Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

Clearing storage did nothing different. It stills does steps 1 and 3 then restarts and tries it again. Says Checking... then wrong zipped image, checks for pc36diag.nbh and then back to the beginning.

so i finally decided that i want to try to root my phone...

so...seeing a thread called rooting for dummies, i figured i had a shot...

well..not so much..as a MacOs user, i started with EarlyMon's part...well, the links to xda in his part are sure not for "dummies"..

I have NO computer programming experience whatsoever.
I got thru setting up a Vm on my mac, and got Ubuntu 10.04 on an running, but from there i got lost...building "CM" ??? getting SDK and adb???

ugh, i have a Masters degree, figured i was smart enough to get this, but...alas, am i done for?

So I reach out to you the community to see if someone can break this down further for me, so i can actually get this done without creating a paperweight....

One question i have is, is linux only required for me to get revolutionary on to root, or doi need the VM/linux to do all things root or can this be done natively via my mac? if so, i can likely get revolutionary on my phone via my PC at work, then i may be all set.

thanks to anyone who can help in advance

If you can use a windows pc just follow the rooting for dummys guide for the root. I believe everything else you can do from the mac. The only thing ive heard is with the mac u have to make sure that roms or files u download for the phone dont get unziped before u transfer them to the phone,

What about the "phone" part of my phone. Will I need to get the phone reactavated with Sprint after I root? Or will it know it is an active Sprint headset? Thanks. The guide looks great!

not sure exactly what you mean, but when you root your phone you are not doing anything as far as sprint is concern. all you are really doing is turning your securities off (s-off) so that you can gain access to the system partition (unlocking nand). and that is what revolutionary does. it does not touch the fact that the phone is on sprint. however, once you are rooted you can flash the evo to boost or metro if you like. but that is a whole other thing.

Thanks that is what I wanted to know. I hate talking to Sprint so I just wanted to make sure I did not have to call them and get it re-activated.

Downloaded the two files in the unroot section, and after moving the first to the root SD directory, and renaming PC36IMG.zip, the bootloader recognizes it, inspects it, then provides me with a list like this:

Supersonic EVT2-2 Ship S-off
HBOOT- 2.15.0001
MICROP-041f
Touch panel - atmelco3_16ac
Radio-2.15.00.0808
Mar 8 2011,17:02:15
Hboot
parsing SD zip
1 radio_v2
2 recovery
3 bootloader
4 wimax
5 splash1
6 boot
7 userdata
8 system

Do you want to start update?

I chose yes, at which point 3 reads OK, 1 reads "updating" and as soon as the red progress bar for 'radio' updating completes, the phone power cycles, and returns to the HBOOT screen. It then does the "SD Checking" and loads the PC36IMG.ZIP again, but this time, upon completion, it dumps me to a menu for:

Bootloader
Reboot
Reboot bootloader
power down.

And, the S is now S-ON. Seems I'm stuck.

It has been a while since I had to unroot one of my evos, but I think you need to flash the s-on zip first in recovery then run the pc36img file in hboot. Is your hboot 2.15? If so, that is not a US Evo but I believe it is a Japanese one. Make sure you have the correct files if it is in fact a Japanese Evo. I might be wrong but I think all of the US ones were 2.16 unrooted and 6.16 rooted.

Thanks for the quick reply. No, mine is a US bought (sprint store) phone. The data I quoted above is after running the first zip file in the unroot instructions.

It's clearly showing 2.15 in the hboot screen now - along with s-on. I re-downloaded the PC36IMG_SuperSonic_GB_Sprint_WWE_4.54.651.1_Radio_2.15.00.0808_NV_2.15_release_220182_signed.zip" file, and tried it again, with the same results.

What makes we worry, is that after running this file (and only this file), the phone now shows s-on. Is there any harm in running the s-on zip now?

If you have s-on, then you should be unrooted. Have you rebooted the phone? Did you have to log back into your google account? Also you can check and see if you have the SuperUser app still in your app drawer. It should NOT be there if the PC36IMG file worked correctly

No, that's my problem. After rebooting during the initial pc361mg file (right after radio update), it comes back to the bootloader screen everytime. I can get to the recovery mode (CWR) but nothing else.

In the unrooting guide there is a RUU exe that you run from the computer
It will give you stock recovery and rom as if the phone was new. The PC36IMG RUU never worked for me.

you can also use this ruu:RUU_SuperSonic_GB_Sprint_WWE_4.54.651.1_Radio_2.15 .00.0808_NV_2.15_release_220182_signed.exeto get you the latest ota stock rom and stock recovery. just connect the phone via usb and run the exe file on your computer.

But that implies that the phone is up and running, connected to the PC, no? At this point I'm either in the bootloader or recovery screen. I'm just now trying a nandroid restore from before the attempt.

I believe you do need to be able to boot .At this point if you cant restore a nand you may need to keep trying the PC36IMG ruu. Make sure it is exactly named PC36IMG.zip. windows will hide the ext and sometimes people have added an extra .zip.

Ok, from within CWR, I did a restore of a nandroid backup I created just prior to attempting the unroot. It actually worked - bringing my MIUI OS back up.

I then rebooted into the bootloader to see if the S was on or off... it's showing on! Now, I'm going to run the RUU...

Your PC should recognize the phone is plugged in if it is in recovery mode. In bootloader it will not see it unless you have hboot version .76 ENG and are using fastboot commands.

Now that MIUI is up and running, and S-ON is shown at the bootloader screen, I would have thought that root is gone. But, SU still works, and Root Explorer/ES Explorer still show 'root access'.

So, in summary, running the step-one PC36IMG file (200+MB) crashed/rebooted after only updating the bootloader and radio... I had to restore my nandroid backup, but despite S-ON, I still have root.

I'm now going to try the second step first, then run the RUU.
