Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

diggla, You want the Rooting for Dummmies Gingerbread edition. Which is also the first post in this thread.
That has a link for Revolutionary which you want to use to root your EVO with Hboot 2.16.

Unrevoked is for the Evo's that were on Froyo.

Some people have to go to a different pc and go thru all the steps again too. and then there is just trying to wiggle the cable connections at pc and phone, as well.

Thanks im on to a new problem it was the pc for that issue now im fully flashed(by metro) since i was gonna have to pay to get esn added i just saved myself the headache. and im trying to update prl and cant get the COM to show up they put cm7 on the phone when they flashed btw not sure if there is new steps to get them to install properly

you can't update your prl and profiles in cm7 which is an aosp rom. you need to be on a sense rom to do it. check this thread out:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/345848-metro-flashed-evo-info-here.html it has info there on roms that you could flash and how to get your data and sms working.
 
Thanks ill check that out when I get home. I'm in the phandroid app at the moment. One question though. So on this rom there is no way to get the ports to show up in qpst?
 
question...is any one running miui ? i see on english miui site rom 1.8.5 on another miui site 1.10.21 and 1.10.14 and evo is not listed. i want a stable one dont care for 4g its not even offered where im at and i know about the app drawer gotta make folders.

yeah not sure what you have. i went to the forum site and it does not even list the evo. the one in xda is updated pretty often. so not sure. that is the only current one that i know of.
 
The only way that I get the root to recognize my evo is by changing connection from charge only to HTC sync. I don't have sync on my computer and if I can get by this simple task it should be easy as hell for. Someone help me get past this bs loaded driver even old driver deleted old and new so just one. Help me out

i would delete all of the drivers on your computer that is associated with htc sync. also make sure that you have usb debugging on and you do want the phone to be set on charge only.

what exactly is happening? what does revolutionary say when you run it?
 
Anyone know if I can install the new EVO 4G OTA (security fix; see Engadget website for details) without losing the root and wireless tethering?

It said for dummies so I had to ask a stupid questions, but I realized I was in a cardboard box licking paste. Then I rooted my phone **** ya. Now I'm going to smack a little green round guy around, droid
 
Hey guys I used Revolutionary to root my evo 4g and now CWM7 and Superuser do not function anymore. I get Rom manager is not responding and Super user says the app has stopped unexpectedly. WTF? Is there any other apps for rooting? I had an Ascend and used gingerbreak and all was good.

for one do not use rom manager. it tends to be very buggy and causes more issues then it is worth. try the new su app found in the market. also you can try and wipe dalvik cache and cache.

another tip is to switch recoveries to amon ra. much better recovery then cwm. but that is up to you.
