Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

Well I went from being rooted to not rooted. I haven't done anything to my phone since the original root. My frustration level just went to 11. I have not installed any updates to Gingerbread due to what I was told when I had it flashed to Metro.

if you have s-off and if you have a custom recovery, then you are pretty much rooted. if the su from the market does not work then try the one from the guide.

Hey new member here.

Im trying to root my EVO 4G and i have done well up to the point where i install the zip from my SD card. The installation was "aborted"??? What can i do? Wasnt found on SD?

Guys, I need some help here..

I have my card partitioned, and currently running on Supersonic 3D. Tried to copy some data to my computer, but I think that ROM has some problem in connecting to PC. So I insert my SD Card to my PC, but it couldn't opened and said that I need to format it. Pulled out, moved it back to my Evo. After restart, it seems that the phone will not read any applications on my SD Card.

What should I do? I am copying all my data to my PC now using USB Toggle on Recovery (I should have done that on the first place...). Thinking about formatting my SD Card after that.

Will it remove the Card Partition?

Thanks before.

Which Supersonic 3D are you running? There have been issues with usb connection to the computer. You may want to flash a different rom for now until the issues are fixed

Yes, I think I'm going back to Mik3D. I'm currently on Supersonic 3D Beta 1 Sensation XL.

So, if I format, will it remove the partition? or is there another way for my phone to read the applications on the partition?

Yea, the Supersonic 3D XL definitely has an issue;)

If you format, it will remove the partition. Why do you want to remove the partition? Or do you want to start with a clean slate because most of these newer sense 3.0,3.5 roms recommend that the sdcard be partitioned

No, I don't want to remove the partition. What I had in mind when my phone could not read the applications on SD Card is to restart with a clean state. Any other way so my phone can read again the SD Card partition?

So a2sd is working with the rom correct? After you flashed the rom, did you open up Terminal emulator and type

su
a2sd reinstall

If you did this, then did you happen to move your applications to the sdcard via manage applications?

I did that... I also had apps2sd, and everytime I install new applications it always asked if I wanted to move applications to SD Card. I'm not sure if it really works, because everytime I check my memory, both available memory (internal and a2sd) seemed to be reduced. But I thought that just how it worked...

Did I do something wrong??

If you're using a2sd that comes with the rom and you typed a2sd reinstall, then those applications data would be moved to the partition. I would recommend not using apps2sd and not moving apps to the sdcard. If you still need space, have you moved cache to the sdcard? Type

su
a2sd cachesd

or

su
a2sd datasd

I see.. I am now installing Xplod E4G, it seems that a2sd is still there. So I think everything is ok.

But I'm still curious about Supersonic 3D XL. I think I'm gonna make a nandroid and try to reinstall the Supersonic... :D

Thanks alot for your help, Andy..!! :)

yeah apps2sd really does not move apps to the card. all it does is splits the app and moves only part of the app to the card. the other part is left on the phone. so really your memory will improve only slightly when you do. a2sd moves the entire app to the card. you can use both methods, but like andy said i would use only a2sd only.

Rooting my evo... tried the xda process and found that my 2.3.3 Gingerbread needed something else. I think it was Gingerbreak that I used.

So I got to the point of downloading Clock<something or other> and my dumba** PDANet interrupted the download... and then something else happened... forget what. But the upshot was that I got s off but then the phone started installing the original zip from the xda rooting process. Prior to the Gingerbreak, the system wouldn't allow the install of the files from the zip but now *some* of them installed and some failed.

If I had deleted that file from the prior attempt, all would be fine.

And now my USB access to the phone is gone (pc can't see it), the phone can't get past the htc evo splash, and 'recovery' and erasing the storage both fail (in the bootloader menu or sub).

Gah. Hope I can recover my phone. I can get an micro card reader and delete that file and put anything else necessary on it for an install or other attempts to address my issues. The loss of USB support seems a significant issue.

Anyway, TIA for your help...

so do you have s-off? what is your hboot? how long are you waiting on the splash screen? it should take a few minutes to 15 min. at the most..

if you can get a hold of a card reader then go to the switching recoveries section in the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html. follow directions there.

Thanks for the suggestion... during the maintenance downtime this am for the forum I managed to get back to kinda running... have s-off but am running 2.2 (froyo?). I got a zip from another source on the web and dropped it onto the card. So I am wondering... can I get clockwork now and download me some roms or ? BTW, it was a happy moment when the phone came back :)

yes, but i would recommend amon ra 2.3 rather then clockwork mod. go to the guide and go to the switching recoveries section. use the intructions ther to get amon ra. after that you can go and get your flash on.:D
Oh, yeah, my Hboot is 6.16.1002. Is that good? ;)

D'ohBoy
yes that is good:) get your flash on:D

When i try to run revolutionary my computer says that it cant run because AdbWinApi.dll is missing from my computer. why is this happening? i have the dll file right here!!.. :\

you have to extract the file onto your desktop. right click on the file and select extract, then choose your desktop or someplace on your computer where you will know where it is. once extracted then find the revolutionary exec file and run it.

wow. i've gotten WAYYYYYY FURTHERRRRRRR sorry for being such a noob - i'm now on this part..

4.it will detect your phone's specific serial number. use that to generate the beta key on the revolutionary website.

i have followed all of the directions. plugged my phone to my computer - charge only - and it just sits there when i run the file..
