Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

Yes, we just don't get service with Sprint at all in our neighborhood (just moved here about a year ago) and I'm tired of it now, lol. Moved on to AT&T...

Noob to rooting here- finally ready to do it- but with a little research I now realize it may not be possible as my HTC EVO 4G has Android version 2.3.5, kernel version 2.6.35.10, build number 4.67.651.3 ....the update at the beginning of this thread said the 'revolutionary' method won't work with these versions (as of course up until now I have been accepting OTA updates)- just looking for a quick answer or links to any other options that are being worked on or are even available now to get my phone rooted as it stands.. thanks in advance for any feedback

like rxpert says, you will need to get into the bootloader so power off the phone then press and hold power+vol down. this will take you to the bootloader screen.

make sure that you name the file correctly. it needs to be exactly PC36IMG. keep in mind that windows by default hides extensions. so do not add an extra .zip to the name. otherwise, the file will be named PC36IMG.zip.zip which will not work.

also the file needs to be on the root of the sd card which means not in any folder. place the file just on the card.

just out of curiosity why do you want to unroot?

Alright ive Done everything like you said and in the bootloader it takes a few seconds and says checking PC36IMG but it never asks to do an update

i want to unroot because I bought the phone used and it was already rooted i don't know anything about rooting so i think it will really go to waste

Are you sure it was named correctly? PC36IMG.zip. Windows may hide the file extensions (thats a rant for another day) so make you dont have a .zip.zip

Also, I would actually suggest against unrooting. You can just flash the stock ROM on there without unrooting and that leaves you with root access if you ever decide you want to try it. With each new OTA it gets harder and harder to root the phone, so I would leave it on there in case you ever get curious.

i have to agree with rxpert about keeping it rooted, but you already have s-on now. you can technically keep it like that with a custom recovery and flash a stock rom if you like. but that is up to you.

if you want to finish the unrooting process then you can try using this ruu:
RUU_SuperSonic_GB_Sprint_WWE_4.54.651.1

just download it on your computer and run the program. connect the phone when it prompts you to and it will do the rest.

Hi all. Been reading and using everyone's advise for quite awhile now, but it's my turn for needing some help.

Tried unrooting my phone yesterday and I've got the same situation some of the others have in that I have s-on and a newer radio.
already flashed hboot 6.17 zip, then tried the 4.54.651...but I'm stuck here. hboot still shows 6.17.0001, s-on, radio 2.15.00.12.19.

Flashing a newer ruu fails. Images are named correctly. Being flashed in bootloader, etc.

Not sure what to do at this point. Still have su because I can go from stock to rooted roms and back. Thanks.

what happens in the bootloader? does it not see it? are you placing the file on the sd card and not in any folder on the card?

ok looks like you have the latest radio, but you were trying to install an older ruu with the 4.54 ruu which will not work. try this one:PC36IMG_SuperSonic_GB_Sprint_WWE_4.67.651.3

Ive followed the above steps and downloaded the files for the unrooting of the HTC evo 4g, when i try to rename the RUU to the PC36IMG.zip and place it in the root and run i get

SD Checking....
Loading...[PC36DIAG.zip]
No Image!
Loading...[PC36DIAG.nbh]
No image or wrong image
Loading...[PC36IMG.zip]

S-On
Hboot-6.17.0001
Radio-2.15.00.05.02

Please help, Thanks again.

make sure that:
1.you are not adding an extra .zip to the name as windows hides extensions.

and

2.you are putting the file on the root of the card, no folders, just on the card.

also what size card are you using?

Is it to late to get back to s-off now that i have turned it on but have not made it through the final stages of stock form?

you can just re-run revolutionary if you want s-off again.

what ruu are you using?

why are you unrooting?
Can't re-run Revolutionary at this point. The hex-edited PC36IMG.zip file will fool Revolutionary into thinking the device is already rooted (due to the number), so that won't work.

At this point, unrooting must continue, unfortunately. The 4.54 PC36IMG should work. If not that, then the RUU should work (it almost always works if the device is put into fastboot first).

I am trying to root my Evo 4g 2.3.3 and I made it through the entire process, until you unzip the superuser.pk. I get the superuser.pk on the phone, then get into revolutionary mode, but when I try to unzip the superuser.pk it says "no data." Any help would be much appreciated.

no need to unzip files unless told to do so. the su file is flashed thru recovery, but it needs to be as is.

Thanks ocnbrze!
I followed a you tube video (How to Root the HTC Evo 4G in 5 minutes! Part 2/2 (Gingerbread Edition) - YouTube) to try to root the phone, but it didn't work... which is why I am here.

Can you recommend a easy rooting option for the EVO 4g with gingerbread 2.3.3, the less steps the better.

Can you pull the battery out of the phone, put it back in, and hold power+volume down for me? This will bring you to the H-boot page. Can you tell me what your h-boot is? SHould be something like 2.16 or 2.18

well like rxpert is suggesting, the root method will be determined by what your hboot version is. if you have 2.16 then the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html will be for you.

if you have are up to date on your ota's (which you should never do, especially if you want to root the phone) and you hboot is 2,18 then u will need to use this guide: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html.

if you are not rooted (s-on, still) i'm not sure why you were trying to use the su file. you can only use that if you have s-off or have unlocked your bootloader. before trying anything else please read the appropriate guide to what your hboot version is. also you have us, AF, to help answer any questions that you have. trying to do something to your phone without understanding what you are doing, runs you with potentially bricking your phone.

so again please feel free to ask as much questions that you have. and the more details you can provide us with the better we can help you.

Thanks for the help guys. So I looked up the hboot, its 6.16.1002 and under settings on the phone it says Android version 2.3.3. Is that enough info to recommend a rooting type, or do you need more?

Thanks again!
