Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

are you talking about the su file? if so once it is flashed you can delete it. and the guide has a switching recoveries section that will guide you through the process, but yes you have to rename the file and put it on the sd card.

I have both the su file and the revolutionary file on the SD card, so I will delete both, thanks.

In the instructions is says to always have a nandroid backup on my computer. Question: when I make a backup (which it's doing right now) does it save it onto the SD card automatically and then I can just copy it over to my pc?

Thanks for walking me through all this! You're very kind.

no worries, and yes they are saved on your sd card. it is found in a folder called nandroid. inside that folder is another folder called something like HT0CVHL01139 (it might be different then yours). inside that folder will be your nandroid backup. it is usually listed by date.

you can also rename them if you want. i usually add the name of the rom to the name of the nandroid. just make sure not use any spaces or weird symbols.

This may be another dumb question, but once I install the Mik rom, how do I know which themes will work on it? I'm looking over the theme forum at XDA but that forum is kind of a mess and they don't seem to be organized by mod. Is there a better place to look or did you just instinctively know what would work best?

no such thing as a dumb question (except for one that is not asked).

i would go here for mik themes:MikG v3.xx Themes, Mods and Tweaks. just make sure that you flash the theme for mikg3.0.

also if you look at the top of the evo rooting forum you will see a sticky for roms, themes, and kernels. inside is a link to some of the members here who have themed mikg. check it out.

edit: here is the link:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/469133-theme-info-evo-4g.html

Go here and you can see what is available for MikG 3.0. There are alot of them and most have screen shots so that you can get an idea of what they look like. In order to download, you will have to register on the site but it is easy and free.

Ok, hopefully last question... since I installed the Mik rom, now Titanium is no longer showing up in the app drawer. If I go to applications/manage applications, it's there, but the actual app isn't showing up in the app list, so I can't open it. Any ideas?

that is probably the pro key you purchased. you will need to also download the actual titanium backup from the market.

It seems after I flashed to Mik, Swype is no longer on my phone and when I went into the market it's not there anymore. Any ideas? I'm not sure I can live without Swype. :-)

well i'm not sure if mikg comes with swype or not. when you go into settings/languages and keyboards/is the option for swype there?

if not then it is not included with the rom. you can probably flash a different rom and then use titanium backup to back the app up and then restore back to mikg and use titanium to restore swype. also i would sign up to get the swype beta at swpye's website. that way you can get swype on any rom you want.

Thanks so much! I got it from the website. I didn't know you could get apps outside of the market. LOL

yep you can get apps outside the market. they are called third party apps. they are usually in apk form. all you need is a file manager app. i really like root explorer or you could also use es file manager as well. both are in the market. to install the apk you will need to move it to the card then use the file manager on your phone and navigate to the apk and install it.

you can also do the same thing by using a file manager to pull apk's out of a rom and install it on another rom as well.

Mik must have come with ES file manager b/c I don't think I've ever seen that on there before and that's exactly how I installed the file after I got the email from Swype. That's pretty cool. It just never occurred to me to get apps that way. How do you find 3rd party apps? I guess that's why I always get them from the market... it's just easier to search.

Mik came with alot of really cool stuff built in, what a really nice rom. My only complaint is that the themes for it are extremely limited. I had a Samsung Moment (for about 10 minutes, I hated that phone) and the themes available after I rooted were so cool. I remember one that turned all my screen icons into translucent bubbles, so they didn't block the wallpaper. I loved that one.

But I really can't thank you guys enough. Without this forum and helpful people, I would still be in the dark with no tether. So thanks so much!

well, "rooting for dummies" is just not dumbed down enoughh for me...(LOL)

I think i am at the first grade level of computer understanding at this point...

after failing at understanding how to set up this root on a mac using virtualbox/linux, i turned to using my work computer (PC)...

however i am yet again stuck...
in the part about downloading this "http://goo-inside.me/superuser/su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip"
the web page just shows a countdown and then nothing to download...

what am i missing? i feel soooo stupid!!
anywhere else to get this file?

help please...

or if anyone with mac knowledge cares to walk me through setting me up that would be appreciated too

ok your browser might be blocking the popup window for the download. you can try using another browser. if you can't you can give me a sec and i will put it a dropbox link for you. or you can flash a rom. if you go to that route i would suggest that you flash MikG v3.0 [12/17/2011]. it is a super sweet rom and it will su cooked into it.

but if you go that route then i would suggest that you switch recoveries to amon ra and that you follow the flashing section as well.

no worries. just do not blame me if you get addicted to this stuff like i am:D
as for third party apps, there really is not many out there that i recommend. you could check over on xda's EVO 4G Themes and Apps - xda-developers for them. but the main use like i said is that you can pull apk's out of most roms and then use a file manager to install them.

what exactly does it say? does it look like this:xda-developers - View Single Post - [ROOT] EVO 4G Gingerbread 2.3 Root Tutorial

do you have s-off? if you do then you can just install a custom recovery.

Trying to root a evo with 1.6 hboot it ran revolutionary after cleaning up sytem it sits at waiting for fastboot. The phone has been in the bootloader for aboat ten minutes. This is the second time i ran it and its doing the same thing. I dont remember it taking this long the other times i ran it. ANy ideas?

do you mean waiting for device? if so do you have usb debugging turned on? do you have the drivers installed? does the oc recognize the phone. do you have the phone set to charge only?

and do you have s-off?

Have been following this forum for some time now and first off would like to thank all the Senior members who are really great on answering questions. I have been wanting to root my phone for some time but "bricking it" always creeps into my mind holding me back. I have read, read and re-read this forum, along with many others on how to, and how to un-root if necessary, but that darn brick is in my head. Any thoughts on getting me to take that leap of faith.......lol. Thanks.

Bricks i have heard of.

1) battery charge too low or pulling battery while flashing radios.

2) Some kind of boot loop while folk are on cm7, not sure what kernel.

3) Flashing a rom for the WRONG phone.

4) Some sort of issue with some version of TWRP recovery, not sure which version.

pretty much avoidable circumstances. The few on cm7 probably a very small percentage of users of a very popular rom.

Other than that, the guys in here have a pretty good track record of helping folk un-tangle other sorts of messes folk get themselves in to.

You have read how much fun we have messing with our phones, otherwise... :p

No it went through the steps found device and after the shpeal about flowers or whatever while it was rebooting to fastboot it just sat there and said waiting for fastboot. I ended up switching to.my other computer and it worked right away. That's like the fourth EVO I've rooted first time it did that. False alarm.
