Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

First off, thanks for the awesome guide. My EVO 4G was rooted in no time. I managed to do so with a broken Volume Up button as well! (I broke it replacing my digitizer...it's not the replaceable black rocker but the little grey thing that the rocker pushes.)

Anyways, onto my question...I'm on stock ROM and kernel, 2.3.3. I want to switch to CM7. Your guide said that in order to use superwipe, I would need to switch to Amon Ra or trwp (I have Clockworkmod 4.0). But I saw that you need a Volume Up button for installing Amon Ra and twrp.

1. Can I install Amon Ra / twrp through fastboot or some other way to avoid using the Volume Up button? I don't know how to do that but I'm sure I can look it up...
2. Is skipping the superwipe and sticking with CWM 4 an option while flashing CM7?

Thanks!

this is the only time i will recommend rom manager. do not use rom manager but with it you can switch recoveries to amon ra without having to go through hboot and using the vol up button. once you switched to amon ra rom manager will not work anyways.

Umm... you guys are awesome!!! This is the ONLY guide that worked for me first try no problems, no issues. Seriously, awesome. Thank you so much. I was worried there was no way to hack 2.16 and gingerbread. Now hopefully I can figure out how to install ICS with the same ease.

THANK YOU!!!

YOU ALL ROCK!!!

Kernels will mainly help your performance and save battery life
OK Thanks.
So I'd like to switch to Amon Ra. I have ClockWorkMod installed from when I rooted per this thread. It looks like I just add Amon RA and leave ClockWorkMod in place?
Any link for the proper Amon for my phone? (see below)

Also what suggestions does anyone have for a kernel that would improve performance and battery life for my setup? (see below)

EVO 4G
Hboot 6:16 Revolutionary CWM V.0.1.4
Radio 2.15
ROM - Sense "Classic V005, Beta 003" by tommytomatoe

if you follow the guide there is directions and a link to amon ra. and when you install amon ra it will replace clockwork mod and there is no need to wipe or anything like that.

as far as kernels go, it is hard sometimes to recommend a kernel as kernels will react differently on different phones. also it will depend on the rom you are on. tommy's is a gingerbread sense rom. i would start with the aggressive freedom and also maybe try the new anthrax kernel.

Ok, I started off with a factory reset, and then uploaded the SU file to the SD card. I followed all the steps past 9, when I select recovery, I get the triangle with the phone, so I pulled the battery like stated in the thread, and now, if I reboot my phone, it stays stuck on the white htc loading screen, I tried to run revolutionary again, and I get this in the dos window.

... I have tried the reboot multiple times, and have let my phone sit on the loading screen for over an hour, it will not boot past that screen. I read on another thread, that my phone has no Rom at the moment, but basically, my phone will not show up as a Disk Drive on my computer, and revolutionary does not recognize the phone.... please a timely response would help, Otherwise I'm stuck with a paper weight until I leave for boot camp.

Edit: My phone will still connect to my computer (I get the USB connection sound) but in my computer the disk drive shows up blank o.O and says to insert a disk so I'm guessing my setting is stuck on charge only, and on the HBoot screen it reads, revolutionary. supersonic evt3 ship s-off. hboot-6.16.1002. microp-041f. touch panel-atmel224_16ab. radio-2.15.00.0808. Mar 8 2011,17:02:15. It checks the p36img and asks if I want to update.... I have declined the update so far, but it still wont load, or let me use recovery, or revolutionary.

I do have an sd card slot on my computer but if I try to move anything to and from it on my computer it asks me to format, if I format is this going to mess up my phones settings? Or can I place something on there to fix this.

2nd edit after fix: Im leaving this post for future reference to anyone who tries this lol, I basically had a pc36img from another root i attempted that failed, that was not deleted. it corrupted my recovery downloads, so i just removed the SD card and fastbooted a RUU into it, still working on finishing the root.

Well it sounds as if you are rooted, CONGRATS!, have you tried to select recovery when you get to the hboot screen?

If you can't get to recovery, it sounds like you will need one. Try selecting recovery from the hboot screen if that doesn't work report back.

ok like nick said you are rooted. when you selected no for the update that was to install clockwork mod recovery. and that is why you can't go into recovery because you still have the stock recovery. go into the guide and follow the directions to switch recoveries. i would use amon ra anyways.

and what ruu did you use? you should not be messing with ruu's unless you are unrooting your phone.

Ok guys a got a quick qestion... I was partitioning my sd card via the attached instructions, and it seems to have taken, but the little whilt dots have been flashin past my screen for about an hour and 20 min. Do I let this thing go all night or do I need to consider a batt pull?

where exactly are you at in the process?

I'm hoping you guys can help. I'm trying to unroot so i can take my phone into Sprint to get the usb fixed. Right now I can't connect to pc and it sometimes charges. I followed the unrooting steps and have S-on but when I try to flash the stock rom it doesn't work. It finds the file and goes to checking PC36img.zip but then doesn't give an option to accept update. So is there anything I can do?

Welcome to the forums!!!! :D
What is your hboot #?
What are your current radios?

You may need to downgrade your radios to match your hboot prior to running the ruu.
Also, make sure the PC36IMG is named exactly that. Not PC36IMG.zip.zip as windows hides extensions.

before you try granite suggestion, you might want to try the ruu.exe file that is listed at the bottom of the unrooting section. this ruu, you run on your computer. make sure that your phone has usb debugging turned on.

Here's where I'm at.
S-on
HBOOT 6.17.0001
Radio 2.15.00.05.02
I can't run the ruu exe because I can't connect to a pc, the phone only charges and the pc doesn't detect it. Thanks for the help.

i have never unrooted.. but just wondering...

he unrooted first.. then tried to "flash" a stock ROM.

is that not backwards?
if you unrooted, then it stops you from flashing anything!!! right?

it is a ruu so you theoretically should be able to run regardless of s-on or not. that is how unrevoked works. but also you can the ruu first as well and still get s-on.

@aloneagain have you tried other cables? also maybe try and reboot your computer. not sure why but for some the ruu does not work for them but the ruu exe will.

ok so i just updated the unrooting section in the guide. i added the 4.54 ruu and the ruu.exe file. i also switched the order in which you unroot. the order does not really matter, but it might help some.

Ok so the 4.54 ruu kinda worked. It changed the hboot and radio but then stopped and started again but then nothing else happened just back to the bootloader screen.
I restarted the bootloader and tried again. It still just does steps 1 and 3 then checks pc36img again and then says checking then it says Wrong zipped img.

well that is a new one i have not heard of. usually it will scan for it then it will load it then check for it. and if it works it will then ask you to update. but for some it does not work and just goes back to the hboot menu. the wrong zip img error is new. what is your hboot now?
