Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

noticed this link doesnt work anymore, anyone know where to download this.

Hmmm, I assume that was on megaupload, which Big Brother shut down. I'm on my phone or I would get you a working link.

These developer guys really hate being questioned on that stuff apparently. Cyanogenmod is the same way. I'd love to hear if anyone's tried using the revolutionary method with 2.18 as well though!

i think that some one reported that the new updated is not rootable. however there is a work around though. it uses HTC's method of unlocking the bootloader then installing a custom recovery. however, keep in mind that this does void your warranty and also will watermark your phone so that sprint will know that it was rooted. here is the thread:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/488289-root-info-hboot-2-18-0001-a.html

know the new update was for security reasons. they updated the hboot and took out carrier iq. also looks like the radios is updated as well. so all you would need to do is go here:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/487182-rom-stock-4-67-651-3-new-ota-update-rom.html. these are some of the roms that have come out with the new ota coked in. and also to get the latest radios go here:xda-developers - View Single Post - [ Radios ][ 9-5 ] All EVO Radio, WiMAX, PRI, NV & HBoot versions

I cannot get the new Radios to flash to my phone. I renamed them to PC36IMG.ZIP but it says the script cannot be found. What am I doing wrong?
 
There are ones that can be flashed in recovery as well. Check the XDA thread with all radios/wimax/PRL versions for that. Page like 320 I believe
 
hey everyone, i'm new here. i'm trying to root my phone following the tutorial at the beginning of this thread. i have been getting stuck on the part where i run revolutionary in order to get the serial number of my phone - it gets stuck on "waiting for device."

i have made sure that my phone is in debugging mode, charge only, and that i have uninstalled programs that connect to my phone such as pdanet and htc sync, and do not have antivirus software running. i have installed the drivers from the link provided here. i also did the factory reset and cleared the sd card as well. does anyone have any ideas on how to get around this? thanks!

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
does your phone connect to the pc? have you tried different cables? maybe a different pc might help as well.

thanks for the quick response. my phone connects in disk drive mode (ie: i can see the sd card's contents). i tried a different pc and no luck with that either. any other possibilities?

out of curiosity what is your hboot? power off then press and hold power+vol down. make sure that you have fastboot turned off (settings/app/uncheck fastboot). this will take you to the bootloader. the info at the top of the screen is what we want.

ok just making sure that you did not do the update as that will make rooting more difficult. revolutionary has been known to be difficult at times and easy at other times. i had difficulty with getting the beta key generated. it took like 20-30 tries and then finally it worked for whatever reason. not sure what i was doing before that that was not working. sooo. maybe get some sleep like i need to do and then try it later. not sure what else to rell you right now as you seem to have done all the right steps. it should be able to detect your phone.

ugh, i stupidly updated before i read your response. my hboot is now 2.18. am i screwed?

DAMN THAT SUCKS!!!!!:(

luckily i just finished a new guide for hboot 2.18. it is way different then revolutionary. you will still have s-on but you will be able to flash roms and kernels like evrybody else. the process will be slightly different and this will water mark your phone. thus voiding your warranty so going this route will be up to you.

did the Revolutionary (and unrevoked) methods watermark them as well? I had heard of a custom rom counter on samsung phones (at least that's the brand that was being referred to when I read about it) but hadn't heard of anything like that on the EVO....

hmm... well that's not cool...

Usually all my issues with my phone are hardware related though, and apparently my sprint store will service the phone as long as its not software-related problems . hopefully i'm alright (and I guess there's nothing I can do now if I'm not, haha)

i am glad I have not updated my h-boot. but future new phones will have this crap? I sure hope the devs can find a mod to get this thing out. :cool:

well it will depend on demand. i know on the evo 3d development stopped to find an exploit on the new update as you can pretty much do everything with the HTC method. and because the evo is now an older phone it will be that much harder to find a new exploit. so.....who knows when or even if the devs will start working on this new hboot.
 
yeah.. since my warranty on my evo.. and most evo's.... are dead.
then there really no need for it.

just the few that are still getting new evo 4Gs.. that want root..

but for future htc phones... I will want this hacked...very important to me.
