Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

Ok i did that one the ruu supersonic link is not working right that is the one i was trying to use but apparently i had already done what i needed to
thank You

I cannot change CWM to Amon Ra, it says:

--installing: /sdcard/Amon/PC36IMG.zip
finding update package....
opening update package...
installing update....
installation aborted.

I'm rooted, don't have wifi access or service on the phone, can't get Evo to install apps from sd, won't flash Amon Ra. Almost done, just need Amon Ra and MikG v3.1 flashed. Is there any way I'll be able to download apps without service to this phone?

it could be a bad download. try re-downloading the file and try again.

You don't flash a PC36IMG.zip file in recovery - you do it using the Bootloader (HBOOT). First, you have to put the file on the root of the SD card (not in the "Amon" folder you currently have it in). Then, when you boot into the bootloader, the file should be detected.

While I appreciate all help from members here, I am still having trouble getting this done. I have learned so much in the month or two that I was a "lurker", but I am now a poster. :D In my post that was quoted, I was relaying what was stated on my hboot screen. Bootloader does not recognize the file. Therefore it will not flash the recovery mod. In your reply you stated that I need to put the file on the root of my sd card. I am not sureif I am to leave it as a zip and just rename it with my comp. or if I need to extract the zip and just put the recovery img file on the root. I am trying to get this done asap, so any help would be appreciated.

BTW, Thank you to Capt. Throwback and OcnBrz, I now have a fully rooted Huawei M835, AND a rooted Evo 4G.

Now ....... Let's "GET MY FLASH ON"!!!!!!

The file needs to stay zipped. Also, the lines of information you reported would not appear in HBOOT (a.k.a. Bootloader) - they would only appear in Recovery.

I was under the assumption that the bootloader screen is the first to load. Meaning, the screen that gives me the option to reboot, or go to the recovery screen. When I boot into recovery mode, is the first screen I come to the hboot screen? if it is, than that is where I was told installation aborted. I am trying to rename the pc36img file, but it doesn't show any file extension. I know I don't have the folder set to show extensions, but I am fairly new to Windows 7, I am more familiar with XP. Any more help is greatly appreciated.

no the very first screen after the power+vol down is called the bootloader. it is programmed to search for a specific file name, PC36IMG. so if the file is named correctly (make sure not to have an extra zip) and it is on the root of the sd card. the bootloader should find it.

And it needs to be PC36IMG not pc36img.

Just renamed it, going to try now. Should I worry about losing my apps data? I am also worried that I might mess stuff up, I am clearly not as learned as most of you guys are. This will be my first attempt at flashing. If it is successful, I want to try flashing MikGv.3 on my Evo. I want something new for my Huawei M835 as well but I am aware that I want a Sense based rom not AOSP. I am SOOO not up to par to figure that stuff out.

no you will not loose data. you are only installing a recovery so you will not need to wipe anything.

and that is why we are here. we can help you steer yourself in the right direction.

let us know how that goes.

Bootloader said, no image or wrong image. Should I leave a period on the end or not. I did not, but it still didn't work. Going to try and redownload the file again. Fingers crossed.::::mad:

This is usually caused by improperly naming the file or not having it on the root of the SD card. If it is named and placed right the bootloader will find and scan it regaurdless of what the file contains.

If you're using windows file explorer, and there is no extension showing, but it has the icon of a zip archive or says that it's a zip file in the description, then there should be no period at the end - it should just be named PC36IMG. If the file has no icon and no description, then you likely need to add a .zip to the name. It may be easier to just have you download one that's already properly named, that way you don't have to worry about the renaming part (it can get a little tricky).

EDIT: It was named correctly when you initially tried to flash it in recovery, so as long as you haven't changed it since then, that shouldn't be your problem. Could be a bad download.

I downloaded it from the EVO revolution rooting guide. Tried last night after the redownload and still no good. Could someone post a verified link? I imagine it might still be the file, but 4 bad ones? Makes me wonder what I'm doing wrong.

Edit: I was wondering, maybe it is because I am downloading it and renaming it on my EVO? I haven't tried dloading on my comp and then transfer it renamed.

I dloaded the new link, renamed it (PC36IMG.zip), rebooted, same. No image or wrong image. I moved it from download folder to: /mnt/SD/PC36IMG.zip
What exactly am I doing wrong? When it boots, it sits idle until I try to scroll down. As soon as I push the volume down button, that's when it tries to detect. Also, I have MikGv.3, the Rom that you recommended, want to flash that today as well. I bought ROM Toolbox Pro, tried to flash new boot animation, but it did not work. Still see ugly Sprint logo.

It could also be the SD card. I once had to reformat a card (my wife's phone) because it wouldn't recognize a PC36IMG file in bootloader. Do you have another card you can try?

No I don't, but if I backup with Tb pro, can I upload that backup to dropbox, reformat the SD, and finally restore my apps and data from said backup? I have already used CwM to create a nandroid backup and have it in my dropbox. Would that be better. I am really unconcerned about my game saves, but I have paid apps I do not wish to lose. I just bought ROM toolbox premium, would that work for MikG? It only gave me the option to flash some built in time, like Cm7. I don't want Cm7, I really want MikG, for which I already have the zip file.

You can backup the entire SD card to a folder on your computer, reformat it, and then copy everything back. Then you don't lose anything ;).

Before copying everything back, though, I would first try putting just the PC36IMG.zip file on the card, and seeing if the Bootloader recognizes it.

Reformatting your SD card will not affect any of your paid apps. In fact, switching devices won't even affect that, as your purchases are linked to your Gmail account, and go with you onto whatever device you sign in to.

You guys are seriously butt poop awesome. I will keep everyone up to date. Thank you for all your help, I am so much closer to understanding this. Not completely, but infinitely better.

I feel like i am missing something that is painfully obvious, i just do not know how to do it. I have an htc evo 4g 2.3.3., it has s-off, and clockwork now installed...so the rooting portion is complete, i just can't seem to figure out how to correctly go from downloading the superuser file from my computer, extracting it on to my sd card and then locating it from there............any help would be greatly appreciated.........thanks
