Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

No it went through the steps found device and after the shpeal about flowers or whatever while it was rebooting to fastboot it just sat there and said waiting for fastboot. I ended up switching to.my other computer and it worked right away. That's like the fourth EVO I've rooted first time it did that. False alarm.
Sounds like maybe your antivirus was on and interfearing Just a thought.

Have been following this forum for some time now and first off would like to thank all the Senior members who are really great on answering questions. I have been wanting to root my phone for some time but "bricking it" always creeps into my mind holding me back. I have read, read and re-read this forum, along with many others on how to, and how to un-root if necessary, but that darn brick is in my head. Any thoughts on getting me to take that leap of faith.......lol. Thanks.
yeah bricking your phone will rooting is is pretty hard to do. the program itself is pretty easy to do. revolutionary does all the work for you. i think the toughest part is getting the beta key to work (it took me like 20 tries before it worked.) read this guide before attempting to root your phone. any questions you have please feel free to ask any questions.

weird well glad it worked for you. how many evos do you own? lol

Mik must have come with ES file manager b/c I don't think I've ever seen that on there before and that's exactly how I installed the file after I got the email from Swype. That's pretty cool. It just never occurred to me to get apps that way. How do you find 3rd party apps? I guess that's why I always get them from the market... it's just easier to search.

Mik came with alot of really cool stuff built in, what a really nice rom. My only complaint is that the themes for it are extremely limited. I had a Samsung Moment (for about 10 minutes, I hated that phone) and the themes available after I rooted were so cool. I remember one that turned all my screen icons into translucent bubbles, so they didn't block the wallpaper. I loved that one.

But I really can't thank you guys enough. Without this forum and helpful people, I would still be in the dark with no tether. So thanks so much!

Themes are limited?:confused::confused:

Which version of MikG are you on? There are like 15 or so available for the current version. I've been running Mik Roms since Mikfroyo 4.4 and there has never been this many themes for his roms. I don't any other roms but I would be surprised if you saw more themes for one rom like you see for MikG. With that being said, I don't get outside themikmik.com much so there very well may be.

Are you sure you are looking in the right spot? What version you got?

welcome to the forms!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it could be a bad download of the file. do you plan on flashing a custom rom? if so you can just skip that part of the guide. all custom roms will have su cooked in.

i would first recommend that you skip that part and jump to the switching of recoveries and switch your recovery to amon ra. once you do that then you can read up on how to flash a rom in the guide.

i would recommend that you flash mikg3.0. it is way better then stock and so much more faster.MikG v3.0 [12/17/2011]

Thanks for your help and fast reply.

I have an EVO 4G.

It has firmware version 2.1 update1, baseband version 2.05.00.06.10; kernal version 2.6.29-789bf291; htc-kernal@and18-2 #1; build 1.47.651.1 CL195459 release-keys; software 1.47.651.1

I would like to root this suing the Revolutionary method but I went to this Revolutionary information page:

public:revolutionary [RootWiki]

It says Revolutionary is for EVO 4G's with HBoot versions 2.15.0001, 2.16.0001

My HBoot version is 0.79.0000

Does this get updated when I install SuperUser?

If not how do I update HBoot to a version that will work with Revolutionary?

Can I use the Revolutionary rooting method with my EVO?

oh wow i have not seen that hboot in a long time. lucky you that you have the eng bootloadet. anyways you will need to use unrevoked to get you rooted. here is the guide you will need:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies.html please read it fully before attempting to root and please feel free to ask questions.

Ha Ha. I have been holding off any updates so I would be able to root once I finally understood the process and all the jargon related to it. I just rooted my Thunderbolt using Revolutionary so I thought I would give my EVO a try now that I have at least a(n extremely) little understanding of the process.

My other excuse was that I was also holding off in the hope that Cyanogen would get 4G and HDMI GUI out working, but after years (or at least months) I gave up even following to see if they had.

well cm7 now has 4g and you can flash the tiamat kernel that has hdmi out working. now go and get your root on:D

Okay, just tried to copy the su file to the root of my sd card over my usb cable. The transfer takes place but when I look at my SD card there is nothing on it. I would assume that I should be able to see a file listed when I look at my card contents with the phone, all it says is "No Applications". Any suggestions??? Thanks.

are you placing the file on the card and not in a folder? what are you using to view the content on your phone? what file manager? if windows moved it, it should be there. go into recovery and search for the file there.

When I drag and drop the su file from C: downloads to G:(my phone) it reads "copy to root of storage" so I assumed that was the correct location and dropped it there. When I check my SD card I use Settings>Applications>Storage Use>On SD Card.

I did reformat my SD card prior to this and am showing usage of 484 KB, but nothing listed, and I did have my phone set to disk drive.

Removed my SD card from the phone and put in my computer and the SU file is there along with (4) file folders: android secure, android, footprints, and lost.dir. I would assume I am good to go but will definitely wait for confirmation.

yeah you will not see the file that way. you can use a file manager and you should be able to see it. when you got into settings that is for apps that you see and not files. so you should be good to go.

ok your browser might be blocking the popup window for the download. you can try using another browser. if you can't you can give me a sec and i will put it a dropbox link for you. or you can flash a rom. if you go to that route i would suggest that you flash MikG v3.0 [12/17/2011]. it is a super sweet rom and it will su cooked into it.

but if you go that route then i would suggest that you switch recoveries to amon ra and that you follow the flashing section as well.

heeeyyy! I got it!
step 1. done, "s-off" success....

i guess i am now rooted!!???

now onto the "fun" part...

how do i decide what to flash to my phone?
rom?
kernels?
how do i delete bloatware?-i saw the list of "safe to delete" but where do i find out "HOW TO"?
(i saw the new policy on tethering so we wont mention that...)

thanks for bearing with me...

btw..i did the entire Revolutionary thing on my Mac, using VMFusionWare as a PC VirtualMachine, using an old copy of Widows XP....i got the su zip over to that "machine" by downloading on my mac-then emailing the file to myself, then putting on the "PC" desktop...i got hung up only because 1. i forgot to run the htc driver .exe (duh!) and 2. I couldnt read my revolutionary key ( lower case l vs the number 1), solved that by a cut and paste and then changed the font so i could see it properly...

so about the above questions....???

I am seriously struggling to run revolutionary on ubuntu maveric. I tried opening it through terminal using gksu but nothing happens at all. it seems after hours of internet research that no one shares my same ignorance for running executable files.

I figured out how to run revolutionary and it recognizes my device but before I have a chance to enter my beta key it says "invalid beta key aborting..." Anyone have a similar problem/solution?

you will have to make that choice. roms are a matter of opinion. i would stay away from ics until those roms are a bit more stable. they are getting close though.

but do you want something different that does not have htc sense in the rom? if yes the aosp roms are the way to go. i would try cm7, deck's, and the xplod rom.

if you want to stick with sense based roms then i would start out with mikg3.0

you can get all of them here:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/284413-roms-kernels-download-page.html

common issue. have you tried notepad++ that is the only one that worked for me. i copied the beta key that was generated on the revolutionary website and pasted it into notepad++ then i copied the key again in notepad++ and then right clicked the top left corner of the command window and pasted the key in. this worked for me. however. it did take like 20 tries of doing the same exact thing before it worked.

Ok, so here is the process in which I am taking using ubuntu maveric:

open terminal, run command "gksu nautilus" search filesystem for revolutionary, Run revolutionary and it opens in the same terminal...

Like i said before it says invalid beta key before i have a chance to enter one then I copy paste the beta key "which i copied from the revolutionary site into xpad" and when paste it in terminal it just sits there and does nothing...

sorry i'm not a mac person so not sure exactly what the issues is. hopefully someone here who has a mac can help out with that situation.

Trying my first root on my EVO 4G, but when I run the revolutionary tool, nothing happens. The cmd prompt pops up for a split second then disappears. Any ideas? Thanks!

Ok after tons of reading and much anticipation, I'm finally rooted! :D Thanks ocnbrze for this dummy guide. It really was simple and easy. Revolutionary, amon ra 2.3, Mikg 3.0, but no kernels yet. I'm ready to explore root.

Lets start with some basic info. What is your hboot or software version number? Do you have the driver's installed? Is your phone booted, plugged into the pc, usb debugging on and set to charge only? Make sure any antivirus or scanning software is disabled also.
