another computer so....... but what I can't figure out is why in the **** can I run the RUU and still this revolutionary, unrevoked..... still will NOT do its thing.:(

Until further notice,

end rant

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, but I believe I may be shit out of luck.

yeah not sure what your issue is. have you tried to chat with the folks on the revolutionary team through their irc channel?

one thought, not sure you will like it....but maybe wipe your computer clean and start over. it could be something on your computer preventing it from going through. told you would not like it.
