Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

I feel like i am missing something that is painfully obvious, i just do not know how to do it. I have an htc evo 4g 2.3.3., it has s-off, and clockwork now installed...so the rooting portion is complete, i just can't seem to figure out how to correctly go from downloading the superuser file from my computer, extracting it on to my sd card and then locating it from there............any help would be greatly appreciated.........thanks

Do not extract it just move it to the SD card and go to recovery and flash it from there. I'm not familer with cm but it should be something like flash SIP from sd

ummmm that should be "zip" not SIP;)

and mikey here is correct. never extract any files unless you are told to do so. anything that gets flashed in recovery needs to be zipped in for the recovery to flash it.

also i would read this guide and switch recovery to amon ra2.3 it is waaaay better then cwm.

also you can just flash a custom rom like mikg3.11 which is way better then stock anyways. but that is up to you.

Opps:eek: Typo

alright guys just made some changes to the unrooting process. i made it so that flashing the radio is not in the initial process. but only if you are having problems with unrooting.

Funny you should bring this up, I just spent all day yesterday unrooting my father in law so he could take his phone in to get looked at. Now keep in mind I did this over the phone and through teamviewer so I couldn't see everything he was seeing. It took me forever to get the radios to flash, but I'm not sure if when we first did it he didn't do something right on his end or not.

It just kept taking him back to the flash something from zip screen, but I think it might have been telling him to reboot the phone to complete the process and he wasn't seeing it. So I ended up trying to flash the hboot without downgrading radios (he was two updates ahead-05.02 I think) and it didn't work until I got the radios flashed.

I ended up re-flashing his recovery and flashing the radios and all was great after that. Now, like I said, I'm not sure it was necessary to re-flash the recovery because he may have not been noticing the "reboot to finish installation" message at the bottom.

So moral of the story for anyone doing it, when you flash the radios it should tell you to reboot to finish the process, so keep an eye out for that. My father in law isn't tech savvy at all, so he might not have seen it, I'm not sure.

Anyway thanks again for the great guide OCN, keep it up. :D

First time posting, apologies if I screw up the terminology. I'm trying to unroot my phone back to gingerbread (stock evo 4g software). When I try to flash the second PC36IMG (i have it named exactly that), it comes up with
--Installing: /sdcard/PC36IMG.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
Installation aborted.

That is when I go through recovery mode, go to install zip from sd card, and then choose that one. When booting through hboot, it does not ask me if I want to update. Ideas?

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ok first off you can'y flash the PC36IMG file thru recovery. it needs to be flashed via the bootloader.

and to make sure you are using the correct method, can you please provide the info that the captain has asked for. the hboot version can be found in the bootloader screen.

Thanks! I really hope I get the help I need, because I'm feeling pretty helpless at this point..
hboot version is 6.17.0001, I should also note that when in the bootloader it does seem to recognize the PC36IMG.zip, but does not ask if I want to update.
Also, because I can't remember if I mentioned this, I am trying to get my phone back to out of the box settings. The main reason being that my phone is not getting service and Sprint (of course) says that they do not know how to fix it since it's been rooted. Not sure if that was worth putting down, but again, pretty new at this, better too much info than not enough =]

My phone isn't getting service. It is able to get on WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS believe it or not (put in the address on wifi, it took me all the way there without a hitch), but not 3G or regular phone calls, same with texts. Sprint says it's been added to my account, whether or not that means it's activated on their end I don't know, but I assume not.
I'll give you more to the story. Broke my phone, blah blah blah, bought a new one of CL already rooted.

Called Sprint to activate it, they tie the new phone to my line and tell me to put ##786# into the phone app to get an activation screen, which doesn't come up. After a few different numbers and no success, they tell me to bring it in to the store near my house, where they factory reset my phone again with no success, and tell me to bring it back to them when it's unrooted so they can help me further.

That's kind of where I'm at right now. Again, it's s-on, but I can't get it to flash the Gingerbread (?) or stock rom or whatever you call it to get it back to the way it would look out of the box.

If there's any other information you need let me know, I'm really hoping I can fix this today, so I'll be online for most of the day.

Hello there!

What ROM are you on? If you are still on the stock ROM it doesn't have the hacked hotspot.

You can either flash a custom ROM with the hacked hotspot such as mikG3.11 (recommended)

Or get the hacked hotspot for your ROM

i had the hboot issue, searched and searched how to downgrade it for days and almost gave up, but finally i after changing the search terms i came upon this and it saved my phone!!!!! thanks so very much for this guide. and yes i hit the thanks button!

Just wanted to say thanks for including the unrooting tutorial! I have to send my phone back to sprint to waive our early termination fees and I'm in the process of unrooting it now, already got S-on back.
