Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

Thank you, thank you, it worked. Currently restoring from Titanium backup. I did not know that you could flash Gingerbread from Froyo if you were already rooted, I unrooted my phone, took the OTA update and then rooted back. N00bness is a bad thing...:D

nice! congrats on the re-root:D

yeah you should never accept an ota while you are rooted. and that goes for any rooted phone, not just the evo. anyways at least you know now.

now go and get your flash on:D

I am very appreciative of all your work. I just followed you guide after trying many other ways. My EVO 4g is now un-rooted, but only long enough to return to sprint to have damages repaired.. Then back to the Root and ROM world.

Thanks again, Cook

interesting that you have 2.16 as your hboot.
what instructions did you use? is it from this guide? in when you try to get s-on, what happens in hboot? does it ask you to update?

I used the guide in the rooting for dummies guide. I followed the rooting and unrooting guide in that sticky, each time that I run the hboot it asks to update, the first one in the "to get S-ON" runs and updates pretty quick, the send one in the "next we need to get a stock rom and stock recovery" it takes a little while longer, 10 minutes at the most. When I go back to hboot to check though it still says S-OFF.

All the root apps are gone (superuser, and backup titanium) and all the bloatware is back (sprint tv, ect.)

edit: Forgive me if this is border line stupid. Does it matter if the phone is activated or not? Since I upgraded to the new phone, this phone has no service. Just wondering what could be the issue in the un-root process.

I don't think it should matter in the unroot stage because the phones not even on to unroot.

Maybe redownload the s-on tool, maybe you got a bad download. Once you redownload check the md5 to make sure it's ok. Here's where you can get MD5 program to check it and here's the md5 I got on it. Make sure they match. 55a283c69687befd9dbd3fef26e1ad87 PC36IMG6.17.zip

Guys, I just made a partition to my card. Question is, how does a2sd work? Does it automatically move / install application on sd card? Or I still need to use apps2sd to move it?

I uninstalled the apps2sd, but then the application just went to internal memory.
Is that how it goes, or I mess something?

FYI, I'm currently running on Supersonic 3D rc1.2.

ok so with supersonic3d, it has dark tremors built in but you need to download terminal emulator and enter type su and hit enter then type s2sd reinstall. it will then reboot and after that you should be good to go. your apps should be moved to the card after that. to read more about darktremors and moving apps to the card, please read this:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html

I'm sure there is a simple reason for this, but when I connect my EVO to my computer, and run Revolutionary, it just sits there and says "Waiting for device..."

I've tried plugging in the phone before running the program, and I've tried plugging it in after running the program. No change. The phone itself pops up messages saying USB debugging is connected and Charge only, so the phone is obviously connected to the computer.

Any ideas?

I overlooked a step in the initial setup and forgot to install the HTC driver program. Let's see how much further I can get before I miss something else easy. lol

hey guys im stuck on trying to root im a newb to the evo. I have followed the steps installing drivers, extracting revolutonary to desktop. put s.u on root of sd ect ect. When itry to run revolutionary it stays at waiting for device. Im not sure if im missing a step somewhere or if it just still is not recognizing the phone. even when im in bootloader or fastboot i get nothing anyone have any clue what im doing wrong? thanks in advance

Do I still need Apps2sd? And how to check if the a2sd really working?

Thanks for your reply..! :)

no need for apps2sd if you have your card partitioned. but that is up to you. best way to check is use titanium backup. on the main screen it will show you how much is in sd ext and how much you internal memory you have on your phone. to check you can do it a few ways you can run a2sd check in terminal emulator or you just download some apps and see how much is your internal memory goes up and how much your sd ext goes up.

Yeah, the file is correct, I am pretty sure I named it correctly, I change my settings to show my extensions, leaving the zip is ok right? or do I remove the extension as well, I assume the part about not adding the zip is because most people leave the default (do not show extensions) setting.

Other than that I don't know what I may be doing wrong, I also ran the RUU exe file instead of doing it manually, both ways run correctly, but still S-OFF.

Thank you.

Sorry for asking too many questions, but I'm not sure whether it's working or not. After partitioned and flashed a ROM, I have about 50 apps, and still have 270MB on internal memory. And when I tried to download apps, and check on titanium backup, the apps is installed on internal memory.

So it seems that after I flash a ROM, restore apps using Titanium Backup, they were installed on sd ext. But when I download new apps it goes to internal memory.

It got me confused. As far as I remember, I did the partition just as the guide on Rooting for Dummies section. I don't know, I could do something wrong.
Everything works fine and no problem at the performance, I just want to make sure if a2sd is working.

Do you have titanium backup pro? It shows the capacity and use of your sd ext on one of the pages, at the bottom. check it and see what it is at right now.

Apps are usually small, your partition is big, you won't see much change unless you download a HUGE app, so you might go to market and dl Angry Birds, or whatever it is called. install it and see if tb shows the change in sd ext. that is what I did, showed a change that I could see then. It is still going to put something in phone memory too though, not sure how much. and not all apps can take advantage of a2sd either.

there are other steps too, like being in charge only, usb debugging on, fastboot off, antivirus and firewall off, uninstalling any other apps you have that used phone and usb cable from both phone and pc.

Some people have to go to a different pc and go thru all the steps again too. and then there is just trying to wiggle the cable connections at pc and phone, as well.

Hope that helps!

Ok, I see then. So it also put something in my internal memory too. I'm gonna try to find some HUGE application. :)

Thanks for the reply, Dust.

plus having 270mb in your internal memory is good. that number should not go down very much. it will vary as cache and other temp files comes and goes. another way to check is to use terminal emulator and type su then a2sd check and it should list all of your apps that are on the card and performs a symlink and flag file check on your setup. it also outputs a report that shows you if there are issues with your a2sd setup.

First thing you do is make a nandroid of you current setup then make a nandroid of ONLY your wimax keys and save that somewhere safe. Then flash a custom rom and have fun. :D

I've previously made a nandroid of only my wimax keys but I have also extracted my keys using a method at the XDA forums (link and method escapes me at the moment, sorry...perhaps someone can post the link if they have it available.

I was wondering the process for restoring the keys for EACH of the options above (nandroid and extracted)?? Does one simply flash the wimax key-only nandroid to restore?? Is the use of one method easier than the other??

...and I just realized another question: is it suggested to make a nandroid of JUST the Wimax keys or the first three options in Amon RA AND sd-ext AND the Wiman keys all in one nandroid??

THANKS!!

Hey...seems like ggrimaldi is up and running but noticed above....did you mean to write s2sd reinstall or a2sd reinstall?? Grimaldi didn't bring up the issue so perhaps it was overlooked but I think you meant "a" and not "s" correct??

I am trying to root my evo with android 2.3.3 Got a error message asking if my firmware is to new. Has anyone else got this message?
"Error failed to root...is your firmware new"
Thanks
