Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

so i added a new section to the guide that covers modifications. this is stil a work wip. i will add some more mods to the guide, but it is a start. if you would like a mod added to the guide please let me know.

Modifications

ok so now that you are rooted you can now modify whatever you want to. so here are some things you can try out. but keep in mind that most mods and themes are rom specific and may not work on the rom you have. also if you try any mods on an already themed rom that it will break the theme.

so this is for sense 1.0 roms:
[MOD][HACK][TWEAK] Your One-Stop-Shop for Gingerbread 4.54.651.1 Mods, Hacks & Tweaks - xda-developers

to theme your rosie (the dock with the app drawer, phone, and personalize):
[MOD] Rosie Remapped PHONE|APPS|CUSTOM + Independent [OTA 4.24+4.53] - xda-developers

this is if you want a DIY rosie theme:
[HOW-TO][DIY] What You Know about Rosie? - xda-developers

of course these are just the taste of what is out there. and also like i said most mods are rom specific. to find more themes i would go to EVO 4G Themes and Apps - xda-developers or read the op for the rom, usually there will be a link for themes for the rom.

ok guys,
so i added another guide to the guide. thanx to rxpert83, the guide now has a troubleshooting section. but unfortunately the guide is so big now that it has reached its max allowed characters. it actually went way over the allotted amount so i had to take out the new modification section. i may create a thread for mods itself at a later time.

So, I've made it to the last part and then I get this:

The file is supposed to be about 289k, right? I've downloaded it several times to make sure its not corrupted and it seems to be consistent.
Any ideas?
This isn't even my phone but its gotten so frustrating that now its personal and I have to figure this out. My own LG Ally sure was a lot easier to root :p Thanks for all the incredibly hard work you people have put into this.

that sounds about right as far as size goes. not sure why you are getting bad install aborted error. but just so you know, this file is to help unlock nand so that you can make changes to the current rom. if you plan on flashing to a different rom like mikg you can just download the rom and flash it. all custom roms will have the superuser app cooked in.

so if you plan on sticking with the stock rom then we can try and troubleshoot what is going on or you can try and flash another rom because the stock rom is way boring and there are many awesome roms out that are waaaaaaaaay better then stock. like i said try mikg2.61 if you want to try out a rom.

you are right about the Iphone part..

But maybe you can help with my rooting?

I have no idea what i need to download to root or anything and i run on 2.3.3 so if you know anything it is helpful!

Rooting..
first .. it aint hard!!! scale of 1 to 10.. 1 being, boil an egg; to 10 being, build a kit car. this is a 3 - 4.

2nd.. i dont know your level of confidence in your ability to follow tech instructions. just read and read ... and double check your understanding.

3rd.. just do it!

xda-developers is a great source of tech info.

Rooting basics: [GUIDE]HipKat

Also, I'd like to add the guides that are on this site, very easy to follow...

http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html

Rooted phones can install higher level software (root-only), and you can completely change the phone around. If you really want an iphone feel, maybe check out MIUI. It's a bit of a more complex rom (compared to sense), but it has a custom launcher that looks and works like an improved iOS interface (IMO).

Hope that helps...

I am finally rooted... now my next question is what are roms and kernels? What do they do for my phone? Thanx for all the help here. You guys are great.

Your ROM is your phone software. You can think of it as an operating system on your computer. Custom ROM's have lots of goodies that the stock ones dont... Such as hacked sprint hotspot, bloat removed, faster, snappier, ect. You can even get updated versions of sense (our evos are stuck at sense 1.0 stock, but with custom ROMS you can get sense 3.5!) or even the newest version of android ICS!

Kernels are a go-between for the hardware of the phone and the software of the ROM. They control how much power goes where and when it is needed. Custom kernels allow you to overclock your CPU for speed, underclock it or undervolt it for battery life, ect.

What Rxpert said :P

Rxpert speaking of undervolting, would I need SetCPU for that? I want to do that for battery purposes. I prefer longevity over how quick something moves. I'm on the MikG 2.59 ROM with the latest universal GoldenMonkey kernel and it gets awesome battery life. Am I able to undervolt it or does that happen when the person makes the kernel?

I followed everything worked without a problem. I cant figure out where to go to delete the "bloatware".

I dont see /system/app anywhere

I would not delete bloatware like that. There are two ways you should do that. One is to use titanium backup and first freeze the bloatware. Once you know your phone is stable then you can dele them. You just need to be careful what you delete. That is why TV is great because you can always unfreeze things if things go wrong.

Second, you can always just flash a rom. Most roms have the bloatware removed. I would try mikg 2.61. It is fast, smooth, and stable. Plus it had sense 2.1 and sense 3.0 which are amazing.way better then stock.

I've been reading the guide for awhile now.. some of it seems above my level i am new to this tech stuff, and i also am afraid to make my phone a nice new paper weight i do have insurance but i'm not sure if they would be happy with me trying to root my phone, even though i hear that Sprint people usually don't care or even offer to root your phone themselves.

Thank you for the help guys i will just take more time to decide!

there are some good youtube vid on rooting too.. just search.

just start asking questions.. when you hit a hard spot in your reading...(just try to do a little search first because most of your questions has been asked before.)

:)

I would stay away from videos. They are great to get the idea but we have had to help several people who were doing the video thing to get them back on track.

As 9to5 cynic stated we have a very good guide on the issue. It is very easy to follow along with and of course we are always here to help if for any reason you have an issue.

I personally recommend reading the guide 3 times and having everything your going to need downloaded.

As far as the comment do a little search at XDA that is a very big deal . Here however our philosophy is simple. You have a question ask. The only dumb question is one not asked.

but the videos are good to let noobs know how it is not as hard as it sounds when you are reading the instructions

Yes and I stated that. Just was advising not to try and root by "going along with" the video many of the people that have used that route has inevitably missed something then come in here all panicky cause they didn't know what they were doing. We love to help people but it's very hard when they are frustrated
