Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

hey guys,
i moved the conversation here.

i think that a guide is easier to follow then some video. for me i printed out matlock's dummies guide and used that to follow step by step to get me rooted.

I would not delete bloatware like that. There are two ways you should do that. One is to use titanium backup and first freeze the bloatware. Once you know your phone is stable then you can dele them. You just need to be careful what you delete. That is why TV is great because you can always unfreeze things if things go wrong.

Second, you can always just flash a rom. Most roms have the bloatware removed. I would try mikg 2.61. It is fast, smooth, and stable. Plus it had sense 2.1 and sense 3.0 which are amazing.way better then stock.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I should be able to do this I do work with computers often, but there is a step Im missing. How do I remove software manually?

I followed the directions of the initial post completely.

I got to the step for removing bloatware and followed the link.
xda-developers - View Single Post - [WIP] /system/app APK's - Safe to remove list and functions
But it doesnt display where I can go to remove the .apk files.

I read the whole original post, do I need to flash my rom to get the desired effect?

ok again you should be using titanium backup to do this. it can delete stuff as well.

but if you must, you need to use a file manager app one that has it where you can change permissions. try es file manager or preferably root manager. with root manager at the top is a button where you can change permissions so that it will mount as read and write. once you do that then you can delete any system files that you want.

if you do this route make sure that you make a nandroid backup before doing so.

So, I just rooted my phone a couple months ago, and havent flashed anything due to the fact that i dont know what in the world i am doing. My phone seams very laggy and its so annoying. Can someone please help me b.c. i feel as if I am waisting my time with the root. Im not very intelligent with the root thing. These are my problems...

1. I have not flashed anything
2. I dont know how to install kernals
3. My phone is laggy as hell and i barley have any apps on the phone

hi and welcome to AF...

you have the hard part done... rooting.

you need to tell us.. what phone you have and what root process you used (link to the instructions).

did you get a recovery installed.. I hope so, from the instructions we should be able to tell if you did or not.
then you have to go do a nandroid backup .. asap.

in your phone sub-forum.. you need to find the root section.. there you can find all the different custom ROMs and details: what it has, and how to install it.
another good site to check out for ROMs / stuff: Android Forums & Windows Phone Discussion @ xda-developers

Kernels are not always needed... these are like drivers to help the hardware and software communicate better / differently.

make sure you have your google contacts and calendor synced to the cloud.. so it will push that info back to your phone, when you reboot into a brand new OS/ROM.
the general steps to "flash" new modifications to your phone:
1. reboot you phone into "recovery" mode.. different for each phone (refer to you rooting instructions)
2. Nandroid backup.. so if it is not good.. you can always restore phone back to the state it was in.
3. wipe. for best/safest results, wipe everything: Data, cache, dalvik
4. Flash the mod you want.. be it a new ROM or Kernel or theme..
5. reboot.. be ready to wait.. up to 20 mins for it to boot.

in the sub-forum of your phone.. you can get more detailed instructions..
post your question again in there.

good luck

welcoms to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ok so i would read the op to this thread. the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html has a ton of info that will help you out on how on everything there is in the world of being rooted. it will explain about recoveries, nandroid backups, roms and how to flash them and much more. so please i would take the time to read the guide.

as far as your lagginess goes try going into recovery and wipe dalvik cache and cache. that will always be the first thing that you do when you have an issue like your phone is slow. also it is good to do that when you encounter bugs, glitches, and errors. most of the time it will solve most small issues.

Hi Guys! New to the forum here. I used to mod the crap out of my windows based phones but as with all good things that came to an end. I have had my EVO for over a year now and I got sick of Running out of memory and I found you guys. This guide was awesome and very simple to follow. I have titanium backup and I was able to remove all of sprints fantastic bloatware. I only have one tiny little bug. I installed the "sick battery life" like in the video on youtube and now my camera displays a white screen when taking pics. The pics come out fine but I have no way to aim lol. Has anyone ran into this issue? any recommendations? I am interested in possibly installing a new ROM as suggested above. Any one else have feedback on the ROMs out there?

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what rom are you on? did you try the kernel recommended in the video? because that kernel netarchy toastmod is for froyo roms and not gingerbread roms.

Well I did it as posted on here and I guess I am running gingerbread still.. Maybe thats the issue. How do I go back? Load a different kernel?

what part of the video did you follow? all of it? just trying to understand what you did.

also i would read the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html. it has ton of info there. now that you are rooted i would read the after rooting sections.
OK I followed the rooting guide to get rooted and It works great now. i have a ton of space and everything is absolutely smooth!. I also love that I am bending sprint over with the free wifi tethering! Those guys must be really mad at guys like you because we dump there bloatware and take advantage of their unlimited data plan lol. So After rooting I went and did the sick battery thing and that seems to run pretty smooth but like I said before i have the camera issue. So thats what I am hunting for is a way to fix that.

I guess I must have. I flashed something. super user?

ok thanx that was what i was looking for. i just do not trust video's sometimes. he made some suggestions that will not work with gingerbread.

so lets try and wipe dalvik cache and cache in recovery and see if that works. first.

if not then i would really recommend that you try mikg3.0. it is a great rom to start out with and has very little issue if any. mikg3.0 has some tweaks similar to what that app you tried. you can get it here:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/284413-roms-kernels-download-page.html. go to the sense 2.1 section to get mikg. also follow the guide on how to flash a rom. and do not forget to make a nandroid backup.

Ok. I will Give it a go. Ill read up on nandroid and run from there. Thanks a ton.

no worries. keep us posted on how it went and how you like mikg (which i know you will;)) and feel free to ask more questions if you have them.
Holy crap I am glad I backed that up. It wouldnt even start up. It took forever and It kept crashing the system (forceclose) Wow. I am going to try again but I fear that this is not for my phone. It seems to be a popular rom though. Question... I used ES file explorer to transfer the .zip file into my root over WIFI. Could this have resulted in data loss? I am without my USB cable because I left it at work. Should I even be attempting it without the usb cable? LOL I am a brave soul I guess I should have thought to ask this first since I hadnt seen anyone post about it.

MikG is a good rom to use. I'm on 3.0B2 right now and it's great.

I suppose there could have been file corruption. ES lets you check the md5 sum. If there was file loss, the sum won't match. So I'd find the hash online to see if that's it. If not, well, I suppose you could try to just download the file directly to the phone.

If the file is fine, then I'd re-wipe and try again. This rom is about four times more solid than TV superstar/actor/wrestler "The Rock" (not actual name btw...)

Okay, hope that helps. I am very tired and probably not making much sense.

it might be a bad DL of the ROM file.. but 99% of the time..
you just need to wipe the phone really good.

wipe: all data.. cache.. dalvik...
do it 3 time .. in secession.. dont ask why, just do it. :P

the other phantom issue is with Clockwork .. are you using Clockwork? or Am-Ra?
Am-Ra is more solid... simple.. direct to the point! dont mess with ROM managers if you are having issues.
