Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

I'm in the process of unrooting but I cannot get s-on. I've followed the unrooting guide step by step several times without success. Here is the information for my evo:

hboot: 6.17.0001
radio: 2.15.00.0808
hardware: 0003
software: 4.54.651.1

I'd appreciate any help the forum can offer. Thanks in advance.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!
did you try the ruu first? did you name the file correctly? it needs to be PC36IMG with no zip in the name as windows hides the extnesions. did you put the file on the root of the sd card? that means not in any folder, just on the card.

what hhave you tried and what happens when you did it. we need more info as to what you are doing so that we can help you.

Thanks. Yes, I tried the ruu first. I was able to flash back to a stock rom and receovery. Then, I followed the sequence to get s-on. Didn't work. I then tried doing the sequence to get s-on before flashing to the stock rom and recovery. Still, no s-on.

I've been careful to name the zip files according to the instructions and have placed them in the root of the sd card, but no success.

It seems that my only issue is getting the s-on because I have no encountered any issues with actually going back to a stock rom by running the ruu.

Hope this helps.

ok what happens when you run the s-on file? does hboot find the file? does it ask you to update?

ocnbrze, hey, I'm hoping you can help me. I have rooted all my phones in the past, although with step by step dummy guides, but I don't know what I'm doing wrong with the Evo. I did the revolutionary thing but it just stays stuck on "waiting for device..." So I manually entered my serial number into the Revolutionary site and got the beta key but I'm guessing that's useless to me with the DOS screen stuck on "waiting for device..." I don't know what to do, can you help me? Thanks.

Do you have debugging on? Does your computer recognize your Evo when you plug it in? Is your phone set to Charge Only?

My phone was not set to charge only, because I thought I had to have it set at disk drive in order to run the revolutionary thing. I don't know if debugging is on, I don't know where to look to check. Yes, the pc sees the phone, that's how I d/l the revolutionary thing on it.

I have restarted phone several times and it still gets stuck on "waiting for device"

And thanks so much for the reply.

It needs to be set to charge only.
For Debugging on, go to Settings>applications>development and make sure its checked. If both are good, try and run it again.

Ok, I figured out the debugging thing. I looked everywhere and couldn't find it but I googled and figured it out.

Edit: Ok, I achieved S-Off, so I'll continue on with the rest of the instructions, and hopefully, I'll be successful. Thanks so much!

Glad you got it. I would suggest following the instructions to switch to Amon RA recovery once you get everything going. It is a better option in my opinion and is more consistent than Clockwork Mod. The instructions are in the Rooting For Dummies Guide- GB Edition.

I have no idea what that really means, but ok, I will do it. The instructions are part of the guide at the beginning of this thread?

Thanks again for helping me through my total dumb*** moment. :-)

Now hopefully I can get pdanet to work and I can tether my tablet. Then life will be good again.

It is in the guide at the beginning of the thread. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. As far as tethering, most custom roms have the Sprint Hotspot unlocked so there is no need for pdanet if you prefer to use wireless. We can get you on a stable custom rom with the bloat removed and the hotspot unlocked.

Recovery is a small operating system that allows you to flash roms/themes/mods. Amon RA is recommended by most Evo users due to it being more reliable than Clockwork Mod Recovery. My rom of choice is MikG 3.0. You can find the download link here under the Sense 2.1+3.0 roms. There are instructions in the rooting guide for wiping and flashing.
We can walk you through it if need be.

Not, yet. I had to make dinner. I'm about to get started on the rest of the instructions, but I don't see anything about RUU in the "life after root section"

Sorry, ignore that post. It was in response to EclecticTastes. He is trying to unroot his phone.

So step 2 of the life after root says: if you want to use a kernel:SetCPU for Root Users

What is the difference between kernel and rom? (I think I need a dumberer guide)

The rom is the operating system that your phone operates on. A kernel is a sub system that controls how your battery is used. Custom kernels allow you to slow your phone down to save battery or speed it up to gain performance(but cost you battery life). For now, I would recommend you bypass the kernels until you get comfortable making backups and flashing. Most roms come with the stock kernel so there is no need to flash one yet.

ok, I d/l the amon to my pc. Is this another one where I have to put it directly on the sd card and unzip it there? Also, can I delete the revolutionary file off my sd card now?

Thanks!

You want to put in on the root(top level, not in a folder) of your sdcard. You do not want to unzip it. It needs to be in a zip format. Once you put in on your sdcard, you need to rename it exactly PC36IMG. Do not put the .zip in the name or you will end up naming it .zip.zip as windows hides extensions by default and it will not work. When you are done, reboot your phone to bootloader and let it scan for the file. When it asks if you want it to update, hit volume up to tell it to update.

To get to the bootloader you need to power off your phone then hold volume down+power til the white bootloader screen comes up. If it boot normally you need to go to Settings>Power and uncheck fastboot then try and get to the bootloader again.

As far as the file on your sdcard, are you referring to the SU file?

are you talking about the su file? if so once it is flashed you can delete it. and the guide has a switching recoveries section that will guide you through the process, but yes you have to rename the file and put it on the sd card.
