Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

Hello...

Wanted to clarify a couple things you mentioned in your response...

So if "most files" are using amend then the limitation is the fact that Clockwork uses edify, correct??
yes that is corect. you will not be able to flash most things because of that.

And to clarify this/state it another way...Clockwork 2.6 and Amon RA 2.3 will BOTH work with BOTH scripts (edify and amend)?? Does that mean that a nandroid backup created with Clockwork 2.6 can be restored by Amon RA 2.3 and vice versa...or am I understanding/presuming something incorrectly??
no you are not correct. nandroids are specific to recovery. so clockwork mod nandroids will only work with clockwork mod. but, a clockwork mod 2.6 nandroid will work with clockwork mod 3+. but never with amon ra.

The reason I'm asking the latter question is because when I flashed Mik 2.52 a couple days ago with partitioning and pre-wipe using Amon RA as recommended (using Amon RA recovery for the first time) I could SWEAR that I was experimenting a bit while booted up in Amon RA recovery and tried to open an previous CLOCKWORK nandroid file and Amon RA would NOT READ the file. Thinking back, I THOUGHT I was on Clockwork 2.6 when I created the pre-Amon RA nandroids but it is LIKELY that I was on 2.5.x...which would explain why Amon RA would not read those nandroid (if I understand the "both script compatibility" issue correctly, right??

i wish that they were interchangeable but they are not. amon ra nand's only work with amon ra. so it is no wonder that it did not work when you tried to restore the other's nandroid. and it has nothing to do with script compatibility.

Yeah, i was TOTALLY new to Amon Ra and thought a nand was a nand and was confused with Amon Ra wouldn't recognize my old Clockwork nands. I understand better now, thank you.

With my understanding of the above, I was looking to create an update.zip of Titanium (if you recall, I had a problem...that resolved with some non-data wipes...that I could NOT install Titanium from the Market). There is an option to create an edify or an amend zip of the app. Since I'm probably going to stick with Amon Ra, might as well choose the amend version of the zip, right?? And if I EVER wanted to use that amend zip with Clockwork (for whatever reason) I would have to be running Clockwork 2.6, yes??

well amon ra is compatible with both scripts, so i would choose the edify version. that way it will work on all versions of clockwork mod, if you ever decide to go back. and it will also still work with amon ra as well.

Yeah...um...right...yeah...so I was just TESTING you with that question.

After seeing your response, I'm saying to myself, "BOY that was a dumb questions." I know, I know..."there are NO dumb question"...but seriously, my question was DUMB. LOL!! Could not be more TOTALLY 180-DEGREE opposite of my understanding and the proper approach!!! LOLOL!!! :D:D:D

WAY past my bedtime. Nighty-night....

LOL..I love the formatting you put in your posts. :D

BTW...You won't ever want or need to go back to clockwork.

Also TWRP is working on something pretty sweet. See this post here.

Ok, so been looking into doing this but I am a bit confused on this whole thing. So if I root, as per instructions, I will have basically a stock 'rooted' phone with superuser on it, or at least superuser after putting it onto the phone by placing the 1 file onto root of filesystem and flashing (I think that is how it went).

Now, with that said, what happens to the contacts and settings for contacts, pictures, music, etc? Does that stuff along with phone settings remain intact after rooting and you would have a rooted phone or will all that change as well? I like the Mik3D rom, so if I put that onto the phone, will everything stay, or will it go away and I will have to reset everything? Yes I am a noob to this, but not to messing with electronics.. Have repaired LCD's and a bunch of other things but what scares me the most is bricking the phone as it isn't a year old to me yet....

Edit: Forgot to ask if after rooting, could I just put the Mik3D onto the phone or is there something else that I would need to do first?

1. Yes after you root you will just have a rooted stock phone.
2. Your contacts should be stored in your google account and will automatically sync to your phone after you flash the rom and sign in. Pictures, music, etc is stored on your sd and will all be left in tact. Always a good idea to create a backup of your sd card prior to rooting.
3. Just follow this post here to get yourself set up with Mik3d.
4. Don't be scared to root and don't be scared to brick, virtually impossible to do so by rooting. Really the only sure fire way to do it would be to screw up with updating your radios. Just worry about that later.
5. Be sure to read as much as you can and ask as much as you can and you will be fine.:D

ps. once you get root and before you flash your first rom make a nand backup of your stock setup just in case something goes wrong with the flash.

EDIT: Welcome to the forums!

anytime you flash a rom, you will need to wipe data as well as dalvik cache and cache. and since you are wiping data, you will loose all of your settings and data. so yes you will have to redo all of that. but there are things like titanium backup that you can use to backup and restore your apps and its data. your contacts should be linked to google so they are backed up in google's cloud and when you sync with google, your contacts will be restored. and you can use either my backup pro or sms backup to back up your text messages.
welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!
and yes you could put mik3d on your phone after rooting. follow the guide. it has a flashing section.

edit:nick beat me to it. thanx nick

Ok... So if I have read everything, start at the top of this thread, follow to a 'T' (to speak) Once have s-off and superuser onto phone, then use the backup utilities (found in market?) to backup contacts (already exported them out with phone util) along with the rest of the settings/apps. Then can proceed to put on the mik3d rom, now do I have to put a kernal on as well or will the rom work without doing anything else?

all roms have a kernel. it is up to the dev on which kernel they put on it. most of the time it is a stock kernel. so if you want a custom kernel then you will have to flash it separately.

edit: just make sure that you flash a gingerbread sense kernel.

Ok, sounds good, I guess it is up to me to say 'pull the trigger' then and do this. I get way too nervous trying to do things like this, but have managed to flash my linksys router to use dd-wrt firmware so I think this will be easier than that. I thought I bricked the router, but managed to recover it to stock and then re-did it and all was good...

I was trying to follow along on the Mik3D Beta 1 forum to which one was the most current and stable version, but I can't figure out which one I should use that will have everything going in it yet... back to looking....

Thanks for the help and if I have any more q's, will be back on here as you all are very helpful.

well i keep coming back to mik3d beta 1, myself. so that is up to you. i think that it is a great rom to try out. it is very stable and i have not found any issues with it yet. i love sense 3.0.

No problem, happy to help. I'd like to add to this, you should wipe system and boot as well before flashing new rom.

You don't need to back up your contacts, just import them into google from the export you did with your phone and then the next time you log in to your gmail account on your phone they automatically appear. This is another reason why I said to make a backup of your, just rooted-not reset phone. That way if for some reason you feel you may have missed an app/contact/setting/etc you can just nand your current rom you are on and restore the stock just rooted one and get what you want and then restore the nand you just created. I know that sounds like a lot and confusing...it will all make sense when you get to flashing. ;)

If you want a 100% stable/fast/reliable rom you should just flash MikG 2.55 or if you want to try some sense 3.5 you can give the runnymede rom (supersonic 3d) one a shot too. It's a little buggy but still runs pretty good. Mik's beta roms typically run just as good if not better than a lot of other peoples final releases. That guide I linked you before still holds for all those.

Now get your root and flash on! :D

So should I just go with the Beta 1 and not A1 then do the BT fix. Or is the A1 better?

Getting all the files in order to start this process... Just wanted to make sure I had the right one...

Ocn, what particular file did you use for the kernal and the v6 supercharger? I see many mentions of what you used, but when I go there there is a couple different versions... Am d/l the rest of the stuff now....

Beta 1 is the newest.

i use mik3d beta 1.

and as far as kernels go that will depend on your phone. every kernel will react differently on different phones. but i would try the golden monkey 1.1 kernel first, then maybe the aggressive freedom (and move on down to the others, more freedom, freedom and less freedom), and then try chop suey. main thing is to give each kernel a few days before deciding to move on.

also look into getting setcpu from the market. it will also help in battery life. is scales the cpu to run faster or slower (overclocking or underclocking).

also think about using amon ra 2.3 as your recovery.

+1 on amon ra.

I have downloaded the following: HTCDriver, pc36img_RA_2.3 from the guide, but when trying to d/l this one superuser su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip it takes me to the site and after the 10 second clock runs down, it restarts and I cannot d/l it... will try another browser instead of IE... Also looked for the golden monkey 1.1 but search on here at the moment is not working? as it is stuck at loading....

I will try another browser to d/l the superuser file, will let you know how I make out.. As to the setcpu, that is after rooting and applying the recovery then putting int mik3d mod in right?

edit: got the superuser file, used firefox.....

Ok, finally found golden monkey and I think I got everything now.... So I root phone, then install the ra 2.3? then do nandroid backup then apply the golden monkey, then can apply the mik3d mod... then put in setcpu, then can restore contacts, etc... sound about right?

anyone wanna help me root my evo
i cleared my SD card, factory reset, and did the pc36img update
version 2.2
kernel 2.6.32.11.19
software 3.70.651.1
hboot 2.10

OK, forget my last post. I figured that out. I may have screwed up. I was trying to swittch recoveries to amon ra 2.3 and completed the step by step instructions. I rebooted and when my phone started I had a phone that looked exactly like my old HTC wipped EVO before the root. Did I do something wrong? I already deleted the PC36IMG file via USB. Should I not have no that? I'd like to move on to the flashing step but I have no idea how to restart in recovery. Help!

Apologies for being a n00b

Hi Everyone. I think I am successfully rooted, I am just trying to recover accurately. I am stuck on how to get the PC36IMG zip file onto my root after I download it. The third step under "Switching Recoveries" says to'transfer the file to the root (that means not in any folder) of the sd card.' But currently my phone is connected to my PC via "power only". How do I change that to mounting my SD Card back onto my PC via this new rooted system?
welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
if you are still in recovery, you can select "mount as storage" then select "mount usb storage" and move the file that way.

the other way is to boot up. connect you phone to the pc then select disk drive and then move the file over that way.

sort of. after amon ra and the nandroid flash the rom first then the kernel.
