Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

Just rooted my EVO thanks to this guide. Previously had a Hero that was rooted. I'm looking for a good stable ROM for my EVO. Any suggestions as there seems to be a lot of ROMs?

MikG 3.0 is the rom of choice right now. That may change as soon as they get the ICS roms stable and everything working but Mik won't be to long to get one of those out as well I don't think.

So I am rooted and running MikG's 3.0 ROM.

THANKS EVERYONE!

My HBoot version is still 0.79.0000

I used unrevoked v 3.32 to root. It uses ClockworkMod 2.6.0.1. I thought it used an older version of SuperUser, but I now see it is version 3.0.7 so maybe it updated itself.

My WiMax keys made it and I have backed them up using an XDA Developer method which uses ADB, but I have no clue how to restore them if I shoould ever need to do so. I think the newer versions of ClockworkMod or Amon Ra will back them up as part of backing up an installed ROM.

My radio is still the same: baseband version 2.05.00.06.10

So my questions are: should I try to update my bootlet (which I think is not the engineering bootlet (as that is 0.79.0000))?

Should I try to update ClockworkMod (or change to Amon RA)?

Should I try to update my radio?

yeah hboot .76 had the eng bootloader. i would just keep your bootloader. unrooting is much easier with unrevoked then revolutionary.

i would update to amon ra, however. clockwork mod has issues and does not wipe well. i have had 0 issues with amon ra. but if you decide to stay with clockwork mod make sure that you have 2.6 as that one is compatible with both edify and amend scripts so you will have no issues when trying to flash zip files. clockwork mod 3 and up only supports edify and you will then have problems trying to flash certain zip files like vr superwipe.

the radios is up to you. some people have reported that they were getting better signal but for others like me i have seen no improvement when i updated. if you do update your radios, make sure that you have plenty of battery. also never pull the battery out while it is updating the radios. that is a sure way of bricking your phone. also i would recommend that you do the radio combo.

anymore questions please feel free to ask.

do you have usb debugging on? do you have the drivers installed correctly? is your antivirus turned off? also make sure that any program like pda net that can communicate with your phone is installed. also make sure that you set the phone on charge only.

I've been reading this & other forums & watching lots you tube videos on rooting. I'm finally ready to root my evo. The only thing is how do i save all my contacts, pics, music, apps etc. before doing a factory reset? also is revolutionary the best root or is unrevoked? just not comportable with giving out ssn#.

well for your contacts you just make sure that they are linked to google that way they are saved onto the cloud. and when you flash a rom all you would have to do is sign in to google and they will be synched to your phone automatically. pics and music are saved to the sd card so no worries there. apps you can use mybackup pro. but really when you root you will not loose and data. all revolutionary does is turn your securities off and gove you a custom recovery (clockwork mod).

and as far as which one you will use will depend on what your hboot is. so power off (you may have turn fastboot off. settings/app/uncheck fastboot) then press and hold power+vol down)

if your hboot is 2.16 or 2.15 then use this guide:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html

if your hboot is 2.10 or lower then use this guide:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies.html

***WARNING*** CURRENT ROOTED USERS, DO NOT UNROOT AND APPLY THE OTA UPDATE...

Well I made a dumb move and unrooted and then applied the OTA update. Part of the OTA update included updating my HBOOT was to 2.18.0001, and now I can't "re-root" using Revolutionary. DOH !! Needless to say, I found out the hard way what unrooting and applying an OTA update can do to one's future rooting ability.

Can anyone guess how long it will take the Revolutionary Team to crack the newest HBOOT (2.18.0001), and re-enable ROOT for myself and anyone else who grabbed this latest update?

ok guys i forgot that i had the PC36IMG ruu to unroot in the megupload site so.....the gov. took down that site:mad::(. it just uploaded the file to rapidshare. hopefully the gov. will not take that one down. if anything i have it in my dropbox account.

Did you try rerooting with revolutanry?? not saying you should because we have no idea if it will bork the phone but if you did try i was wondering what happened. did it tell you the hboot was wrong or not reconise the phone or any thing like that? I dont recomend you try but if you already did i would like to know what happened.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!
sorry to hear that friend. yeah that is one thing that every users of rooted phones should know. never ever accept an ota or even unroot and accept the ota. all you need to do is wait for the devs to cook up a rom and you can just flash that and you are updated. in fact there is like 3 or 4 rooted stock versions of the ota already out.

and as far as how long? that will depend on the revolutionary team and if they are able to find another exploit. as time goes by it will get harder and harder to find an exploit. it took the devs like 3 or 4 months before they were able to root gingerbread so who knows when or if they are able to find another exploit.

i would also like to know as well. even though the hboot version is not listed does not mean that it will not work. give it a try and let us know. if it does not work it most likely will not do anything except to let you know that it will not work. and if it does not work then i would go to their IRC chat that is linked in their wiki and ask the team about the new hboot and if they have plans on trying to gain root.

just a note on this- I just went on their IRC chat thing and it mentions at the top of the screen that asking for future plans or ETAs is a bannable offence... Lol.

These developer guys really hate being questioned on that stuff apparently. Cyanogenmod is the same way. I'd love to hear if anyone's tried using the revolutionary method with 2.18 as well though!
