Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

yes it is the cache partition. make sure that when you flash a rom that you wipe dalvik cache, cache (cache partition) and data(data/factory reset) in recovery. also make sure that you make a nandroid backup before wiping and flashing.

also i would recommend that you switch recoveries. amon ra has been proven to be the best recovery (also the amon ra style recovery which is new, people here seem to like it. i have not tried it yet). you can get it in the roms/kernel sticky.

Ok, I did them both and it's working fine. I'm still a scardy cat when flashing roms but the guides look really through. I actually don't know how to change a recovery O_O lol

ok flashing is really simple really. main thing is when flashing roms that you do some research on them. always know what your are flashing. and ask questions if you have any before you do. also make sure to make a nandroid backup before you do. you can read about them here or go to the devs website and read the op for the rom you are interested in.

you can get to most of them from the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/284413-roms-kernels-download-page.html.

i would try mikg 2.6. it is a sense rom and mik is one of my favorite devs out there. his roms are always simple, fast, and reliable.

also in the guide there is a switching recoveries section that walks you through the process. plus you have this forum to help you out.:)

For wiping general Cache is it "Wipe Cache Partition" in the Revolutionary recovery? I just wiped the dalvik cache

Huge +1 on Amon Ra. But if you want to stick with revolutionary I would like to add to the list of things to wipe.

I can't remember exactly where it's at, but it might be in the advance menu and it's the format boot and format system options.

So in all you should format/wipe boot, system, data, cache, dalvik cache, factory reset, and for good measure .android_secure and sd-ext.

Good luck and ask if you have questions/problems.

I just checked out the ROM you mentioned. It looks great actually. I was wondering what is the best ROM for battery with the stock kernal. I actually don't want to change the kernal but I'm looking to change ROMs soon

why do you not want to try kernels? they will help you get better battery life. plus you can over and underclock your phone which in turn can get you also better battery life.
I just installed MikG 2.59 ROM and I'm pretty esctatic right now! Oh man! Installing ROMs are gonna be my new hobby when I'm bored lol
also 2.6 is out now for mikg. just an fyi.

and flashing can be addicting. you have been forewarned:D

I've looked everywhere and can't find 2.6. I even went to his forum and couldn't find it -_- lol

I got s-off, then I turned S-on because I thought i did it wrong. I now go back into the revolutionary program to turn s-off again, and it says that it is already off, but when i go back on the boot loader it says that its on.... I dont know what to do to be able to get the S-off again. I'm both confused and frustrated.... I hope someone will be able to help me out.

what is you hboot? to get fully unrooted is a two step process. you need to install the s-on file first then run the ruu to get you the stock rom and stock recovery.

I did find the s-on But that was all I did... is there another step in order to start over from the beginning? I'm a noob sorry

so this is just an fyi, but you rwally need to slow down and do some research before making an attempt on your phone. by going in bling like that is a good way of bricking your phone.

most unrooting process are basically two steps. step 1 is to get securities turned on(s-on). step 2 is to change the hboot back to it original form and to load the stock recovery and stock rom.

so i'm not sure what guide you used but you need to finish the second step of unrooting before you can re-root your phone. so please read the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html. go to the unrooting process and follow steps 7-12.

please feel free to ask if you have any more questions.

edit:forgot to mention:
welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THANKS FOR THE WELCOME! I have decided to abandon my quest for a rooted phone. I have tried the RUU along with the S-on tool to try and start from scratch.... : ( I have decided to cut my losses and not attempt to ruin my phone... If I re-enter my serial number to get another beta key, I wonder if it will allow me to S-Off. As for right now I'm Going to read, understand, and ask questions, before I try again. Thanks for Your help!

slowing down is always a good idea. but i would not abandon the quest for root. it has so many advantages that it is waaaaaay worth it to root your phone.

but the reason why you can't re-root with revolutionary is that your hboot has changed. when you run revolutionary it changes your hboot. if you ran the ruu, it will return your hboot back and also give you a stock recovery and stock rom. then you can run the revolutionary again.

Hey guys!! Just thought is pop in and say Happy Thanksgiving. Hope everyone's holiday is great!!

Flashing is as addictive as a bad drug!!! Although, after flashing MikG 2.60, Chop Suey 9.1, and nick1313's Purple Heaven theme I'm finding the need to flash anything else moot!! I'm in the process of learning to theme MikG! Too much fun!! Here's a peek of the phone screen from MikG & nick's Purple theme!!!

That looks realy cool but i hate to tell ya that 2.61 is out now. I still cant decied if i want to flah up or not. Im so happy with 2,59.

Man, flashing is EXTREMELY addicting. I've flashed 5 times since early this morning (12 or 1 am EST) lol I really like MikG 2.59 and 2.61, they are both great. I tried CM7, and 2 others I can't put my finger on at the moment.

Ocnbrze.....its great that you and some other members are here to help us noobs out, playing with your phone with a potential to jack it is very unnerving to say the least....anyway, I do have root, and several apps, but currently still running the stock ROM, I want to flash this MikG you have been talking about, but not sure what to expect...what will I lose or gain over the stock ROM?,What features will I lose over the stock GB ROM? I also want to put a larger SD card in while I'm at it with a partition, but have read a lot about problems just trying to put a bigger sd card in this thing, any info you can give greatly appreciated! Thanks :)

I tried to flash both files that were provided in your dummy guide to return to stock. The first one never asked me if i wanted to update (normal boot) and the second one loaded but never did anything after.. I'm stuck yet again

I know that 2.61 is out but there isn't a lot of difference. Some scripting and performance tweaks. Nick has 2.61 theme already, I just have to have enough time in between cooking to flash. I'll probably get to it on Friday!

Quick tip in case others run against this -

I just got a replacement phone from Asurion after dropping and cracking my screen. Oddly enough, Asurion does not include the S/N in the sticker under the battery (at least on my phone). While I fretted for a bit, don't worry, Revolutionary will display your S/N, you can go back and get a key before gaining s-off.
