Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

yeah not sure what your issue is. have you tried to chat with the folks on the revolutionary team through their irc channel?

one thought, not sure you will like it....but maybe wipe your computer clean and start over. it could be something on your computer preventing it from going through. told you would not like it.

Yeah, I'm not wiping the computer. Just cannot figure out what's going on. It's like there's something interfering with revolutionary. But i had the same issue with 2.2 and unrevoked. Never worked for me, used Auto-Root, boom I was rooted in 10 minutes

Not really interested in the irc so........ I'll see if I can find a computer somewhere. It's my last hope:p:p:p:p

First off thanks for the guide. Obviously I'm a newb at this. I did the revolution thing and got all the way to installing the superuser zip from my sd card. At that point it says: "installing:/sdcard/su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip.zip
finding update package.....
opening update package.....
installing update.....
installation aborted.

What did I forget/ do wrong?

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!
it could be a bad download. try re-downloading it and try again.

Success finally:D

Found some htc drivers that I didn't know were on the computer, deleted those, plugged the phone in and I was rooted in 5 minutes.

Wow, what a pain but all is good now, phone rooted, sd card partitioned, loaded up MikG for her and she likes it. So glad that's done.

You were absolutlely right. Deleted old downloads, then put one zipped and one unzipped on my sd card. Worked like a charm. Seeing that Success! at the end felt like winning the Superbowl LOL! Thanks again. Now all I have to do is figure out what kind of cool things I wanna do with the phone. I'm sure I'll have questions so don't go anywhere.

Thanks for this thread ocn! It worked great, and my phone is rooted now.

Just one problem though. Since I rooted the phone I can't make or receive phone calls. 3G, 4G and sms all still seem to work. When I place a call, it acts as if it is dialing and the call time counter starts, but the call ends by itself after 5 seconds. When I try to call myself from another phone it goes straight to voicemail after a ring or two even though the phone is on. The phone never rings or receives the call, but it does download any voicemails that are left.

I've made a thread about the issue here if anyone has any suggestions or can help. I really appreciate it guys, I know I'm close to being done with this process, but I need to get this fixed! :(

UPDATE: The problem seems to have fixed itself. Maybe it was actually a problem with Sprint's network that just happened to coincide with when I was rooting my phone? Strange coincidence, but possible.

I just kept trying to place a call over and over, and then eventually a call went through. I found that if I kept trying to call a number over and over eventually it would connect, then in a matter of minutes it went back to working every time like it should.

Cheers!

glad it worked for you. now go and get your flash on/:D

do you mean rom manager? i never new there was an option in clockwork mod. i would suggest the method found in the guide. that info can be very helpful later on down the line.

got amon ra installed..2 questions

- it saved the backup in sd as nandroid - do i save the entire file or just the important stuff which is in the 3rd sub file? guessing it doesnt matter.
- i want to partition my card now - do i need to flash a rom first? cause this got me a lil baffled xda-developers - View Single Post - [GUIDE][07/07/11]How to Partition your SD Card and xda-developers - View Single Post - [GUIDE][07/07/11]How to Partition your SD Card

im using app2sd from market is that the same. the 4 4 question in the thread got me also...cant perform a nandroid restore if partitioning card is what hes saying

1.backup the entire folder on to your computer for safe keeping.

2.if you want to partition your card, i would do that before flashing a rom. but, you need to have the rom file downloaded on to your computer ready to be transferred over to the card.

3.no the apps2sd is completely different.

the best thing to do is read the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html. it has a section on how to partition your card. it also goes into the difference between a2sd and apps2sd.

hope that helps. any questions please feel free to ask.

@ ocnbrze

Forgive me if you've posted this on the first page but I don't know if you want to modify your rooting guide for going straight to amon ra v2.3 instead of using clockworkmod since most of us agree that amon ra is the better recovery.

When I rooted my wife's phone the other day, I knew I didn't want to use clockworkmod as the recovery so when I downloaded the su file, I also downloaded the bootloader version for amon ra. So when I went to the bootloader, it automatically updated my recovery to Amon ra V2.3.

Instead of selecting yes, I selected no.

Maybe make a separate area for clockworkmod and amon ra.

Just a thought and I'm sure this is in the thread somewhere but it could be on the first page:)

thanx for the suggestion, but i do have a section on switching recoveries. i think that if i put that in the rooting section that i would need to explain the reasoning behind doing it which i think would ruin the flow of the guide. i would rather have the reader make his/her own decision to switch recoveries.

Hi, I hope you can please help.
When running Revolutionary, I get.....

=============================================
| Revolutionary S-OFF & Recovery Tool 0.4pre4 |
=============================================
Brought to you by AlphaRev & unrEVOked.

Waiting for device...
Found your device: PC36100 (supersonic-2.10.0001, Android: 2.2, ROM version: 3.7
0.651.1)

Your device: supersonic, with HBOOT 2.10.0001 is not supported at this time.
Press (almost) any key to exit.

I was rooted in 2.2 and reset the phone but now I am stuck because it is saying HBOOT 2.10 is not supported. What do I do to get around this?
Please help. Thank you

yeah you need to use unrevoked to root your phone. use this guide:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies.html

Thank you very much.
I just want to clarify.

When starting the phone power and volume down, my phone is saying S-OFF (security is off) probably from rooting originally with UNREVOKED 3?

So to get up to 2.3 Gingerbread, just use the link you provided?

no to get updated on a rooted phone all you need to do is flash a gingerbread rom. no need to unroot. try mikg2.57. it a gingerbread rom that has sense 2.1 and sense 3.0 built in. you can get it in the roms/kernel sticky.

Sorry to be such a noob :-)

I downloaded the file and placed it in root of the sd card.
Applied from sd card.
Is that all there is to it?
Should I be looking for anything else to verify?
Clockwork 2.6 seems to be there.
Any suggestions download or otherwise so it goes smoothly

Thanks again

1.download the file and place it on the card. not in any folders
2.next you need to make a nandroid backup so go into recovery and select backup and restore and select backup
3.wipe dalvik cache(advanced), cache partitions, and wipe data/factory reset
4.select install zip from sdcard
5.find the file and select it.
6.after it flashes then reboot

now you have an updated rom.:D
