Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

I downloaded CM7 and there are no Google apps with it (i.e. Market, Gmail, Contacts, etc.... lol) where can I find all these stuff from?

the one the dustwun linked it is called the gapps (google apps)file. this one is slightly unique in that it has the sprint vvm included. most of the gapps file do not have it. once you flash it (there is no need to wipe, but it does not hurt to wipe dalvik cache and cache), you should have the market and other google apps back.

Thanks to you all I was able to root and have lots of fun as to unroot for bringing the unit to service and be able to get a new phone without any isues at all thanks again! re rooting as i type lol!

Hello all,

I'm having an issue with the revolutionary program. I actually rooted using this exact same process with my original Evo just a few months ago. Unfortunately for me I had to get a replacement (which sucks b/c it's refurbished) once the old 1 got jacked up.
Now I'm trying to root this new 1, but I keep getting stuck at the revolutionary program. It keeps saying it's "waiting for device", which leads me to believe that it's an issue with the HTC drivers. But, I really have no idea though.
The computer and the phone see each other fine, but the program doesn't see the phone. I've double checked to make sure that my anti-virus and firewall are off, and they are. I've reset my phone to factory settings, and erased my SD card. I've installed the Drivers and have re-installed them over and over. Nothings working for me though. So, any help would be appreciated.

was wondering if you got your new one online from sprint? And if you did, did you unroot the old phone before you sent it to them. I rooted my orig evo a month ago and tonight I smashed the screen, so im wondering if I get replacment from them, do I need to unroot before I send my old one back, Im wondering if they look at them when they get it?

So I smashed my screen on my rooted EVO, Do I need to unroot it before I send it in to them. They send you a phone then you send your damaged one back. Do they look to see if its rooted?

Hey, man don't send that rooted phone back to them it will void your warranty. Rooting isn't illegal but it does void your warranty whether you pay for insurance or not. You should either unroot your phone (if it isn't a permanent root), or tell them that you lost it. The same thing happened with me my screen broke, I tried to replace it myself and the touch screen ended up not working any more. So I told them that I lost my phone, since I couldn't go in an unroot it. Make to give every indication that you lost it when going through that Asurion process.

You need to make shure you have usb debugging turned on. should be under settings/applications/development

We were right - the refurb missed a few quality control checkpoints...
Unrooted, and back to Sprint it goes(with the old ROM)! Thank you for everything.

This is what I did with my rooted evo phone that I dropped and smashed the screen. It was still working fine so instead of unrooting and sending back in for a REFUB one and getting charged $100. I called a local sprint authorized phone repair center (not a sprint store). First I asked them if they could replace a screen on a EVO, they said yes, then I told them that it was rooted would there be a problem and they said as long as it works fine there wouldn't be a problem. I brought it in dropped it off did some black Friday shopping came back hour half later and they had it all done. No fee at all. The cool part is my screen was getting pretty nasty before I smashed it and now it looks like a brand new"ROOTED" phone. I am so glad I called them before I unrooted and sent back. So I guess im saying if you smash your rooted phone but it still seems to work fine try what i did. Peace

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!
do you have htc sync uninstalled? and the same goes for its drivers as well. also did you install the htc driver on to your computer?

I'm having an issue de-rooting. I used revolutionary method to root and I followed your instructions and put the pc36img zip file on the sd card and I booted into the boot loader. When I booted into the boot loader it looks for the file and errors out says the image file is not present. Any ideas ? ?

make sure that you name the file correctly. it needs to be PC36IMG (with no extra zip) and not pc36img. also make sure that you have it on the root of the card that means not in any folder. it needs to be just on the card.

and the error is normal. it will always say that unless it finds the PC36IMG file. it is programmed to always look for it when booted into bootloader.

I'm trying to wipe dalvik, but I get this message:

E: can't mount /dev/block/mmcblkop2 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0)
(invalid argument)
Error mounting /sd-ext/dalvik-cache!
Skipping format

It happened twice, but it was successful for the third time. What happen guys?
I'm ok with this, and the phone run just normal, but just wondering what happened.

I'm partitioned, and currently running on Supersonic 3D Beta 2, also using amon ra.

Thanks in advance..! :)

Have you partitioned your sd card?

what do i need gapps with aosp rom for?? shed some light please im confused

gapps stands for google apps. it is all of google's proprietary apps that are copy righted by google and thus are not allowed in aosp roms for the most part. so if you want your market and gmail and such then you need to flash the gapps file. just make sure to wipe dalvik cache and cache before flashing it.
