Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

technically you are right, but this is my thread and that was what i would have said. :D

i would also like to add to read this:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...before-you-flash-your-radios-read-thread.html
disregard the warnings as this is what could happen. also when you install amon ra2.3 make sure to make a nandroid backup with wimax backed up and kept someplace safe. i have my very first one with wimax saved in my dropbox account and on my computer.

also check out mikg3.0 it is a much better rom then the stock one.

now go and get your flash on:D

Yea and technically I'm sure I learned it from either you, Madlock, Frenchy, Xtremedays, etc...so.....;)

Ok so revolutionary will not work with your hboot. You need to use the ruu found in the gingerbread dummies guide. I'm on my phone but you can find it in the root info sticky. Go to the unrooting section to get the ruu. Once you have hboot 2.16 then u can get revolutionary to work.

Damn the gov't, it's a megaupload file. Anyplace else I can snag it from? When I unrooted I forgot to take off the superuser app, and I redownloaded the wifi tether. It definitely works, but since I have s-on will sprint see I'm using it?

I hate to be such a pain in the ass but that one doesn't work either.

no worries. not sure why my dropbox is not working though. let me try it again and i will also look into getting uploaded on a file sharing site. so it will be a few. you can try the ruu at the bottom of the unrooting section. this you run on the computer. make sure that your phone has usb debugging turned on and set as charge only.

I tried the one one at the bottom of the unrooting section first but it's a megaupload so the US Gov has the site down.

no worries though, take your time, and I appreciate your help.

Rooting the 2nd time is a lot tougher than rooting the first time.

actually that one is a multiupload site so the gov has not shut down that one yet. i just tried it and no problem connecting to it. and forgive me but my internet is slow right now.

Sorry I just felt my noobness really sink in. There's downloads all over that page where do I click on that's not an ad for another site? When I click on the "download file" in black boxes I either get the federal gov't page or file errors.

Nick1313 found the page you were talking about which one is the file I should get?

I did the bootloader method, safest way, IMO.

ok i just updated the guide with my dropbox account for the PC36IMG ruu for 4.54. should work now.

I really really appreciate all the help but I'm striking out all kinds of ways.

Got the download from the link above you posted earlier and now windows can not open the file it's invalid. Running windows 7.....I'm sorry I'm making this so tough on you. I am suppose to open the file on my computer with the phone plugged in usb debug and charge right? Not put it on my sd card, correct?

edit: was able to finally get it off one of the other sites and I'll try that one next

Hi guys, so please bear with me here, I am new to this rooting game and this is my first evo. I bought it off ebay and the guy told me it was rooted on gingerbread. But that is all I know. I was wondering where I should start to figure out what has been done or if I should start all over? If it is, then what would be my next steps? Im sure most of this was covered previously but there is so much to read I may have missed it. Thanks a ton, your help and patience is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forums!!! :)

I would first read this guide:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html

Skip to the life after root section, and get farmiliar with the terms, and the different screens, hboot, recovery, etc.

Once you've got a grip I would do a data / factory reset from recovery. Start from scratch.

Also go under menu / settings / about phone / software and list what it says. This way we know if you've got the stock rom or not.

If you've got any questions please let us know!! :D

What steps did you take to get unrooted? What is your current hboot?

I used the steps outlined in the Unrooting procedure on Page 1.
hboot version 2.16.0001

"yay! i have s-off but what if i need to get my phone serviced? or i hate all this rooting business and i want to go back to my boring gingerbread phone. how do i get s-on?

first we need to get a stock rom and stock recovery
1.download this file:PC36IMG_SuperSonic_GB_Sprint_WWE_4.54.651.1_Radio_ 2.15.00.0808_NV_2.15_release_220182_signed
2.rename the file to PC36IMG. again make sure that you do not add a zip as windows hides extensions.
3.connect your phone via usb to the pc and transfer the file over to the root of the sd card. also delete the previous PC36IMG file. make sure that you do not get the two files mixed up as they will be named the same.
4.power off then press and hold power+vol down.
5.hboot should see the file and will ask you to update, select yes.

to get s-on
6.download this file:PC36IMG6.17.zip
7.rename the file by deleting the numbers so that it is only PC36IMG and do not add any zip to the name as windows hides extensions.
8.transfer the zip file to the root of the sd card.
9.power off (make sure that fastboot is turned off) then press and hold power+vol down.
10.hboot should scan for it. select yes to update.
11.reboot your phone

if you have s-on then congrats you are now unrooted!"

Let me ask a better question...Why are you unrooting?

My phone is not charging correctly, so I am taking it to Sprint for service. They said they could not repair it so they are giving me another Evo and I have to give them the one I currently have.

Ok..that's definitely a good reason, just didn't want you to be unrooting just to get the OTA. Sorry I can't help much with the unrooting process. Haven't done it.

Are you back to stock rom and recovery or are those still custom? Did the bootloader find both of the PC36IMG files and ask you to update? Make sure they are named correctly if it missed one of them(no extra .zip and spelled exactly PC36IMG).

Yep back to stock rom and recovery. Should I update both PC36IMG in the same session? What I did was update the first (steps 1-5) PC36IMG (stock rom, recovery, bootloader...) in the first session. (Steps 6-11) Reboot device, changed the file name on the next PC36IMG to update. Completed the update but it still says S-off.

I did notice that my hboot changed after updating the S-On Img from 2.16.0001 to 6.17.0001. Is that normal? (Steps 6-11)

But I have tried this a number of times with no luck. Current version of Hboot right now is 2.16.0001 because I just went through the stock rom and recovery process again (Steps 1-5)

Thanks
