Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

DAMNIT!!!! Cracked my screen so unrooted. Took it in they wont replace it. When I unrooted it went to 2.18.0001.

I swear, three months ago I rooted a gingerbread using Revolution. I picked 2.16 and did it anyway and it worked. Now the Revolution software checks my version and stops me from trying it. "this is not compatible".

WTF Oh yea btw. Regular rom by the company really really sucks. I mean really. You dont realize how awesome these other Roms are till they're gone. wtf OTA can F off.

This thread is 40 pages. Did anyone notice, who has been following this thread, that the latest ota can be rooted?

Hey all, new to the forums. I only recently rooted my phone and am currently running 2.3.3, hboot 2.16. I want to upgrade to 2.5.3 but am not quite sure if I'm supposed to follow the same steps as last time (from the first page of this thread) or if the links there are updated. Could someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

okay just to make sure but you do have s-off? because your hboot, if you used revolutionary, should be hboot 6.16 afterwards. and if you do have s-off with a custom recovery then all you will have to do is flash a rom that has the update.

so here you go:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/487182-rom-stock-4-67-651-3-new-ota-update-rom.html

just flash one of these and you will have been updated. but these are just stock roms. i would really recommend that you flash mikg3.0. it is a waaaaaay better rom then stock. very fast and stable. plus it has sense 2.1 and sense 3.0 cooked in.

i would also use the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html. it has instructions on how to flash a rom.

So I rooted my phone successfully but now when I try to setup my Gmail it keeps saying that my username and password dont match even tho I know theyre correct, I tried the factory reset thing 8-10 times already and still nothing works... Any help will be appreciated thanks

Hello all, I’m new to the site as well as the ROOTING process. I recently completed the update (OTA- 2.18) on my HTC EVO 4G thus screwing me out of the “ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition, Revolutionary”. Does this new method provided by “ocnbrze and captain throwback” do the same thing as the Revolutionary process does? Would someone be able to tell which method was used (not a tech guy)? Is there a way to remove/uninstall/delete the latest OTA update to allow me to use the process designed by Revolutionary? Any light that someone could shed on this matter would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!
Try running the ruu.exe that is listed in the op towards the bottom of the unrooting section.

Hello,

I am trying to flash my software update (4.67.651.3) on my rooted HTC EVO 4g and I am following your instructions. How ever it seems that ZZZVR_SUPERWIPE.zip. is no longer available. Anything else you suggest to use? It would be of great help.

Thanks.

damn i really need to go thru the guide again and weed out any megaupload links.
ok just to be sure, you are not accepting the ota but merely flashing a stock rooted version in recovery correct? if so then here is the vr superwipe:http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8709935/ZZZVR_SUPERWIPE.zip

and just in case do not accept the ota as it most likely will unroot you or brick your phone.

I'm stuck, I used the rooting technique and everything was working great. My screen was acting all kinds of crazy so I unrooted (also using the guide) and took the phone in. Now I've tried to reroot using the same revolutionary. After asking me the y or n question it quickly says fail and some other stuff I can't read fast enough before it closes the window.

Next I factory reset my phone to see if that would work it didn't. I thought when I went in that they had done the update because when I choose to update it says no updates, but this is what it says on about phone.

version: 2.3.3
baeband 2.15.00.0808
software: 4.54.651.1

edit: After playing with my phone some more, I still have s-on, but I still have super user and I downloaded wifi tether and it works. Is sprint going to be able to see I'm using tether if I have s-on?

any help would be great, I really miss the wifi tether.

what is ur hboot? And you have s-off or s-on? How did you try to root?

Sorry for the delay in getting back. And thanks for your response ocnbrze. You're right, I'm running 6.16 not 2.16 (oops) hboot, and I do have s-off. I followed the steps on the gingerbread dummies guide when I first rooted, so I do have the clockwork mod recovery and nandroid backup.

I looked at the mikg3.0 rom you suggested and I'd like to try it. Does it include the OTA update or do I need to flash mikg and then the OTA? Also, is there any advantage to doing a Titanium backup (as mentioned in the dummies guide) vs the Nandroid backup? I thought Nandroid basically clones your whole install, or do I have that wrong?

And just to make sure, the review I saw indicated mikg3 has everything working, 4G, all radios, etc. Is there anything that it breaks?

Thanks again for the help!

Ok I recommend switching to amon ra 2.3 for you recovery choice, there should be a section in the guide for it.

MikG isn't even based on the Evo, so no it's not based off the latest OTA it's better. Now that you are rooted NEVER, I REPEAT NEVER, NEVER, EVER, accept an OTA or unroot to get an OTA, you will likely lose root and never be able to get it back.

Titanium backup is for backing up your apps and restoring them after flashing roms, nandroid is a snapshot of your phone at it's current state and is used for when you botch a flash or something. They are both your friends.

Radios aren't included in roms, they are flashed seperately.

Of course something can break the rom, the user. ;) Did you have something specifically in mind you wanted to try? A lot of things can break any rom, flashing stuff not built off the rom, apps, themes, etc etc.

ps. Did I mention never accept an OTA. :p
pps. Welcome to the land of root and MikG! Once you go MikG you won't want/need anything else. Themikmik is a great place to learn from as well.

hboot-6.17.0001

S-ON

after unrooting I'm again trying to use revolutionary

Ok so revolutionary will not work with your hboot. You need to use the ruu found in the gingerbread dummies guide. I'm on my phone but you can find it in the root info sticky. Go to the unrooting section to get the ruu. Once you have hboot 2.16 then u can get revolutionary to work.

Thanks again ocnbrze. I'll take a look at amon ra. Luckily I knew enough to not install the latest OTA when it prompted last week, tho I'm still getting the hang of some of this.

I didn't have anything in mind as far as roms breaking things, it just seems like there are quite a few out there that don't support 4G, for example, or they can break wifi, bluetooth, etc.

Just to be clear, I'll flash mikg and then the CM-EVO_Radio-2.15.00.12.19_PRI-2.33_WiMax_NV.zip linked on themikmik.com, right?

Cheers!

Well technically that wasn't ocnbrze who typed the post you quoted...that was I, either way you are welcome. :D

Doesn't really matter the order in which you flash the rom and radio. Radio thread is here. Be sure to read and read and read about the radios because it's the only sure fire way to brick your phone. Odds are you can do just the bootloader pri/radio combo, because the wimax hasn't been updated for quite some time. Plus the bootloader method is the safest, IMO. Biggest thing is don't ever pull the battery during a radio update, nice paper weight is created when that is done. ;)

Have fun.

technically you are right, but this is my thread and that was what i would have said. :D

i would also like to add to read this:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...before-you-flash-your-radios-read-thread.html
disregard the warnings as this is what could happen. also when you install amon ra2.3 make sure to make a nandroid backup with wimax backed up and kept someplace safe. i have my very first one with wimax saved in my dropbox account and on my computer.

also check out mikg3.0 it is a much better rom then the stock one.

now go and get your flash on:D
