Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

I had the phone #'s on the phone, and a lot of them I just had phone#'s only so they weren't synced with anything.

I don't know why it's such a pain, either...hoping you guys did!!

All of my email/FB did automatically re-appear when I re-synced just like you're talking about.

Can I somehow get in that file manually, or open on my computer or something and see the numbers and enter them manually?

......Or again, is there a smarter/easier/non-noob way to do that?

well the issue you are having is that your phone contacts are not synced with google and when you used tb it saved the contacts as part of the system data. and system data will always have bits and pieces of the previous rom which may or may not cause a conflict with the existing rom.

if you have a nandroid backup of your previous rom with no issues maybe try another app called: MyBackup Pro. it will have the ability to backup and restore your contacts.

1.so make a nandroid backup of your existing rom now.
2.then restore to your previous backup.
3.download mybackup pro from the market
4.backup your contacts
5.go into recovery and restore your current nanadroid backup
6.re-download mybackup pro and restore your contacts.

I got this far twice.....

Beta key accepted - thank you for participating!

Waiting for fastboot...

After that it told me it couldn't communicate with the phone... I rebooted and it updated PRL etc. Also does the vol down + power button thing not work anymore like it did on evo4g?

Hmmm tried to make a call now, and it is some guy telling me error #16 And something about an authentication code...

I am reading the thread for a solution...

I have debugging on and I do not have HTC Sync installed nor do I have PDAnet (at least neither come up in a search).

When it dissconnects me it leaves my phone on the white screen with the following....

-Revolutionary-
shooter xc ship S-OFF RL
hboot 1.40.1100
radio 0.97.00.0518
emmc-boot
-gives the date here

fastboot usb
bootloader
reboot
reboot bootloader
power down

It has not asked me anything about Clockwork Recovery Mod

woke up this morning and my phone is asking me if I want to download system upgrade 1.13.651.7 - FOTA update.

Anyone?

Looks like you have s-off, so that's all that matters. You need to flash a custom recovery probably.

See here for directions to get your recovery.

EDIT: Wait a second...Looks like you have the 3d? If that's the case you will need TWRP for your recovery. Can you get to recovery?

If you mean the vol down + power.... no. I can only get to that screen if I run revolutionary. It then says it loses communication (or something) with the phone and I get the options I listed above...to go into bootloader etc etc.

Also txt msgs do not work.

I restarted my phone and as it stands I can use the internet, mail etc but I can't make phone calls.

While I would like to get the custom ROM going I definitely need to get back my ability to make calls and send txt I am at home with my 2 year old son so phone calls are kinda important. *lol*

Should I go and install that update?

Btw yes I do have the 3d. What is twrp?

So who has a guess on my predicament? o)

Hmmm.....

So I got impatient ( usually a bad thing) and I connected the phone up again and ran revolutionary and upon running it it asked me if I wanted to flash recovery so I clicked yes...

waiting to see what happens now.

yep looks like that is all you need to do. you have s-off but you need a recovery to flash and make nandroid backups. once it is finished you are good to go. one thing though, this is the evo 4g forum and not the evo 3d forum. any further issues, i suggest that you post your questions there. http://androidforums.com/evo-3d-all-things-root/

Got to the point where it tells me to install the .zip file. I click it and it goes this far....

Mounting system...
Deleting System: bin/su...
Deleting System: xbin/su...
E:Error in /sdcard/su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip

Holy crap! I honestly thought I was in the 3D forum! I have posts in both and I just screwed up! Sorry going to post there now...

Real quick. Did I use the wrong program to root?

Sweet...I had My Backup before I had Ti. There is still an old BU created with My BU on my sd card. So I d/l a new copy of the app, find the old files, and restore via that app, correct?
-OR- am I going to run into the same issue because my contacts weren't synced with goog?

Also, how do you sync all of your phone# contacts with Goog? People that all I have is a name and a #.

And BTW, what is the process for restoring a nand?

Thanks, I'm in pretty far over my head here, without you guys I'd be restoring back to factory....and I really like mik2.55!

yep you are correct with mybackup pro. once you flash the rom just do a restore of your contacts and you should be good to go.

i'm not currently on a sense rom right now, but when you initially enter a phone number you have a drop down menu that you can select to either enter as phone or google. if you choose google then all of your contacts will be backed up on google's cloud. and all you need to do is sync with it and you are good to go. what is cool is if you get a different android phone, just sign in to google and your contacts will be on your phone again. try and do an edit of each contact and see if you can link it to google that way.

and as far as restoring a nandroid backup, go into recovery and select restore and backup and select restore and pick your nandroid backup (usually listed by date). select the nandroid backup and reboot.

OK, awesome. Might I humbly suggest that be added to the guide? If I would have synced all contacts to Google before I rooted, I'd be done right now!

Like I said, I'm a a big ol' Noob, so if you need this guide idiot-proofed......well, I'm your idiot.
:p

ive gone through everthing multiple times and the beta key simply wont work. also at the same time im not exactly sure what gingerbread actually means. i know my android is 2.3.3 so i stuck with that and followed these directions. thanks in advance

Got my nand re-loaded...all good there. Now Syncing contacts is tough.

A web search tells me this is a pretty common evo problem, and I'm getting the 'sync is unavailable message' that others have gotten. Does anyone have a workaround? Just want to sync all contacts to google.

curious on when you get that message? is that when you tried to link your contact to google? or is it when you first sign in after flashing?

Last day or so I noticed that my Superuser app (v. has been force-closing. I'm running MikG v2.5. Haven't done anything "flash-wise" to my phone...just running it as I would during the day.

Had an issue with market links in Titanium and also apps installed not appearing my my Market app (v3.1.5) "My Apps" area so I wiped some Market data and restored the market links with market doctor in Titanium...kinda/sorta worked...so was still trying to work things out. I downloaded an update that was available in the Market and got a pop up that Superuser "stopped unexpectedly" and needed to force close. Did that. Then (don't remember which process I was running) happened while doing some things in Titanium. I just tried to launch Superuser from my app drawer and it won't launch...same "stopped unexpectedly"

I booted into recovery, wiped cache and dalvik but still getting the force close issues with Superuser.

I believe this version is the Superuser that came with the MikG ROM I flashed...I have not updated or attempted to update the app.

Was wondering how I can fix this short of reflashing the full ROM?? Is there an apk that I can install?? I've seen some Superuser updating apps like "SU Update Fixer" but have NEVER used. Just wondering how to fix...:confused:

THANKS!!

I am also having problems with "waiting on device .... Followed instructions to the T. I removed HTC Syn (left drivers)>removed battery>rebooted>reran Revolutionary as well. I was able to generate key but it would not allow me to cut and paste it even going on the upper left corner of the DOS.

My phone: HTV EVO 4G
Android Version: 2.3.3
Baseband Version: 2.15.00.0808
S.W.# 4.53.651.1
PRI: 2.15_003

Thank You

Went To Settings>accts&Sync selected my google acct, told it sync everything (after restoring my previous nand). Got an error message "Sync is unavailable now and will be back shortly" - a google search tells me that apparently 'shortly' means within a couple years or so!

The good news is that I restored contacts via My Backup, and they're all there and the phone seems to be stable & running!! :D

Now....on to selecting a kernel....

make sure that usb debugging is on and that your antivirus is turned off. any thing that needs to connect to the phone via usb like htc sync, pda, or doubletwist needs to be uninstalled.

If I nandroid backup my current rom (mik3d b1) when I flash a new rom will I have to re-install my apps and settings?

yes when you flash a new rom everything gets wiped and you have to start all over again. but you can back up your apps and its data via titanium backup. and your contacts should be synced with google and saved on google's cloud so that when you sign in on your new rom and sync with google your contacts will be there.

Yes. I performed all those as well. The first problem I get is that when I run Revolution program. I get "waiting on device". I haven't been able to get passed that.

1.what about the HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe driver. do you have this one installed?

2.also just to make sure but do you have usb debugging on?

3.what about another computer. for some reason some have switched to a different computer and it worked.

4.does your computer see your phone? can you get access to the card via your computer?

Here I go again, answering my own questions!! :D...

Learned over on themikmik forum from a new friend Jadeboy7 that there have been some force close issues with v3.0.1 of Superuser app. I, however, had 2.3.6.3...and oldie but a goodie with some issues apparently. I went to the market and downloaded a new version from just today, 3.0.2, updated specifically to help with force close issues. When I first tried to updated app I STILL have FC issues but Jade recommended cleaning the Superuser App data and that fixed the problem! I'm back...

So, in summary, if you are having Superuser app force close issues, download the latest v3.0.2 in the Market then clear the app data at Home

Speaking of Kernels, this might be off-topic, but anyone want to chime in on a favorite for running w/ Mik2.55? Primarily I want battery life & stability.

Thanks!
