Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

Yep back to stock rom and recovery. Should I update both PC36IMG in the same session? What I did was update the first (steps 1-5) PC36IMG (stock rom, recovery, bootloader...) in the first session. (Steps 6-11) Reboot device, changed the file name on the next PC36IMG to update. Completed the update but it still says S-off.

I did notice that my hboot changed after updating the S-On Img from 2.16.0001 to 6.17.0001. Is that normal? (Steps 6-11)

But I have tried this a number of times with no luck. Current version of Hboot right now is 2.16.0001 because I just went through the stock rom and recovery process again (Steps 1-5)

Thanks

I am not entirely familiar with this unroot process as I have only done it myself for the unrevoked process. Not sure it would matter but have you tried running the s-on portion first then running the stock rom/recovery portion?

Are you deleting the ruu PC36IMG off the sd before using the s-on PC36IMG so you or the phone is not confused on wich is wich?

For those trying to unroot, but still have S-OFF:

I have some updated unrooting instructions here. You will need to reinstall a custom recovery through the bootloader to complete the process if you're already back on stock recovery.

Hopefully that'll get you fixed up.

EDIT: Recommended custom recovery is here.

I am running GB 2.3.5 and I unlocked bootloader. From other sources I found I now have to flash a recovery, specifically "twrp"... and then flash superuser 3.0.7. I'm a beginner at rooting so I don't want to mess anything up. It still shows "S-ON". Can anyone give me some instructions on how to flash the stuff and root my Evo? Thank you!:)

This helped out and I am now S-ON, I can take my phone back to get it serviced. I will be rooting again:) Thanks!

Do you have a link to the posts about the recovery? I have never heard of a specific recovery to allow flashing a zip file. Some older recovery version did not support both edify and amend scripts but Amon RA(recommended) and CWM support both now. If you read through the Rooting for Dummies Guide- GB Edition it has instructions and links to get your recovery and flashing the SU file.

I got it! Getting the recovery was definitely the most difficult. I guess since I have S-ON I had to use command prompt to fastboot the recovery. I flashed the Infected Eternity ROM, but unfortunately I'm having some problems with it... the browser crashes on most sites and the phone reboots when I try downloading any app. I'm going to try another ROM.

make sure that you are wiping correctly. you need to at least wipe dalvik cache, cache and data then flash the rom. what recovery are you using? i would suggest amon ra2.3 if you have not done so. also i would use the vr superwipe as well. please read the guide for instructions on how to flash a rom properly.

Noob here!!! Hello everyone! I recently had an evo4g flashed to boost mobile, i have no info on the donor phone (had the flash when i bought phone). My question is can i now root the phone without losing flash/mms capabilities and if so what is a good rom and kernel that won't mess up the flash?

yes you can root and flash roms kernels and recoverys.
as to what rom I could not tell you I like AOSP personally Im running decks gingerbread. One thing to note though after changing roms on a sense rom you will need to dial ##3282# edit then enter your spc then go to advanced and go to the bottom find the mmcs change it from the sprint one to http://mm.myboostmobile.com

On the AOSP you can not change that so you need to use sms go pro which will let you change that for that app.

I believe I wiped everything correctly. I had the TWRP recovery before, but I switched to ra supersonic. Once I did that I tried to flash superuser but it wouldn't boot, so I flashed a custom rom my friend suggested. Its MikG v 3.0 and its working perfectly. Thank you, I will read the guide so I don't make any future mistakes. Do you suggest switching recoveries?

i think you mean to say amon ra 2.3. if that is the case then that is a great recovery. and good choice in roms. and please read the guide thoroughly, there is a wealth of info that you should know.

Rooted and switched to Amon Ra recovery! Thanks for the easy tutorials! Time to remove bloatware!!!

NICE!!!! and welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

make sure that you get titanium backup first before you go deleting stuff. also make sure that you make a nandroid backup as well. they are your friend after all. tb is great because you can freeze stuff first that way if anything goes wrong you can unfreeze it. but if you find that nothing happens then you can go ahead and delete it with tb as well.

so apps do rely on each other so you have to be careful on what you delete.

To be fair, the actual name of the recovery is "RA-supersonic" - just boot into recovery and take a look at the bottom of the screen ;). It was developed by a person with the username "Amon_RA" over on XDA, which we've mostly made synonymous with the name of the recovery. And of course, 2.3 is just the latest version. There's also the continuing branch of development based on his source code, which has been modified and updated by user drellisdee @ XDA. This version adds a few more features (use of capacitive buttons, selective restores, compression, some touchscreen scrolling), but some feel these changes also come with a decrease in reliability. I tend to agree, although the convenience factor is too high for me not to use it (at least until I have any big issues). I always keep a bootloader-flashable version of 2.3 on my sdcard ready to go at all times in case of emergency, since it truly is the most reliable recovery for the Supersonic (EVO 4G).

so i wanted to just let you guys know, i tried to activate my phone with sprint, and after a few issues, i played dumb and said my phone was rooted but didnt know what that meant. they told me that i was out of luck and wasnt gonna be able to even activate the phone. so i followed your unrooting guide, quite easy i might add, and was then able to activate the phone. so now i am looking at rooting it again but i am a little bit confussed, i understand how to get s-off and the need for it, but what is with the roms? why do i need one and what is a good one to use?

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
well roms are your operating system even though android is running your phone. it is how the functions of the phone are designed. for example there are two kinds of roms. there are sense based roms. these will have the sense launcher that you should know. there are many different versions of sense as well. we have the stock sense 1.0. then there is sense 2.1, 3.0, and sense 3.5. and i'm guessing that once ICS comes out that maybe it will be sense 4.0.

then you have aosp (android open source project) roms. these roms do not have the sense launcher and its widgets. it is pretty much pure android. you will have to pick a launcher of your choice like adw, launcher pro, or go launcher are very popular.

anyways i would start out with mikg3.0. by far the best rom out there now. it is a combination of sense 2.1 and sense 3.0.

hope that helps.

Thanks. One other question, in your how-to, you said to switch to the amon-ra recovery you say to delete the pc36img on the sd card. but where does the amon-ra recovery go? and where can i find it so i can store it?

once you have recovery installed the PC36IMG file is not needed anymore as hboot has used the file to load into the phone. so it is safe to either delete the file or rename it. otherwise every time you go into the bootloader, it will ask you to update.

as far as where does the recovery go? well there are two mini os that runs along with android os. you have hboot and recovery. so the file you used is needed to add or change the existing recovery.

sorry not really sure i answered your question or not.

I was wondering does amon-ra create another pc36ing file that I can store. I guess what I'm really asking is what is the file created by amon-ra that should be saved

It doesn't create a file, it creates recovery for you. Not real sure what you are asking.

If you want to keep that pc36img file just create a folder on your SDcard called recovery and stick it in there.

ok i think you are talking about a nandroid backup. if so the nandroid backup does not come in the form of a PC36IMG file. when you make a nandroid backup you should have at least one nandroid backup that has wimax backed up. this file is then stored in a folder called nandroid on your sd card. andit is this file that you should save on to your computer and even in the cloud like dropbox.

the PC36IMG file is only used to install amon ra 2.3 and is not needed after it is done doing its thing.

technically you are right, but this is my thread and that was what i would have said. :D

i would also like to add to read this:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...before-you-flash-your-radios-read-thread.html
disregard the warnings as this is what could happen. also when you install amon ra2.3 make sure to make a nandroid backup with wimax backed up and kept someplace safe. i have my very first one with wimax saved in my dropbox account and on my computer.

also check out mikg3.0 it is a much better rom then the stock one.

now go and get your flash on:D

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the great help you've offered here. These forums are outstanding and the help is top-notch. I've got all my files downloaded, have switched to amon ra and made my nandroid backup. [Edited because I misread the guide... lol]

Also, once I've wiped dalvik, cache, etc., run superwipe, and flashed MikG3.0, do I just reboot and then flash the Tweaks-Update-Evo_signed.zip? (I know I could post over there too, but since I've already got this thread running, I hoped you wouldn't mind... :))

Thanks for all the great help you've offered here. These forums are outstanding and the help is top-notch. I've got all my files downloaded, have switched to amon ra and made my nandroid backup. The instructions recommend using superwipe, but I'm unclear on how to actually run it? Do I just choose "Flash Zip from SD Card" and select the zzzvr_superwipe.zip file or is there a separate process for running it?

this is a forum after all so we really do not mind at all.

and yes with the superwipe you will flash it by choosing flash from sd card you should wipe first then flash the superwipe then flash the rom.

i would wait on the tweaks until you know that everything is working first. so reboot after you flash mikg3.0. sign in and make sure nothing is wrong then go back and make a nandroid backup and then flash the tweaks. you will only need to wipe dalvik cache and cache then flash the tweaks.
